Durckad
The Borders near where I work is closing so I decided to go in and pick up some semi-cheap music. I ended up getting a bunch of Radiohead and Yes albums.Considering my musical preferences, it's surprising that I haven't listened to much Yes, but that's gonna change now. I've also decided to give Radiohead a second chance. I picked up The Bends, Kid A, and In Rainbows. They still had a bunch of copies of Amnesiac, but everything I've heard from that album has been annoying.

Eyelesbarrow
Listening to new tracks by Ron Sexsmith, a brilliant Canadian singer-songwriter. (He wrote Secret Heart! Which was brilliantly performed by Feist here .) I just read that he released a new album, Long Player, Late Bloomer, last week, so I'm getting that soon. Like stat! haLobEnder
Cee-Lo's incredible cover of one of the best songs by Band of Horses: Non One's Gonna Love YouI own this album but didn't even realize this cover was on it. Guess I really need to re-listen to the back half of the album. Nice. What do you think?About what I expected from hearing 'Boyfriend' and 'When I'm With You'. That is to say it's good, but not really blowing me away.Definitely get the West Coast vibe though; It reminds me a lot of the twee/'cuddlecore' stuff coming out of Vancouver and Seattle in the middle-late 90's (Neko Case, cub, Maow, and, to some extent, The New Pornographers). That's the singer that Buckley was big fan of, right?I really don't know but it sounds plausible. He's a Sufi Qawwali singer who became pretty popular in the west during the 80's and 90's due in part to his collaborations with the likes of Eddie Vedder and Peter Gabriel. Very powerful singer. This is probably one of his better known songs.ETA: I forgot to mention what I'm listening to which is .It's a remix of Yma Sumac done by Q-Burns Abstract Message. It's one of my favourite songs/remixes of all time.
fitheach
What do you think?Listening to PJ Harvey's Let England Shake, and I really, really like it. The sound, the lyrics, the sense of place it's coming from.Loving Let England Shake! But then, I love everything PJ Harvey does- so I may not be the best judge. :dunno:

kuroishi
I just picked up It's a Wonderful Life by Sparklehorse. This is a band that I've heard plenty about but never really listened to, so I'm excited to give them a try.I was in the same position until I heard about Mark Linkous' death last year, which finally decided me to try It's a Wonderful Life. It's a great album, and that makes me think I should try to listen to the rest of their discography.
haLobEnder
You mean that you own the Cee-Lo album right? Or do you mean you own the 2nd Band of Horses Album? Wouldn't surprise me if you own both, but isn't that a great cover? The Cee-Lo album. I originally bought it as a birthday gift for my sister but I found out she'd already got it off itunes. I like Cee-Lo, and the album --what I remember of it anyway :P-- is really good, it's just not one that I find myself coming back to a lot. I vaguely recall hearing the BoH cover, but for some reason despite being familiar with the original version didn't put two-and-two together. All Zevon: Exciteable Boy version, live off Stand in the Fire, alternative take from Preludes and live at Chestnut Cabaret 8/12/90. Am trawling Archive.org for more.Archive.org has a ton of great live stuff. If you don't mind alt-country I recommend checking out The Handsome Family's live archive; The on-stage banter is what really makes their shows. Durckad
I've been listening the hell out of Stolen Babies one and only album, There Be Squabbles Ahead and man am I hooked. It's like Mr. Bungle plus female vocals and with some of the crazy turned down a bit. This song is my current favorite.
Jon AS
Anyone a fan of The Manic Street Preachers?I really only know two of their albums, This is my Truth... and Know your Enemy. I like those, but I was never inspired to obsessively get a hold of everything they've ever done.

williamjm
Anyone a fan of The Manic Street Preachers? Band from the UK that got pretty big over there and not quite as big over there. I grabbed This is My Truth Tell Me Yours at the library also. I only know one album of theirs which is Lifeblood which I really like, though I suspect it's not one of the band's hardcore fan's favorites. This band had a guitar player who literally disappeared and, I believe, has never been officially found or declared dead. Richie Edwards.I do like the Manics a lot. You're right that Lifeblood really didn't go down well with a lot of their fans - and I've noticed that on recent tours they've given up on playing any songs from it. I do like the album, I don't think it's one of their best albums but I still think it is reasonably good, I think part of the problem with it is that compared to most of their work it could be considered a bit gentle in comparison. I feel that it is maybe an attempt at a sound a bit closer to a band like Coldplay rather than their typical sound and I think it is fairly successful at achieving what it is trying to, but a lot of Manics fans probably just didn't want them to make an album sounding like that. I think you're right that Edwards hasn't officially been declared dead, but I think everyone does now assume that he did commit suicide back in 1995. I'd probably rank their albums something like: 1 - Generation Terrorists, I think their first album has a lot of their best songs (Motorcycle Emptiness and Stay Beautiful in particular), although at 18 songs long I think it does have a bit of filler.2 - Everything Must Go, I believe this is their biggest-selling album and probably their most consistent without any really weak tracks, A Design For Life is the best song on it. 3 - The Holy Bible - probably their hardcore fans' favourite album. It's definitely their most ambitious and doesn't quite sound like anything else. I think it's a tremendous achievement although admittedly not one I actually want to listen to all that often ;)4 - Journal For Plague Lovers - I think this is the closest of their recent albums to their 90s heyday.5 - Send Away The Tigers - maybe not their most ambitious album and it doesn't add anything new to their sound, but it is a good listen. 6 - Gold Against The Soul - this album often gets criticised (including by the band themselves), I think it's a bit under-rated. La Tristesse Durera in particular is one of their best songs.7 - Lifeblood 8 - Postcards From A Young Man - their most recent album isn't their best, but it still pretty good. 9 - This is My Truth, Tell Me Yours - a good start with a couple of their biggest hits, but the rest of the album is unexceptional10 - Know Your Enemy - some good stuff on here, Found That Soul and Let Robeson Sing, but also some of their weakest songs (So Way So Sad is definitely their weakest single).
