Formula 1 2020/2021: Shits getting crazier

Recommended Posts

I don't think anyone was expecting Williams to get their first points for several years from a double points finish with Latifi leading Russell.

Haha, the cars are all over the place. Both Williams and Ocon had to bail on the track because they ran out of fuel. And Seb as well, from the look of it.

Hamilton with a hell of a comeback. So impressive watching him hunt down driver after driver like a shark chasing its prey.

Mercedes deserve some credit for the timing on that undercut though (and getting the stop done quickly). Tenth of a second further back on the track as Verstappen comes out the pits and that's a whole different race for Hamilton.

Gasly throwing his hat in the ring for Perez's seat (again). He held up Hamilton for several laps and then stole the fastest lap point from Hamilton at the end of the race.

Ocon just forgot to come in the pits by the look of it Russell definately looks like he stopped because of fuel and Seb maybe as well. That was a wild race I think Alonso probably ensured that Hamilton didn't catch Seb and more importantly his teammate.

Also the team can't tell the drivers anything on the formation lap and forming up on the grid they can obviously make plans and if you are Lewis you are probably in a tough spot being the pole sitter and watching every other driver pit for slicks before the race starts. It was a pretty ridiculous sight having one car take the lights.

Vettel being summoned to the stewards for wearing his Pride shirt during the pre-race. Vettel unrepentant: "They can disqualify me if they want, I'd do it again."

They also deserve some credit for nuking their top rival in back to back races, even if it was deemed unintentional.

Hamilton complaining a bit too hard there. Alonso made the one direction change he was allowed each time. Hamilton actually bottled a good passing chance at least twice, if not three times.

That was an epic race. Admittedly, that was largely due to an equally epic strategy blunder from Mercedes because otherwise Hamilton would have had one of his easiest ever victories as he disappeared into the distance. Hungary gets a lot of criticism for the difficulty of overtaking but if it leads to battles like the multi-lap contest between Hamilton and Alonso it's hard to complain too much about that. I think Alonso definitely won the race for Alpine there with his resistance, even if it was for the other driver. Ocon may have benefited from the misfortune and mistakes of others but he did deliver a faultless drive and deserved the win, with Vettel on his tail all race it wouldn't have been easy.

I did wonder near the end if Sainz should have tried to stop before Hamilton since it was predictable that Hamilton would be able to catch up quickly and the Ferrari would be vulnerable on older tires. I think for the other drivers it made more sense to stay out since they had a bit more of a cushion and Alonso was acting as a rear-gunner for Ocon.

The restart with only a single car on the grid was one of the funniest things I've seen in F1, although I suspect Hamilton didn't appreciate the humour.

Apparently Vettel is also being investigated because his car failed to return the required fuel sample. You are allowed to run out of fuel after crossing the line, but there has to be enough residue in the car to get the sample back, that's why drivers are told to halt immediately if they can't make the final slowdown lap back to the pits. The Williams stopped in time, Vettel may not have done so.

If he gets disqualified, that promotes everybody behind him: good news for everyone bar Verstappen, who'd get another point but Hamilton would get two more so he'd fall even further behind; however, fantastic news for Raikkonen, who'd get his first point of the season, and of course Williams would get even more.

Whelp.

Rules are rules, but it does seem harsh that he gets a more serious penalty than Bottas does for taking out a quarter of the field.

From a novices perspective that seems so incredibly stupid.

Or how Mercedes in general has screwed the last two races up and ultimately benefited from it.

Did the F1 board lease a copy of The Ginger Hammer's "NFL Wheel of Punishment" for handing out arbitrary penalties this season?

Some of the slaps on the wrist for genuinely dangerous stuff seem pretty off if they are going to penalize Vettel with disqualification for running out of gas.

Definitely the most bizarre start I've ever seen. How hilarious would it have been if Lewis got penalized for a jump start?

It's not quite as bizarre as Spa 2012, when Grosjean wiped out four cars for literally no reason in the dry (and cost Alonso the championship). At least Coulthard at Spa 1998 had the excuse of truly horrendous conditions. But yeah, there's not too many in that category.

The sporting regulations are pretty clear on these things. Not providing 1 liter of fuel after a race for scrutineering is an automatic disqualification, but for incidents like Stroll and Bottas they are free to choose from a list of specified penalties.

Masi said the penalties would probably have been harder had it been a dry race, and reiterated that they only consider the incident and not the outcome.

This Grill the Grid ended even more spectacular than I thought it would:

Counting down all the F1 world champions as far as you can.

I was okay until 1991 and then it fell apart. I find it hard to remember exactly when Prost and Senna won theirs (apart from 1988) and then you have Piquet popping up and a lot of random one-off champions it's very hard to remember, apart from Keke Rosberg and his pornotache.

1992 onwards was when I was more actively following the sport (thanks to playing Geoff Crammond's Formula One Grand Prix on the Amiga).
