Weeping Sore
I mean that's just like eating fish, right? When you cut a hunk of sashimi-grade mermaid tail, all the mermaids say is: "Μην μου να φάει !" They can't be sentient if they don't speak English, am I right? I wouldn't dream of eating it myself. Those people can go to hell.

Theda Baratheon
I don't think it's ethical to eat fish so the argument "its just like eating fish" means nothing to me. Also, no.
Wise Fool
I blame the distributors, not the people who buy it. Same way with tobacco companies.
Weeping Sore
Some people say eating the tails is the only way they'll get off of their lazy fish asses and grow some legs so as to marry land princes. We're really doing them a favor, see?
Wise Fool
Also the mercury poisoning usually affects their tails first, so you're really helping them out.

Fez
Depends on when they diverged from us evolutionarily. If its in the past few million years, like the Great Apes, nope, that's a no go. But if they are descended from fish or dolphins are something and just happen to look a bit like us up top, sure, grab a bite.
The Killer Snark
I myself am against it as a means of encouraging them to rise from the ocean after losing their tails, in order to take care of all the single guys out there, because I've seen Ponyo: and I think the Lord of the Sea might get angry and wage war against us for taking all the lovely mermaids out the waters. Apart from that, when they were forced to morph into humans, surely the poor things would have no legs.
A True Kaniggit
Only if the tail is from a freerange mermaid. If it's from a tank bred mermaid then no.
The Killer Snark
If it's a tank bred mermaid, that's crueler. They might be positioned in aquariums in the middle of high end restaurants where they can see the someday approaching knives and forks.
Wise Fool
They're not intelligent enough to understand what knives and forks mean, though.

Wise Fool
The Bi-ble says thou shalt not harm a mermaid of the sea. Deuteronomy 14:9-10 (NIV): Of all the creatures living in the water, you may eat any that has fins and scales. But anything that does not have fins and scales you may not eat; for you it is unclean. So you can totally eat mermaids, as long as they're living in the water and therefore have their tails.

The Killer Snark
I vote no, because I personally like these friendly creatures. I've been out on boats a few times and occasionally you see a bunch of them looking coyly over at the boat, and giggling to each other: and then they come over and start flirting by running their hands through their hair, and they dare each other to do booby-flashes before swimming away when you try to set up a date. This is common mermaid behaviour on their occasional days and nights out because they like to get tipsy on fermented seaweed. They are lovely, gentle things which have never done any harm to anyone, and I say we should leave them alone. What's next? Hunting down beautiful female centaurs when we run out of venison? mcbigski
I vote no, for fear of collateral damage. You don't want to piss off Aquaman.
Durckad
Personally, I prefer my mermaids with the lady parts for the bottom and the fish parts for the top so this totally does not apply to me.
