US Politics: Hindsight on 2020

There was some discussion on the previous thread as how some Hillary supporters on the left boycotted Yuengling beer because the CEO supported Trump; this was going too far, a poster said.

Nooyi went on to condemn the way Trump has spoken about women in a conversation that also addressed domestic violence issues in the NFL. There is no place for such language, she said, “not in locker rooms, not in football players’ homes, not in any place.”

These comments moved PepsiCo to the top of the boycott list, ousting GrubHub from that position. The food delivery service earned its boycott when CEO Matt Maloney sent a company-wide email the day after the election explaining to his employees that demeaning minorities, immigrants, and people with disabilities is behavior that has “no place at Grubhub,” regardless of whether it “worked for Mr. Trump.” Anybody who didn’t agree that the company should be an inclusive place was invited to submit their resignation. Maloney later clarified he wasn’t asking people to resign if they voted for Trump, only if they support “discriminatory activity or hateful commentary.”

There is an “official” list of the many companies for Trump supporters to boycott, maintained by Reddit user “WhiteChristianMan” in a channel called r/The_Donald, “the unofficial Donald Trump 2016 subreddit.”

Obama defends democracy, if not Trump
In Athens, the professor-president delivered a dizzying civics lesson during his last major speech on the world stage.

The Senate leadership sounds a mess.

That link about the Senate is pretty funny:

Meanwhile, Sanders (I-Vt.) and Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) have joined the lower rungs of the caucus' brass, as has Manchin (D-W.Va.). They join Democratic Sens. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Mark Warner of Virginia in a caucus structure so large that rank-and-file Democrats struggled to explain the arrangement.

“I can’t remember past that. Truthfully I can’t," said Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.), after naming the top four Democratic leaders.

“There are new members. And I’m not sure I get them straight," added Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.).

This would be a mistake. It's hard to have a party that seeks to have a big tent when there's a sign out front that says, "Bleeding heart liberals only."

@Altherion,

This is a disturbing response:

Quote

A decade ago I would have agreed with you, but given that today's media, academia and politicians strongly push identity politics of all flavors, I don't see why this variant should be singled out for criticism.

Also, consider the magnitude of Trump's accomplishment: he somehow went from a rich, but scandalous celebrity to President without every holding a political or military position. Other than by using the tools that he used, how else could he have succeeded? He tried going third party before and that went nowhere. He knew that he had no chance on the Democrat side because it was Clinton's turn and because the Democrats are much less likely to vote for somebody like him in any case. That leaves the Republicans as his only hope and that primary was crowded with politicians of every variety representing every position. Take look at FiveThirtyEight's five-ring circus diagram -- Trump had to find a place outside of all of the conventional categories and that's exactly what he did.

So it's OK to advocate for white supremacy because it's just identity politics and because it helped Trump win?

Have white supremacy become identity politics and if so, are identity politics fine if they're your politics?  White supremacist is a form identity, I would note.

They should start from the bottom and start a bona-fide progressive party.

Primarying on ideological grounds makes little sense in this polarised era. You're dealing with a Democratic Party Establishment that votes the way the Left wants 98% of the time.

The residual conservatives within the Democrats are the ones who have been completely massacred over the past few cycles.

It wouldn't be easy but it is something the country needs. The tea party was and is an absolute disaster, I can't see a similar thing among the Democrats being any better.

The Tea Party has representation at all levels of government, so I'm not sure how you can quantify that it's "an absolute disaster".
