@The Marquis de Leech, I have some homework for you!

Uh, "enjoy"! :)

Hey, The Soviet Hobbit is the second-best adaptation of the book. I'd sooner watcher that than Peter Jackson's version.

I've actually already done the three more obscure ones:

The 1985 Soviet Hobbit

The 1966 Snyder Hobbit (this one is the acid trip version. Seriously).

The 1993 Finnish Lord of the Rings (I'm currently running a one man battle to keep this version on the internet).

I am still missing the 1979 Jackanory Hobbit for completeness purposes. Alas, the BBC never re-screened it after the initial broadcast, and so far as I know it's never been uploaded to the internet.

Were Rankin-Bass just taking the piss with ROTK.

I'd guess no. The problem comes from what they were trying to do at all (adapt the volume Bakshi hadn't), and from house-style. They'd already got Frog Gollum from 1977.

Well that just made my jaw drop a bit.

If only because I'm amazed that knowledge of it exists outside the Russophone world.
