Oh, man, a top 5 list is tough, but I'll give it a try.

1. Bioshock Infinite

2. Red Dead Redemption

3. Dragon's Dogma

4. Fallout 3

5. Black Ops

6. Valkyrie Cronicles

7. Oblivion

8. Demon Souls

9. Bioshock

10. Dragon's Age

I went with a top 10 just because I felt I couldn't leave a few games off of my list.

So because GTA 5 seems to be a swan song for the current generation of consoles, I thought maybe it's time for some top 3/5/whatever lists of this generation. Here's mine (I didn't play the Xbox that much)

1. Last of Us - also the best looking console game of this generation (in my opinion)

2. Super Mario Galaxy 2 - even though I'm a grown man I fucking loved this game

3. Red Dead Redemption

4. Bioshock 1

5. Call of Duty 4 :D

Edit: 6. Can't believe I forgot Uncharted 2

Not in any order:

Red Dead Redemption

Battlefield: Bad Company

Borderlands 2

Dark Souls

Fallout: New Vegas

Too early to judge GTA V but early indications are that it would make the list.

If 'of the last generation' means since the end of 2005, here's my Top 15:

Alan Wake

Bioshock Infinite

Company of Heroes

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Dishonored

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Fallout: New Vegas

Medieval II: Total War

Metro: Last Light

Portal

Portal 2

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm

Tomb Raider (2013)

The Walking Dead

XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Bubbling under: Just Cause 2, Fallout 3, the STALKER series, The Witcher, Total War: Shogun II, Shadowrun Returns, Tropico 4, Spec Ops: The Line, Mirror's Edge, FTL, Grand Theft Auto IV (with the expansions), Batman: Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, Crysis, Far Cry 3, Mass Effect 2, most of Mass Effect 3, Jade Empire, Dragon Age: Awakening, Commander and Conquer 3, Dawn of War II, Metro 2033.

Too early to tell: Total War: Rome II

Not played yet: Dark Souls, Civilization V, Alpha Protocol, The Witcher 2, Dead Space, Bulletstorm, The Bureau: XCOM Declassifed.

Have played but not good enough to make the list: Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age II, Oblivion, StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, Bioshock, any CoD, Red Alert 3, Crysis 2, Commander and Conquer 4.

From Xbox only?

1. Halo 3 - nostalgia and still much better than the newer ones

2. Skyrim - first rpg I really played

3. Portal and portal 2 - this was a triumph

4. Minecraft - love the convenience of it on the Xbox

5. Battlefield 3 Read Dead Redemption - haven't finished it yet

PC included, Rome and Medieval 2 fit in there somewhere.

Not in any order, my top 5 would be:

Bioshock Infinite, Dishonored, Fallout: New Vegas , Mass Effect 2, Portal 2

And my honorable mentions, again not in any order, would be:

Borderlands 2, Mass Effect 3, Saints Row 3, Tomb Raider (2013), XCOM: Enemy Unknown

And the games that I really wanted to include on the list, but just couldn't because they aren't as good (but are still really good):

Dues Ex: Human Revolution, Fallout 3, Red Dead Redemption, Skyrim, Saints Row 4

So I guess that works out to 3 tiers of a Top 15 list.

Other games that I'm really glad I played include:

Assassin's Creed II, Crysis 2, Diablo 3, Dragon Age Origins, Dragon Age II, Europa Univeralis III, Far Cry 3, Saints Row 2. Tropico 4

Games that were alright:

Assassins Creed Brotherhood, Bioshock, Borderlands, Bulletstorm, Civilization V, Crackdown, Dynasty Warriors 7, Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3, Halo 3, LA Noire, GTA IV, Magic 2014, Mass Effect 1, MLB2k11 & Madden 2010

Games that weren't that good but that I still beat:

Assassins Creed Revelations, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Dante's Inferno, The Saboteur

Games that weren't horrible but that I just got too bored with to ever beat (some of which started off really strongly):

Darkstar One, Dragon's Dogma, Divinity II, Final Fantasy XIII, Kingdoms of Amalaur, Max Payne 3, Overlord 2, Prey, Tales of Vesperia, The Witcher 2

Games that I stopped playing because I actively disliked them:

Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dark Souls, Halo Wars, Nier

Games that I got stuck in:

Battlefield 2, Bayonetta, Devil May Cry, Rayman Origins, Red Faction: Guerrilla, Space Marine

Games that glitched out on me:

Darksiders, Dark Void, Fable II, Stronghold

ETA: A few games I forgot, also formatting

Looks like most posters here rank Infinite way above the original BioShock...was the first BioShock not that great? I remember it being amazing (especially the story), but it could just be nostalgia because that was my first Xbox 360 game.

cause its a superior sequel dude. Same reason why ME2 is above ME1

Looks like most posters here rank Infinite way above the original BioShock...was the first BioShock not that great? I remember it being amazing (especially the story), but it could just be nostalgia because that was my first Xbox 360 game.

I have three main issues with BioShock: the first is on me, which is that I was spoiled about everything before I played it, which lessened the story's impact. The other two are that the combat was not very fun and that there was something very off about the lighting. It is one of the only games I've ever played that I couldn't keep going for more than 20-30 minutes without getting a blazing headache.

By contrast, Infinite was completely unspoiled for me (I also think it had a better story, and I really liked the constant interaction between Booker and Elizabeth), had a mundane but competent combat system (the controls are roughly the same as in Bioshock, but everything feels smoother and more polished), and didn't have that lighting issue (which I've really never encountered before, and I've played games with very low lighting).
