Yes, the pace of the season, overall was very uneven. The 3 great episodes 5,9 & 10 should have had some of their sequences spread out and lengthened and some of the nonsense scenes like Tyrion's jokes should have been removed.

Yes, but for the majority of viewers, this recipe works miracles for the show.  They concentrate their efforts on the last two episodes, epic battles, a little more attention to detail....and voila.  75% of the audience forgets how dull most of the previous 8 episodes were, and the show goes out in a blaze of critical glory, and the numbers go up.  So, while the more discerning viewers will remember plot holes and stories unnaturally dragged out, most won't.  So, I absolutely expect to see Cersei's time as queen similarly dragged out next year, even though it will be a truncated season, making it less obvious w/7 episodes total rather than 10.

most of this stuff should have happened at the end of the last book anyway

two battles

cersei blowing up the sept

Based on what the show writters said I don't think Cersei will blow up the sept in the books.  I think for the show is it was a plot device to accelerate the storyline.  Also GRRM said that a few people will sit the iron throne after Tommen before the end of the books.  Now that could just be Cersei and Dani I suppose, but I doubt it.  Maybe even fAegon will for a short time.

Noooooo..

5 & 9 were good.. Too much spread out will not build up the tension or be exciting.

Episode 10 however should have been spread out like OP mentioned.

Ep6 and Ep7 were horrible. Arya should have left in episode 6, varys should have left in episode 6..

And they could have resurfaced in episode 10.

I agree with robasp2.  I think we also could have skipped a lot of Tyrion small talk with Grey Worm and Missandei and shortened Arya's arc in Bravos to get her back sooner.  Perhaps we could have had only Rickon appear at WF and leave Osha out of season 6 as we only saw another unnecessary bit of brutality from Ramsey.

Am I the only one who thinks they crammed what should of happened between 4 or 5 episodes (maybe even more) into just 1?  Arya suddenly at the Twins?  Jaime at the twins, and then suddenly arriving at Kings Landing half way across Westeros?  Varys in Dorne then all of a sudden in Slavers (oops sorry "Dragon") bay with some Dorne ships no less.  They cut out everything about people finding out about the Sept of Baelor blowing up and skip right to them plotting.  Months must have passed from the start of the episode to the end.  It's bizarre that the Sept was still smoldering when Jaime roles into town, just in time for Cersei to be crowned.  With everything that happened in between the Sept blowing up and Jamie arriving there should have been just a cold ruble pile.

Clearly this was all put together to set up for Dany's arrival in Westeros.  Also I know that they have a budget to keep to as well.  However, even though maybe they couldn't have made more episodes, they could have spread the events out a bit in the season.  Some of the episodes this season didn't push the plot line along much. They could have gotten Arya out of Braavos near the begining of the season instead of the end, or truncated the whole High Sparrow time line since we've been waiting for Cersei's trial for over a season.  Although I think this helps put in perspective what's taking GRRM so long to write his next book.  I'm sure he's not going to take such cheap shortcuts.

And yet Brienne and Pod must have come across Gendry and they are all still rowing.

Yeah, they're slaves to the model of a big ep. 9 and/or 10 and the middle episodes suffer for it. I thought eps. 6, 7 and especially 8 were pretty bad because of it.

The siege/battle of Meereen in particular should've been spread out over several episodes instead of being anticlimactically resolved in five minutes. But for whatever reason they preferred to have Tyrion's cringeworthy joke scenes instead.

Yeah, it seemed like D&D were amortizing the amount of money spent on Arya, Tyrion, Missandei and Grey Worm, so they put them in a lot of crappy scenes. They could have wrapped up Arya so much more quickly and eloquently. I have no idea what they were trying to accomplish in Mereen.

Just wanted to add the Sept would likely still be smoldering.  Large fires leave heat spots deep down that can continue

to smolder for weeks if not months, its why you will see fire services continue to douse a buildings shell for hours after the

fire itself has gone out.  With Westeros technology and the fact the Sept was on top of a hill (nightmare for water transport)

and the fire itself being Wildfire it could still be smoking by Jamies arrival.  I am more concerned about Varys being able to cross oceans

in the amount of time it takes me to changes clothes.

Did you notice the other flags on the ships? The one Theon was looking at? The Tyrells and Dorne have already joined their ships to Danys at that point. I thought it was obvious that quite some time had passed since Varys was in Dorne and when Varys was on the ship with Dany.

Arya's plotline seems very rushed to me, probably more than any other.  When Asha and Theon travelled to Dany at least we get a stopoff in Volantis where they tell us what's going on, with Arya we could have at least seen her arrive in Westeros as a group of people pass her by she hears about the party at the Twins and we see a smile on her face and we know what's what.

They really need to start the next season with getting the "where and when" of everyone in line. I think they've "got everything in the pot" as someone upthread put it and now everything needs to be on the same timer.

People get so bent out of shape over the timing of things on this show. Why let that bother you so much? They're only going to show the relevant scenes. Did you want a few minutes each episode of Varys going about his business while on a boat between Meereen and Dorne? If nothing's happening there's no point in filming it.

It's all just bad story pacing.  I'm starting to believe that D&D did not sit down and plan out the entire 8 seasons from the start.  It's almost as if they planned the first 3-4 seasons, but then figured out that they where going to slowly for their 8 seasons, so they wind up ramping up the series the last couple seasons.

It's simply bad planning and terrible story pacing.  They didn't do it right.

I think the timeline is suffering or at least perception of the timeline is suffering for the sake of pacing the episodes.

The coronation likely happens well before the meeting in Dorne. Varys returns before the conversation between Dany and Tyrion. Varys has informed them of the alliance, "You're in the great game now." Perhaps even having come with some form of marriage offer a nephew or grand nephew of the Queen of Thrones perhaps motivating dumping Daario. Arya was likely at The Twins before the battle at Winterfell or at least in Westeros.

But we come back to they needed to tidy things up and get everything in place to start the final march to the end. They've cut things and dropped things so they have a bit of the plot leading things around this season instead of the characters leading the plot around. So it feels uneven and jumbled and stretched out and condensed all at the same time.

I am thinking that since everyone noticed and criticized the uneven pacing with some storylines around and LF and Varys transporter really became a joke, showrunners will correct course. It will also help that they whittled down story to basically 3 main storylines (North, KL and Dany) and about 4 minor (Arya, Sam, BwB, Euron) who will end up attached to main storylines early on.

Whatever they say about going their way and not bending to the criticism they actually do, and this season was a direct correction to last season both in Dorne and towards women.

I think the last scene with Dany's fleet might happen months after the events of the rest of the episode. Like a season 7 preview. Varys' appearance on Dany's side would be more plausible.

Quite frankly when I saw Varys in Dorne what I was expecting was Dani to set sail and meet them in Dorne.  Then for the three fleets (Dani's, Dorne's and the Reach's) to sail from there.  It doesn't make logistical sense to do what the show portrays.  Why sails 500 ships halfway around the world just to escort another 1000 ships back, it makes no sense.  Varys should have waited in Dorne for Dani's arrival with Dorne and the Reach's fleets.

I think Arya's plot line should and could have been the mid way finale around episode 5 and 6. It went on for too long and not too much of a payoff. Then the episode 10 Frey stabbing would have been more of a surprise and the travel time would have made more sense.

They let the shock of the Hodor thing be the mid way finale which would have been much better at episode 7 for a strong finish, plus we didn't even get much Bran after the Hodor thing. Bran's story line is much > Arya's story line.

i think there is a couple reasons everything seems as its being rushed.

1. The producers aren't following the books anymore, they are the only putting the main events in that George told them about.

2. The producers "suddenly" realized they are short on episodes. And cut tons of stuff.

3. Winter came a lot sooner, then expected.

I wish the series would have been 20 episodes a season, and 20 seasons lmao. I'm still not sure it would be enough to truly cover the events in the book.

Dany needed more ships for her over powered host.
