I hope that Newcastle's takeover can be sorted out and Rafa given some money to spend in January. This game is not so important - just put in a decent performance and try to keep the scoreline respectable. The next three games (Brighton, Stoke and Swansea) are far more important.

yup.

a draw here would be a gift from the heavens.

but the next three fixtures can be 9 points.

sign a #10, a striker and a keeper. we would have enough then to survive the season.

When you see that Liverpool have just signed a central defender from Southampton for £75m, you can only imagine what it would cost Newcastle to sign a PL standard #10, striker and keeper.

Newcastle played really well in the 2nd half. Yeah, the various stats will be heavily skewed in favour of City but Newcastle created a number of good attacking situations in that 2nd half. Unfortunately they lacked the extra bit of quality to apply that final pass/cross/shot. It's another win for City though and they've now equalled Bayern's record for most consecutive wins in Europe's top 5 leagues.

ETA. it's actually 18 wins in a row so one more to equal the record. Palace away and Watford at home so chances are that record will be broken.

£75 million for Van Dijk is crazy but when you look at it Liverpool's net transfer spend this year is about £110 million, which sounds massive, but they received about £146 million in tv and prize money from the Premier League for last season. The Premier League teams really are swimming in tv money now so they can spend huge amounts of money while still living within their means.

Still, it appears Liverpool and Klopp have identified Van Dijk and Keita as the world class players they need to add to the team so having spent a lot of money and effort getting them we really need to challenge for the title next season.

Speaking of piles of tv money assuming Ashley hasn't paid himself a massive dividend surely Newcastle must have a decent amount available to spend if they're willing to do it.

Only problem with VVD is that we now have three players — with OxC and TAA — whose names basically require an acronym for efficient typing.  It’s a very impersonal shorthand.  We’ll need to agree some universal sobriquets, like we have for Hendo, Migs and Gini.  Virg and Trent should catch on.  OxC may get stuck with Ox, even though Arsenal fans ruined that with years of “the Ox”.

Welcome to Liverpool, Virg.

I can’t wait for Mourinho to moan about other clubs spending when he has spent more than anyone bar City and, even then, Utd’s net spend must be close to City’s over the post-Ferguson era.

I’ve always just said Ox.

Matip for free makes me feel better. 75m for a CB partnership isn’t too bad if they perform.

Matip, Klavan, Gomez, TAA and Robertson were all inexpensive or free.  Even Moreno’s $12m and Clyne’s $13m aren’t too bad.  Only Lovren and now VVD were really expensive.  On average our defense was relatively low cost.

Can and Coutinho were inexpensive too in our midfield and Milner free.  Henderson, Gini, Lallana and Ox are the relatively expensive ones.  Keita will be in a whole new category when he arrives.

In our attack, Mane, Salah and Firmino were all expensive but look very good value around $30m each.  Sturridge, Ings and Solanke were all inexpensive.  Origi  was not good value but not all that much money.

Our transfer business has improved a lot since our botched attempts to replace Suarez.  After the disasters of Dalglish and Hodgson, we were perhaps 50:50 on transfers with Rodgers and seem to have moved to 75:25 under Klopp — but VVD and Keita will be the main determinants of Klopp’s transfer success.

We also need an upgrade for our GK.

If Klopp can get a keeper who is capable of playing for a top 4-6 team that is trying to be a title challenger and probably a world class holding midfielder then the team will start to look very impressive.

Unfortunately for Mignolet the step up to being at a top team from the mid table teams has been too much and he absolutely has to be replaced.

VVD signing fee is pretty high but I guess that has something to do with Southampton deciding to not press the issue of Liverpool talking to VVD without their approval last summer.

He's definitely an upgrade on every single one of defenders at Liverpool's current squad and I guess we'll know if Liverpool's defensive problems are due to players' lack of defensive qualities or is it because of the system Klopp and his staff have set up.

Jordan Henderson out for at least a month

Quote

A scan has now confirmed a grade two tear in his right hamstring which means he's unlikely to play again until February.

Henderson will miss the FA Cup third round tie with Everton as well as Premier League matches against Leicester City, Burnley, Manchester City, Swansea and Huddersfield.

Early preparation for life in the Championship.

It's being reported that Everton have agreed a deal with Besiktas for striker Cenk Tosun for £25m.

Also being reported from a usually reliable Liverpool source (Melissa Reddy) that Klopp will attempt to bring in Goretzka, Milinkovic-Savic and Lemar for next season.

 Milinkovic-Sakic would be so damn perfect but he’d cost more than VVD. Guy is an absolute beast for Lazio and could go wherever he wanted.
