Kalbear
Just now, Tywin et al. said: It's the “Take the guns first, go through due process second." that's going to drive them nuts. It also shows the NRA that Trump's full of it when he says there isn't a stronger supporter of the NRA than him. No, it isn't. They should be based on what they talk about and say, and even a few of them might do that - but LaPierre? Fuck no, he won't. He won't fucking care a bit. He'll just say that we want to be tough on criminals and sane, upstanding Christians, and if you're one of them you'll be just fine. Now, the other possibility is that the gun manufacturers - which got utterly killed thanks to Trump being elected when they bet on Clinton and ramped up production, only to see themselves eat all that - would LOVE Trump to threaten this, since every time there's even an inkling of banning anything gun sales go up. lokisnow
I’m fascinated. i mean I know democrats are too stupid to play that line 3 billion times between now and November 2020, dems should make sure not one day goes by without airing a commercial with trump saying that line in it, but hey are too stupid and inept to use these sorts of weapons when they appear. but if dems are not their usual sort of “strive to lose by not trying to win” morons they always are, if they defy all expectations and actually do weaponize this quote against trump and republicans what then? That’s what has me fascinated. because for most republicans, guns=identity. And trump, for the first time, has come into conflict with that. so if trump supporters have to choose between a profound sense of identity and their support for trump, which one loses? immovable object meets unstoppable force? This is like a marvel movie. this might be the only possible thing that can move the needle on trump, his assault on theirnidentity by invoking their deepest and most profound fears. reality tv, the best tv? Who saw this twist coming?, what if he marries Kanye next?

I'm just started reading a recap of the meeting, and good god, saying it went of the rails quickly is an understatement: https://www.politico.com/story/2018/02/28/trump-guns-nra-gop-pat-toomey-430782 Looks like the jokes on the gun lovers who supported Trump because he would unilaterally protect their second amendment rights. I think it's worth noting that before Trump and his personal political reversal, he was a strong supporter of gun control. see, what the deal is, they would only take away the guns from those who publicly oppose them and from the scary people of color. Can't let them have guns, just the Right kind of people.

Trump will back down, Sanders will say he didn't mean it and in a few days, everyone will forget he said it. We've seen this movie before. Yup. Since there's this psychology of Trump discussion going on, it's very clear in bipartisan meetings he says what people want to hear. Then he gets reined in, and nothing comes of it. If anything, he comes out the other side further to the right.

This is yet another example of what I told @TrackerNeil a while back about the moral theory and how it works - and how you see it in all sorts of weird places. In general conservatives have a higher overall range of emotions than liberals, and in particular they will have more fear, more joy, and more disgust. Liberals tend to have higher amounts of anger and sadness (corresponding to fairness and care/harm) and care less about ingroup (joy), purity (disgust) and authority (fear). You see this in experiment after experiment about US moral values, though this is a cultural thing and not a universal human set of values across conservative/liberal scales (though the emotions and moral values are, their weighings are not). lokisnow
For the record trumps enthusiastic endorsement of discarding due process is one of the most terrifying things he’s ever said and any liberal that cheers that approach to gun control is a moron. Trumps statement is a weapon to be used against him, not a fucking goal for the gun control movement to latch on to!

That and how there really has not been a mass collective freak out like there would of been if Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama said that. Oh I know some but every Republican would of had a fundraising Email out in blast within 30 minutes along with the NRA who website would have that in 6 inch red letters

But it's hard not to believe that tonight or tomorrow or next week he'll have forgotten all about standing up toughly and bigly to the NRA and be their best friend again forever. In the meantime Florida legislature wants to or has put a bill into play to stop school shooting by mandating teachers buy their own guns at their own expense. Ours is a crazier pants country even than North Korea or Idi Amin's Uganda.

Teng Ai Hui
Trump creates his political beliefs the same way James Joyce creates his books. Everything is just stream-of-consciousness with him. He has no other gear.

The Anti-Targ
Well, isn't this what populists do? They figure out what's popular and they run with it. Someone, somehow told Trump that actually the popular opinion is to get tougher on guns. Trump only has one ideology: What's good / in it for me? What's the NRA and right wingers going to do? Vote for a Democrat in 2020? End of the day Trump can't do shit because Congress (or State legislatures) have to pass the laws to implement further gun controls. As long as the NRA is bribing donating to enough Republicans there will be no law change. Is the NRA not going to donate money to keep a Republican President in office? Of course as soon as talk of primarying Trump for the Presidency gets started his base ideology (as mentioned) will kick in and self preservation will override all other considerations, whereupon he will fall back into line with NRA policy. Trump may be so badly crippled leading in to 2020 that he has no show of winning, and by some miracle the Democrats might actually nominate someone decent, but for Trump being the first primaried (and lost) sitting president in a long time would be unaccpetable.
