baxus
Since the old thread will soon be closed we will need a new one. Media report that Van Gaal has bid for Hummels once again and that this time he offered 47M£.Links I have for it are in Serbian so posting them here would be useless, but I'm sure the same info can easily be found elsewhere. Any thoughts? There's no denying that Hummels is a great defender, but is he really worth that much?
MercenaryChef
It is no longer about what a player is worth. It is about how much money the buyer can afford. Andy Carroll is a fine example.
Spockydog
Agreed. All these 'United have unlimited funds' stories do them no favours at all.
Consigliere
Hummels is a top class player and we sure could use the leadership and quality he would bring to the backline. £47m is alot of money but if the rumours are true then I wouldn't be too concerned about the price. The people in charge of the finances need to ensure that we do not fall foul of FFP. As a fan, I'd rather see the money invested in top class players than lining the Glazers pockets. Alex.
Well due to FFP United have an in built competitive advantage over everyone else so it doesn't actually matter how much over the odds they're paying. The fact that they are paying inflated fees is less important than the fact they can "afford" to get an endless stream of over priced players in to improve their team and everyone else can't. ETA: That's why any talk of United fading away permanently like Liverpool after the 80's is far fetched and wrong. United will be back at some point or another soon (in the next few years) because of the enormous advantage they have which is now carved in stone. mormont
Might be worth just mercy killing Rangers at this stage Clubs (with the exception of Third Lanark) tend not to die. Rangers will always be around in some form, I suspect. But the continued financial flailing does at least have the happy effect of making Hearts' promotion push easier! If we win at Ibrox tonight we'll be 16 points in front with 15 games left to play: even a draw should do.

No doubt that Hummels is a world class player and that each and every one of us would like to see him in our team. The thing is that United's spending will have to come to an end sooner or later. As financially successful as they are, I sincerely doubt they can afford to spend as much as they did last summer on Di Maria, Herrera, Falcao (was that 12M£ for a single season loan? wages not included ;)), Shaw, etc for long, even without reported 47M£ for Hummels. Sure, they wouldn't need to spend THAT much every season since they will be filling up gaps as they go along, but still.

We have a pretty strong squad as it stands. CB is a priority though so even if we do have to fork over a huge transfer fee for Hummels, I don't particularly care. I'm confident that those in charge of the finances will ensure that we remain in line with FFP. Not sure how much is in the transfer war chest but I'd bet it is a significant amount and I'm sure LVG will be moving out a few players as well. baxus
Defoe to Sunderland is now official (warning to MC: it's a link to Sunderland's website :D).It's for 3 and a half years, which seems a bit long but what do i know. Certainly. I doubt we will need to spend 100+ million season in season out. We have a pretty strong squad as it stands. Mexal
I wish it was Sunday. Normally I'd be worried we'd shit the bed like we tend to do against top teams but for some reason, I'm feeling anticipation for this instead of dread. I think a lot of it has to do with Sanchez, Coquelin and Cazorla's form. We're still likely to face some serious issues from Aguero and Silva but I feel like this is our best shot to take some points from City at the Etiad, especially with Ozil, Ramsey and Walcott fit. Still don't trust our defense, especially at RB, but it's the first time in awhile where we have almost all of our attacking players fit (missing Welbeck) and the player with the current best form in the PL. Mexal
Lots of articles and fun charts going up today about Sanchez vs Aguero. It almost feels like apples and oranges to me. Aguero is a goal scorer, a natural born finisher who's deadly with left and right foot. In my eyes, the best striker in the world. Sanchez is a more complete player though as he has an insane work rate and is happy to do the dirty work. If you have an Aguero, you don't need a Sanchez and if you have a Sanchez, you can get away without an Aguero. So hard for me to compare them directly.
