Best and Worst Decisions in the Story

I'm trying to keep these based on circumstances of the moment, not choices that turned out to be bad due to subsequent events, like Ned's decision to go to KL or Robb's to trust Walder Frey.

Good ones:

One of the best, and smartest: Hot Pie's decision to stay at the Inn of the Kneeling Man. He has no stake in the fight, so why go off with Arya and Gendry when he can stay safe and warm and bake bread?

Stannis' decision to go north: it was either that, stay at DS and get spanked or flee to Essos to become another exile king.

John's decision to let the WIldlings through: I mean cmon, what's wrong with all those fools at the Wall? Do you want to fight them once when they're alive and then all over again when their dead? Or do you want bodies to help stop the invasion? And you have their sons, so they'll be just as leal as any other house.

Littlefinger's brokerage of the Tyrell/Lanister alliance: It was the only way out for both houses, after all. Plus they had the element of surprise in the battle for KL because no one thought Lord Tywin would be able to get his army there in time. Of course, now that the threat it gone, it's probably best for LF that the alliance is about to crumble.

Bad ones:

Dany's decision to leave Vaes Tolorro: It seems clear that that is where the comet was leading them. Why leave? It would have been rough, but at least there was ground water to grow things and they could have lived off snakes and lizards. In the meantime, no one else is around and the dragons could grow and eventually hunt. Leaving for civilization at that point put her dragons in greater jeopardy. If she has any sense now, she'll fly back to Meereen, grab the other two dragons, plus Missandei and Ser Barry, order her Unsullied to march north to meet her bloodriders and then stake out some territory in the Dothraki Sea -- after she dispatches of Jhaqo and Mago and takes over their khalasar, of course.

Cersie: too many to count. From fighting Tyrion rather than working with him when Stannis was approaching to pulling Joffrey from the battlements to antagonizing the Tyrells and reinstituting the FM, she is clearly blind to the long-term safety of her house and family, focusing instead on short-term, self-serving interests.

Doran Martell's decision to wait things out: When all your enemies are fighting, best to keep yourself in reserve so that if you do have to fight the winner, he's greatly diminished.

I'm sure there are more

Wait did you say doran's decision to wait things out was a bad one? I got confused by the wording...

I agree that Stannis' decision to go north was probably the best in all the books. I mean it literally saved the wall from being invaded. And Jon's decision was great too.

For worst id like to add Jaime pushing bran off the window without thinking of the possibility of him living on. Also jon trying to take members of the wall and planning to go to winterfell. That was extremely stupid of him.

There's many more id mention but I'm about to fall asleep :P

I'm confused on your Doran point because he's under the bad decisions part but your description seems to say that him waiting was a good choice.

I'll add to bad decisions-

Ned warning Cersei.

Robb not marrying a Frey.

They have a saying that fits doran well "When two dogs fight over a bone the third one gets it"

Good:Jon trusting Val and sending her over the wall

result is Jon has earned her trust (and some affection it seems) also we got Tormund back which is more then enough of a reward. Also Jon got a toll from everyone who passed through the wall.

Worst:Stannis (Or whoever was in command) moving the bulk of his fleet into blackwater without first scouting it out and establishing a beachhead.

result:Aerys II would be happy.

Let's derail the thread into animaniacs-style Good idea/Bad idea

Tyrion

Good Idea: Convincing a sellsword to be his champion against a random knight

Bad Idea: Letting Oberyn become his champion against the Mountain

Tywin

Good Idea: Keeping his whoring secret

Bad Idea: Saying whore that last time

Doran

Good Idea: Brokering a secret marriage pact that may put your grandchildren on the Iron Throne

Bad Idea: Sending Quentin with just 5 other guys to get the bride

Lord too-fat-to-sit-a-horse

Good Idea: Making Long-Frey-pig pies

Bad Idea: Eating the pies

Lommy greenhands

Good Idea: Yielding

Bad Idea: Yielding

Poor Lommy

Best:

The Red Wedding- Walder had to do this because Robb dishonored him and was going back home leaving him to the mercy of the gigantic armies of the Lannisters and Tyrells.

The Purple Wedding- The Tyrells didnt have a choice here they needed a King they could control, Joeffrey wasnt it.

Stannis making Davos his Hand

Stannis not bringing Mel along in his fight for the North

Victarion going to Mereen- I believe Euron wouldve eventually had him killed if he refused his orders

Worst:

Rhoyce not overthrowing Lysa during the war

Everything Robb did off the battlefield except making the alliance and marriage contract with the Freys

Stannis not sailing for KL when Robert died

Stannis not marching on Tywin at Harrenhal before attacking KL
