Small Questions v 10012

I think it's a neurological thing, either he's a simpleton or he suffered brain damage when he was very young. I don't think it's magical.

Yeah but is there a real world neurological condition that meets the specific symptoms, or examples of brain damage that can do this? I mean I've never heard of it. There's mental retardation leading to a limited vocabulary, severe brain damage leading to inability to speak at all, psychological disorders with various effects on speech, but I'm unsure where to place a 1-word vocabulary (combined with apparently the ability to listen to and follow directions).

I think with something like alzheimers this can happen (also I saw an episode of Scrubs where this old guy could only say pickles, not sure what his condition was or whether it's even real), but I haven't heard of a specific condition that reduces people to saying this. I had a little google but couldn't find anything I'm afraid!

What does the saying "Brick and blood built Astapor, and bricks and blood her people." mean? I understand the first part that it's made from bricks and blood but the other part seems strange to me. Based on my knowledge in English shouldn't there be a word "are" before "her people", or does this mean something else? :read:

Let me put it this way say I am King Robb back when he was alive.

Robb: Dear Lord Commander Mormont (who is the first and last law of the watch) I would like you to release my brother Jon Snow from his Vow so he may attend my army and fight along side me in avenging our father. Jon said he would also Like Sam Tarlly released to accompany him as his personal steward. I know this is a difficult matter for you and the Brothers to decide and would hope you ackowledge my families long line of distinguished service to the wall.

In recompence I am sending 100 stalwart men at arms, 4 stone masons, 2 Smiths, 4 sworn knights of house Manderly, an Umber, 200 hundred prisoners of war including 10 hedge knights, 3 more smiths, and 5 stone masons, who have offered to take the black in exchange for their release, 20 horses, 10 oxen, 2 cows, 40 chickes, 100 bags of feed corn, 10 Barrels of Ale, 1 case of arbor gold, 20 Ash handled spears, 50 castle forged swords from Winterfell, 10 Lannister crossbows, 10 Suits of chain mail, 100 new Bear pelts, 4 barrels of fresh apples, 10,000 gold, 20,000 silver pieces, 20 barrels of oil, you may keep the two cogs we are shipping them to you on from white Harbor, and a Partridge in a pear tree.

Yes I sent Maege your sister to deliver this letter cause I am that nice.

What is Mormont going to say? You think Bowen would be upset?

In the current situation it comes down to Jon making the choice. Actualyl it comes down to Jon survivng, but you get the idea.

I think if Mormont said no to 100 bags of feed corn his raven would kill him in his sleep.

I'm not really sure even Mormont has the power to nullify someone's vow. I'm sure the faith would argue that only the High Septon can absolve someone of a vow made in a Sept. The Watch has been around for thousands of years. We're given a few examples of even Lord Commanders who stayed at their posts even while their families were being slaughtered. Nobody ever mentions a story about some Stark or other noble having their freedom purchased so they could join in a war. You'd think if Mormont could simply free Jon of his vow, any Lord Commander could technically free himself no?

The verb acting before the subject "her people" is still "built." So it means that bricks and blood built Astapor's people, as well as the city itself.

You don't know that. Say Janos had become LC & Jon had accepted the offer from Stannis. Janos would have strongly protested Jon's release. Of course Stannis would have forced the issue but as far as the recognized government in KL was concerned the kingly proclamation and order from Stannis would have been null and Jon Snow would have been declared a deserter. The question of taking WF from Ramsay would remain. The legitimacy of the actions would have depended on the outcome of the war.

Who says KL is recognized government at the Wall? They have symbiotic relationship. But for arguments sake, if Slynt had become LC then everyone is dead because Jon would of never sent the letters for help the letter that Stannis responded too, and the Wildlings don't get blitzed and flanked bby Stannis.

But lets say somehow Stannis showed up defeated the Wildling and Slynt is LC, and Stannis wants to free Jon form his vows so he can join him and name him Lord of Winterfell and is legitimized.

Stannis with his 2000 men and Slynt with his 200-300 at Castle black.

Stannis: I want Jon Snow Relased from his vows does anyone have a problem with this?

Slynt: who is a known Lannister man and coward and already breaking his vows by taking orders from the crown, thus taking part in the war: I do.

Stannis: So don't care, my kingdom my laws. You get a 30 second head start. Men of the watch go pick a new LC.

2 Hours later:

Pyke: Take him he's yours.

Stannis: Smart man, had to kill Slynt you see he was in league with the Lannisters thus taking part in the war.

Marsh: But...

Stannis: Problem?

Marsh: Well I was just thinking that won't they be targeting you and Jon now?

Stannis: Ummm we are already at war, what are the going to do go more to war with me?

Stannis: Jon your now a Stark and The Lord of Winiterfell. we are sending out Ravens to gather support for you, will you fight with, we get to kill Freys and Boltons and you can avenge your family.

Jon: I am so there.

House Reed: Jon's lord of Winterfell and legitamized, lets go kill shit.

Mormont: The King in the North!

Manderly: Stannis and Stark? Well we can fight for both of them and keep our word at the same time? Totally works out for us.

Glover: Fuckin Ahhh!

Hill Tribes: We already know how this went.

Umbers: Killlllllll Freysssss!

Karstark: Hey a girl just showed up and needs The Lord of the Norths help.

Jon: Stannis while we use the wall as a base of operation to gather our strength I was thinking why not make peace with the Wildlings? We could get like 5000 more men to your cause at minimum and to help to defend the wall from the others like we talked about. We have Mance, lets use him to make a deal and we can give them some land like the New Gift.

Stannis: thinking to himself, so I got about 2000 of my own men, maybe get about 3000 from the Hill tribes, the Reeds, the Manderly's, the Mormonts, the Glovers, the Umbers, the Karstarks, the Flints, and most of the other houses of the North save the Boltons, this might even get me the Tully's plus the Wildlings????

Sansa: OMG, OMG, OMG Jon is lord of the North. We are totally going to help him right Littlefinger?

Littlefinger: Ummmmmm

Sansa: To the lords and Lady's of the Vale, Hi I am Sansa Stark, this man helped me escape from KL, he then plotted and murdered my Aunt, plotted and had Lord Jon Arryn killed, framed the perv singer, and is Plotting to kill Robert so he can use me to take control of the Vale.

Littlefinger: Fuuuuuuuuuuuuudge!

Sansa: Hello little Wobbby, my sweet wittle wobin, want to play a game?

Robin: What Game? "Sniffle"

Sansa: It's called smash the Lannisters

Robin: Smash?

Sansa: Smash!

Robin: What's a Lannister?

Sansa: Remember the little man?

Robin: SMASHHHHHHHHH!

Sansa: Ok now go tell them you want to smash the Lannisters and that Jon and Stannis are on team Robin?

Robin: Who is Jon???

Sansa: Jon is my brother and your cousin, and he has really neat giant white Dire wolf named Ghost who loves little boys and lets them ride around on his back while he bites anyone who makes them angry.

Robin: Gulp, "drooooooolllllllll"

Robin: What's a Stannis?

Sansa: He's a Lannister smasher.

Stannis: Jon are your ears Burning? Yeah and I think Ghosts ears are burning too.

Bloodraven: You know all this f...ing work and some guy on a f...ing forum goes and ruins it all. Janos Slynt, really? The Others people, what about the f...ing Others? Do you have any idea how hard it was to get Jon to the wall and name him LC? Do you? What you think ghost is about? Just a lucky coincidence he just happens to look just like me and stops Jon from leaving the watch every time he tries? But no you had to go and name Janos f...ing Slynt LC of the watch. And now Jon wants to leave because of that and is totally distracted from stopping the others. Thanks a lot man, thanks a lot! I hope your happy, no Really I do, hey how about next time use a little lube before you f... me, or how about dinner hmmmmm? Maybe take me out to a little dinner. Cause I liked to at least get wined and dined before I get f.....! We're in some really pretty shit now, GAME OVER MAN, GAME OVER!

My dad has a friend who went fishing with his dad when the old man had (I'm pretty sure it was) dementia. I shit you not, all he could say was "shit hot".

If Maester Aemon broke his vows to become a king, would the Night's Watch still come and kill him despite being a king?

Technically those were his vows to the Citadel, but I agree with the "no"

Remember Robb felt that the NW vows of one man could be overcome if they were offered sufficient exchange.

Yeah he didn't join the Watch until after Egg became king, because Egg sent Dunk and Bloodraven to escort him to the Wall. His "Honor Guard",as Egg called it, but the Citadel had offered to overturn his vows. He joined the Watch so that others would not use him as leverage against Egg.

Aemon mentions to Jon that his vows were tested three times:

Three times the gods saw fit to test my vows. Once when I was a boy, once in the fullness of my manhood, and once when I

had grown old. By then my strength was fled, my eyes grown dim, yet that last choice was as cruel as the first. My ravens would bring the news from the south, words darker than their wings, the ruin of my House, the death of my kin, disgrace and desolation.

The last time was Robert's Rebellion, the second one probably had something to do with Summerhall. What was the first time when he was a boy? Giving up a chance to be king?
