https://theintercept.com/2024/02/28/new-york-times-anat-schwartz-october-7/ this is a better article but you can only read two of them if you are not subscribed, a workaround for this is to see the article in incognito

I read those pieces yesterday. It’s kind of shocking tbh. And it’s the 2nd (I think? Though I may have missed more) time I’m a few weeks where the high and mighty NYT is embroiled in issues regarding pieces they published.

Who doesn't have bias? It's not bias I care about, it's a commitment to honesty and having integrity that I care about. If I read a piece that's all "Israel must be allowed to do whatever it wants to defend itself" then it's easy to identify that as having a bias and I have my own bias and will read the piece with those things in mind. But what I want from biased and purportedly neutral news articles is clear identification of verifiable fact with appropriate context, unverified allegation and opinion. If anyone is putting forward opinion or allegation as fact then they have no place in journalism, irrespective of bias. And if they are not providing proper context to facts their journalistic skill and credibility is questionable.

The problems around these two instances have very little to do w/ bias though. Unless if we look at it from a perspective of, “they were so carried away by their biases that they failed to realise they were reporting distorted information and blatant lies”.

For fuck's sake. Just seen the latest from redactedHoly mother of God, make it stop.

It seems to me that the continued moratorium on this subject is every bit as weak and lily livered as the position taken by most of our political leaders. Shameful.

ETA: I am so fucking angry about what is going on. So if and when the moratorium is ever lifted, it is unlikely I would personally be able to participate without getting myself perma-banned. And seeing as this is my all time favourite internet hangout, I really don't want that to happen.

But...

The simple fact that the owner of this site has decreed that nobody is allowed to talk about what is happening in Gaza is troubling, and has slightly tarnished my love for the place. I remember some of the Ukraine threads getting pretty heavy, but I don't ever recall a moratorium.

@Kyoshi, a couple of articles re the NYT have been posted here but we still have a moratorium on the topic of the war in the Middle East. I assume the NYT’s bad reporting issues falls outside of that moratorium but I am not sure.

I feel the same way about the moratorium but I think I'm 5 posts away from getting banned or whatever, so I've been biting my tongue. There's a lack of objectivity in my opinion. But hey ...

It does not, to be clear. The topic is clearly covered by the moratorium, and I can't for a moment imagine why anyone would think it isn't.

If anybody wants to discuss this further, they can take it to PM. As ever, that is the only appropriate place to raise questions or comments about moderator decisions.
