Yeah, it appears to be a police raid connected to the attack:

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-34853657

Armed police are raiding a flat in the north Paris suburb of Saint Denis in an operation linked to Friday's attacks.

Three suspects have reportedly been killed, including a woman who blew herself up with a suicide belt. Seven explosions and gunfire were heard.

Two have been arrested. Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the alleged mastermind, is said to be the focus of the operation.

The so-called Islamic State (IS) group has said it carried out the attacks in which 129 people died.

So definitely two people dead, though I've heard reports of three. one of them a female suicide bomber who blew herself up as the cops closed in. Unclear if the other mortality was a cop or a terrorist.

Explosions and heavy gunfire were heard in Paris as armed police searching for suspects from Friday's attacks raided a flat in the suburb of Saint Denis.

Two people were killed in the raid, including a female suspect blew herself up with a suicide belt. Seven people have been arrested, police say.

A government spokesman has confirmed the operation has ended.

The focus of the raid is said to be the alleged mastermind of Friday's attacks that killed 129 people.

Abdelhamid Abaaoud, a 27-year-old Belgian of Moroccan origin, was originally suspected of organising Friday's attacks from Syria.

One of the suspects killed today by the police is Abdelhamid Abaaoud in Saint Denis, the person who planned the attack in Paris. They confirmed it apparently to the Belgian media. However I think it is not officially told by French authorities

This is unconfirmed, the BBC just now is reporting the Paris prosecutor as saying he's not one of the people they arrested but they haven't yet identified the dead people.

Like I said it is not told officially by the French authorities.

They are basing it on two independent (Belgian!) sources, so you should indeed be wary about it. And was he certainly the man behind everything? Who knows?

So, that police raid in St. Dennis lasted for an hour.  The police knew the suspects were armed, but these guys had quite the arsenal. being able to hold off the police for so long.  Police said they shot 5,000 rounds of ammunition.  And the action was taken because security services believed another attack was about to take place in the next few days.

The French prosecutor revealed that the attackers rented three cars in Belgium and drove to Paris. Perhaps the security failure was not so much the failure of the French, but the failure of Belgium authorities.

And, finally, the Daesh have published a story showing what they claim is a picture of the bomb that took down the Russian charter jet.  It was in a can of Schweppes gold.  Authorities suspect it was on a timer. and could have come in with the catering supplies.

Can anyone deny that? However the Belgian authorities were not happy with the fact that Hollande said something like the attacks were organized from Belgium (which is in fact the truth but Belgian politicians love to deny the real truth.

I think the Belgian Security Service did make a fault in underestimating the possible danger in the information they have. But it is not like they got a lot of financial means. However there is already an Belgian investigation which will investigate why the planning was not found out by the Belgian Security Service.

I actually read somewhere our Belgian constitution is to blame; something about our state structure and Brussels.

Today was there a speech from the Belgian PM in the parliament about which new measures they are going to take against the fight of terrorism.

I think this Washington Post article summarizes all the latest developments. The highlights:

Seeking to fortify itself amid a “war” on terror, French lawmakers voted Thursday to extend state-of-emergency measures even as the prime minister warned that security forces must now prepare for risks that included chemical or biological attacks.

After approval in the National Assembly, it now moves to the Senate for expected final backing Friday.

Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni said Thursday that Italian security forces were “working to identify five people” who may be planning possible attacks on the St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, Milan’s Duomo cathedral or the La Scala Opera house.

The U.S. State Department issued a travel warning to American citizens traveling in Italy, calling those landmarks “potential targets,” but also flagging potential threats to “churches, synagogues, restaurants, theatres, and hotels” in both Rome and Milan.

Gentiloni told the Italian state television RAI that the FBI provided them with information about the five possible suspects.

Belgian police conducted at least six anti-terrorism raids in Brussels on Thursday, reports said.

The European Union planned an extraordinary meeting Friday for ministers of justice and home affairs. Officials said they expect the meeting to focus on how to stem the traffic in firearms, much of it coming from the western Balkans, and on setting common standards for de-activating old guns.

They will also discuss ways to make it possible for border police to check passports against a police data base. Another issue for the Europen Union is whether to allow security services to have access to passenger lists, as they do in the United States.

In Germany, where a concrete threat of a terror attack forced the cancellation of a soccer game Tuesday, politicians are airing plans to deploy the army to aid the police and protect possible terror targets, including train stations and stadiums.

I just heard this morning that New York City has upped their alert level after the Daesh released a video overnight, showing scenes of famous New York landmarks interspersed with pictures of people strapping on suicide vests..

Be careful and alert, New Yorkers...  :(

ETA:  This link has some scenes from the video, showing bombs, explosions, NYC, Paris.  http://pix11.com/2015/11/18/isis-new-york-video-terror-group-releases-warning-of-times-square-attack/

There is panic in brussels: they believe there is an imminent threat of an attack. So today they ordered to close the shops, the cafes were closed at 18.00 o'clock, people got the advice to avoid public places, ...

(x)

The universities also cancelled the classes and activities of today and tomorrow. And this decision might be extended if the threat is still imminent.

And Belgian media says there are really not a lot of people on the street in Brussels.

The hacker collective Anonymous has released a statement saying they hacked into secret Daesh computer files and found that tomorrow is supposed to be a worldwide Day of Terror, with attacks planned in the USA, Europe, Indonesia, Italy, Lebanon, and, of course, France.  They even name events, among them a WWE wrestling event in Atlanta, Georgia and churches in Rome, including the Vatican, celebrating the feast day of Christ the King.  Churches around the world, apparently.

Secret Daesh computer files? Where they list all their targets? Sorry, I just don't buy this at all.

The Daesh are well known to be masters of social media and excellent and up-to-date users of technology.  Anonymous have said they have shut down 20,000 twitter accounts they've been using so far, and even though the response of the Daesh has been they'll simply open encrypted accounts, it seems to me that a group that can hack government, corporate and police accounts can hack into Daesh's computerized records.

The claims of attacks, of course, could simply be fear mongering, but it sure seems to have gotten to Belgium security.

ETA:  There was the incident of the publication of the KKK list, which list Anonymous said they did not publish.  Now there appears to be a tweet from Anonymous denying the attack information.  http://www.ibtimes.com/anonymous-says-isis-plans-attacks-against-paris-world-sunday-2194926

<shrugs>

You can't really know for sure who has done what - western security forces trying to ramp up fear?  Daesh or Daesh supporters trying to ramp up fear?  Anonymous playing a cagy game?  Whatever is going on, some threats are being taken very seriously.  There were reports of increased security provided by the Italian government around the Vatican in response to apparent threats, so, again, some threats are being taken very seriously.

There's nothing our leaders like more than the populace cowering in fear. So I wouldn't put anything past these bastards. In fact, I wouldn't be at all surprised if, at some point in the future, at least one of these high profile terrorist atrocities is revealed to be a false flag operation, perpetrated by so-called friendly security services.

FB,

As "masters" of social media the Daesh could simply be peppering their files with false information to figure out where their holes are so that they can be plugged when they see the West reacting to disinformation.

I respect what Anonymous is trying to do but it may end up helping the Daesh.

Spocky,

That's an awefully cynical position.  Do you have any data that points to major terror attacks actually being "false flag" operations?
