I see that JRM(?) has said the low turnout (low but not abnormally so) is what caused the swing - which seems... optimistic, given the labour scandals in the lead-up to polling; and the fact that if both had had the 40% turnout threshold, and had every single one of those extra voters voted tory, they'd still have lost both seats.

“We’d have won, except for the minor technicality that people didnt vote for us!”

  2. I’vs not got the edits yet for Lucifer & Son (there were a few books in front of it) but I’m hoping it will still be out before Worldcon Glasgow.

Diabolic Immunity and The Blood Hour are still on submission to publishers. DInhad a few rejections fairly early on but nothing since, and absolutely nothing yet for TBH.

I’m 40k words into my time travel heist Titanic novel, with 28k words edited into a coherent story albeit not a final draft. I’ve had some feedback from a member of my local Nanowrimo group, and sent it to my agent for feedback.

I’m aiming for about 90k words, so almost halfway. I’m hoping to have it done by end of summer but we’ll see. Then I’ll work on thr last Sooty Feather novel.

Once that’s done, what I’ll do next will depend onof I’ve sold Diabolic Immunity, The Blood Hour or the Titanic novel. If none of them are accepted by a publisher, I’ll probably switch to a different genre.

Daughters of Derbyshire, my plague story, has been accepted for publication.

The publisher in question? The Lesbian Historical Motif Podcast.

Now, to clarify, given my other recent work: Daughters of Derbyshire does not contain sex at all. Or even romance. It's actually 'clean' historical fiction, this one involving a pair of young Puritan women in 1665-1666. Aforementioned young women obviously delight in each other, but this is a relationship shaped very much by time and place. This is also my first 'professional rate' story sale (8 US cents a word), making it far and away my best ever writing payday.

    Congrats!

any word when Old Phuul is out?

I too have been fiscally responsible by not committing to spending money on roof repairs I would have to borrow at high interest rates to afford. I'm sure nothing about that decision will mean that I wind up spending more money at even higher interest rates in future.

The question is, could you afford to take out those loans? I need to get old flaking paint stripped from my roughcastign, cracks rendered over, and the whole thing repainted.

But as I’m paying off a loan taken out to completely re-do the extension flat roof and ceiling, I can’t yet. Even though it really needs doing and potentially not doing it could lead to more expensive works in the future.

To make the analogy more akin to government, maybe I’m hesitant to commit to a new loan because my wife is in charge of finances at the moment and gave all our money to cowboys who fucked uo buikding works, and is taking out loans to have the local cats hunted down and shot. So in 6 months, I may have even more loans to pay off.

Where was Finarfin during the 1st Age?  And he is called wise.  Where is Galadriel during the 1st Age?

Finarfin chilling: Hey! How was middle-earth?

Random elf leaving Halls of Mandos: Fucking sucked. Spent centuries in a dungeon being tortured.

Finarfin: Sucks to be you. Wasn’t all fun and games here; almost ran of of wine for a minute! Where’s Galadriel?

Random elf: In Middle-Earth, her daughter having been tortured into madness and is back here now from the trauma, and she’ll never see her granddaughter again.

    Finarfin: Cool, cool

That's what Finarfin did, instead Galadriel chose to help her people, the decision to leave paradise was Feanor decision, his siblings obeyed because he was the king

I know, having read the books ( and unlike you, can keep the characters straight). My point is, its not a wise choice.

  7. To be fair, making spending/tax cut promises without explaining where the money/savings are coming from is what Truss/Kwarteng tried, and as a resukt rents and mortgages shot up, and measures were needed to save our pensions.

Labour promising the earth while not knowing the full state of the economy they will inherit is irresponsible.

And you know she was wise and foresighted in the first and second ages… based on… what?

Yeah. Leaving paradise to spend years crossing an arctic wasteland in order to fight a bitter fruitless war against a god is not what I’d call wise. Wise would have been calling it a day after the slaughter of the Teleri and theft of the ships, returning home to paradise.

Fingolfin fought Morgoth in single combat and crippled him.
Echtelion slew Morgoth , the Lord of the Balrogs, he was as powerful as Sauron.
Glorfindel killed a balrog to save refugees from Gondolin.
Earendil, an half elf killed Ancalagon the Black during the War of Wrath.
Finrod killed a werewolf , meanwhile he was chained, the elf used his teeth and bare hands to kill him.
    Luthien forced Sauron into submission.
Humans strenght was the number, the elves, especially the ones that saw the Light of the Trees were the most powerful beings.

Elves fertility rate is extremely low

You’re making all sorts of mistakes today! :P

Curufin servants abandoned Elros and Elrond in a forest, Maglor adopted them and treated them as if they were his own sons , so he is completely fine

Weren’t the kids abandoned in the forest never heard from again? Elrond/Elros  were adopted by Maglor later, when the sons of Feanor attacked the refugees from Doriath and Gondolin at the mouth of Sirion.

  11. My wife and I moved to East Renfrewshire (where she grew up and her brother and retired parents still live) entirely due to the state schools, which have two of the top three or four state schools in Scotland.

This is why house prices are crazy here, but we both hsd flats to sell.

My daughter goes to a Catholic primary school despite her heritsge being athiest parents of Protestant and Jewish backgrounds (one of my wife’s grandfathers was a bodyguard of Golda Meir’s). 50% of that school’s pupils are non-catholic, lot of muslim kids.

My daughter’s feed-in secondary school is in the top 3 in Scotland. Had we stayed where my flat was, we’d probably have enrolled her in the very well regarded Gaelic school.

Eyes Wide Shut is a misunderstood masterpiece.

Deadwood pilot has me hooked. Not sorry to drop Boardwalk empire after s2. Al Swearangen reminded me of how I fell in love with old TV. How The Sopranos and The Wire felt not so long ago. Damn fine these three Davids.

They should make it a law that no more than 1 MP from any school can sit at any time.

What about the (at least) two public holidays? (Funeral and coronation )

I have serious doubt that a private school education is superior to a publicly funded school system. Are private schools repositories of esoteric knowledge that is unavailable to the rest of us? Are the teachers a better class of human beings than the rest of the population and more able to access the esoteric knowledge hidden in their schools. The only difference is better funding at the expense of those of us who have not the ability to send our kids there. As I see it a lot of the reasons for private schools is to keep your kids away from the real world and its issues for as long as possible.

If you really want a good education for your child, surround them with books and other resources so they can explore the world around them and actually learn and grow.

The advantage is probably mostly in the prestige (for top unis) and making contacts with other rich people
