Angel Eyes
So when two highborn lords want to marry the same lady, who should get the girl? Say if Ned had a ward at Winterfell who wanted to marry Sansa at the same time as the beginning of AGOT, how would the situation be resolved? Stormking902
Her father would have the final decision, if both partys agree a duel can solve the issue as well.
Euron III Greyjoy
I imagine the father of the bride would decide. Most fathers would go with the most advantageous match, if it was between the Crown Prince and a Prince then the Crown Prince would win, if it was between a Prince and a Lord then the Prince would win, etc.
Sigella
Some fight in duels for dumb stuff like carrying their favor (Blackwood and Bracken for princess Rhaenyra) other fight duels for the girls hand (Petyr vs Brandon for Cat, even though her dad wouldn't approve). But we haven't seen any duels? Its only been trials by combat and duels wouldn't work the same? Iirc Dunk vs Longinch in tSS is called a duel, but that one went down just like a tbc. Ralphis Baratheon
As already stated the father of the highborn women will ultimately decide who she will marry. If two nobles are going to fight over a women she is likely to be low born or bastard.

300 H&H Magnum
The ward called dibs on Sansa but Cat the ambitious would do what she can to break it off and encourage Sansa's interest in Joffrey. Sansa is like to change her tune and drop the poor ward because Joffrey is a better prospect in her eyes.

Why would Cat encourage Sansa’s interest in a prick like Joffrey, who insulted Robb and tried to have Bran assassinated? 1 hour ago, Ralphis Baratheon said: As already stated the father of the highborn women will ultimately decide who she will marry. A little social climbing for the family. More honor. Higher status. She took after dad. The man who wanted to marry his daughter to a high lord. Cat didn't know of the later, Ned and Cat had the idea that bringing Bran to KL would help cure the relationship between Robb and Joffrey(dumb ideai, I know) and Joffrey was the heir to the IT, can't get a better match than this. My biggest problem with Sansa and her feelings for Joffrey is that nothing change even after Lady gets killed by Cersei orders... she still trusted the Lannisters after that.
