Dawn

Yes.

Why else include it in the story?  The whole Dayne Family culture of selecting their heroes and only allowing worthy warriors to wield the prestigious weapon almost demand that we see Dawn play a role in upcoming events.

What do you think will happen?

I think the whole Dayne storyline, Ned and Ashara's supposed relationship, legendary sword waiting for the chosen son, even Ned Dayne is all just one big red herring to detract the reader away from R+L=J.

Plus darkstar, a red herring for Aegon.

I think (and hope) it will make an appearance.

I'd be interested to know how the weilder is deemed worthy.  Does the most senior member of House Dayne decide?  Is it a Sword-in-the-stone / Thor's-hammer type scenario?  Does it have to be weilded by a Dayne?

I think Dawn was the original Lightbringer.

I agree. Dawn literally ends the Long Night by Bringing Light. Dawn is the only sword that is thousands of years old, the oldest VS swords are about Five hundred.

I believe Dawn was carried by the Gemstone Emperors, of which Dany has a vision in AGoT.

A Game of Thrones - Daenerys IX

"… want to wake the dragon …"
Ghosts lined the hallway, dressed in the faded raiment of kings. In their hands were swords of pale fire. They had hair of silver and hair of gold and hair of platinum white, and their eyes were opal and amethyst, tourmaline and jade.

When the Bloodstone Emperor usurped the Amethyst Empress, a small faction of her people fled to a construction project at Battle Isle.

Dark Valyrian Steel that drinks in Light has a memory and a mind of its own, this comes from the unwilling Blood used in its forging.

Dawn is White and Alive with Light, Dawnbringer was pulled from the fire White hot and thrust through Nissa Nissa's willing heart, the Blade absorbing her courage and strength.

I also believe Dawn may flash Red to signify when in a Worthy persons hand, and that it may burn Red when confronted by the Others.

I'd love to know just how much Dayne blood must run through the veins of the Sword of the Morning.  Arthur Dayne was the son of the Lord of Starfall - do you have to be that to claim Dawn? Maekar I was married to Dyanna Dayne - and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren married their siblings (therefore no dilution of blood took place) - does that mean that Daenerys (or Jon, should R+L=J) would be deemed to have enough Dayne blood to wield Dawn?

This. Though I do not know how it jives with the story of being forged from the pale star that literally crashed into the site Starfall was built at.

I should clarify, I think all Valyrian steel swords predate Valyria. They were forged from the meteorites that fell when the second moon was destroyed as in the Qartheen legend. Dawn is different somehow, possibly just because it hasn't been reworked and twisted by Valyrian magic. I'm just spitballing that last part.

I don't see why Jon would need Dawn when he already has Longclaw and Blackfyre would be his by rights.  If he will switch swords it should be for Blackfyre, which Ilyrio gave Aegon.

How exactly is Blackfyre Jon's by rights? Aegon the Unworthy gave it to Daemon Blackfyre, so it should belong to the Blackfyre line. If Faegon is a true Blackfyre then it would be his by rights.

Even though Blackfyre was the Targ ancestral sword, whoever it belonged to can give it away to someone worthy of it. Just like Jeor gave Longclaw to Jon.
