NFL Draft Part 2: Who HASN'T said racist things on Twitter when they were a teenager?!?

The Redskins were my team but I've been steadily losing interest in NFL for some years. First with Snyder's stubborn refusal to change the damn name. I know most of the Washington fans when they think "Redskins" they think positively of their football team and it's legacy and any negative feelings towards Native Americans are no part of their thoughts, but it doesn't change the fact that the name is hurting a bunch of people and when it's doing that you need to change the fucking name.

Then with all the revelations about how bad the injuries have deteriorated current and former players' lives, I just couldn't watch any game at all last year because any injury I saw would make my stomach turn.

So I have no football team now.

I would come back if the name changes and the cheerleaders scandal is addressed and policies changed all for the better, and the NFL as a whole does a better job of protecting players. But I'm not holding my breath.

ETA:

and thanks to the steroid abuse thing I'm too wary of getting into Baseball, which if it wasn't for that, in recent years MLB could really have turned me into a fan.

I would be delighted if the NFL threw the book at them. Personally I think that a huge settlement (tens of millions) divided between the cheerleaders involved and some charities would be better.  Dan Snyder wants a winner who makes money, but if he has to choose between a team that wins and a team that makes money, he'll take the money every time.

I think that should happen too, but you also have to hit them where it hurts, and that’s their picks, and not day 3 picks. They need to be first rounders and it must be plural. The Racial Slurs are a corporation, and they basically forced their female employees to be strippers and escorts. And I can all but guarantee these were not one off events. They likely occurred several times, and there’s no way that the people atop the company did not know about this.  This is significantly worse than the Ray Rice incident. If there was video or photographic evidence, this would be the lead story on every show on every network.

Getting a little dusty here... Nice Sports Illustrated feature on a team reunion organized by Eddie DeBartolo for Dwight Clark as he battles ALS. Even Charles Haley showed up!

https://www.si.com/nfl/2018/05/03/dwight-clark-als-49ers-reunion-eddie-debartolo

Tangentially related to the Snyder talk: DeBartolo, whatever his flaws and sins, was the kind of owner who engenders warm feelings and loyalty in players and fans. He even commissioned an NFL Films production to honor Clark's career. The team hasn't been the same since he was forced out. But I'm glad he managed to get hold of the goalposts from Candlestick. Tellingly about the Yorks who replaced him as team owners, they thought they still had the goalposts.

The more I think about this Washington scandal, the more disgusted I get. This should be the top news story on every sports site, and it’s largely going ignored. What happened was flat out illegal. Furthermore, they did it to employees who were overworked and underpaid. If Snyder was a CEO and not an owner, the board of executives would have already forced his resignation, if not flat out firing him. The NFL needs to come down HARD on Washington. Max fines for everyone involved, and personally, I’d strip them of their next two first round picks, and warn every other team in the legal that they will all be investigated and the same punishment will be handed down for any team caught doing anything similar.

This sounds NASTY.

The Redskins find new lows to sink to...

When the Washington Redskins took their cheerleading squad to Costa Rica in 2013 for a calendar photo shoot, the first cause for concern among the cheerleaders came when Redskins officials collected their passports upon arrival at the resort, depriving them of their official identification.

For the photo shoot, at the adults-only Occidental Grand Papagayo resort on Culebra Bay, some of the cheerleaders said they were required to be topless, though the photographs used for the calendar would not show nudity. Others wore nothing but body paint. Given the resort’s secluded setting, such revealing poses would not have been a concern for the women — except that the Redskins had invited spectators.

A contingent of sponsors and FedExField suite holders — all men — were granted up-close access to the photo shoots.

One evening, at the end of a 14-hour day that included posing and dance practices, the squad’s director told nine of the 36 cheerleaders that their work was not done. They had a special assignment for the night. Some of the male sponsors had picked them to be personal escorts at a nightclub.

“So get back to your room and get ready,” the director told them. Several of them began to cry.

“They weren’t putting a gun to our heads, but it was mandatory for us to go,” one of the cheerleaders said. “We weren’t asked, we were told. Other girls were devastated because we knew exactly what she was doing.”

There was a New York Times story where they were sending cheerleaders into fans' homes to hang out during games.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/10/sports/cheerleaders-nfl.html

Several years ago, she said, she and five teammates were told to drive to an address the Redskins had given them. To their surprise, it was not a business — it was a house. Inside, there was no party, no charity event, or even a large gathering of people. There were seven men in their 40s who quickly sized up the cheerleaders.

“O.K., who’s single and who’s married?” said the homeowner, according to the former cheerleader.

The men were drinking and asked the women to join in, but they declined. Then the women did a two-minute dance for the men in the basement and spent the rest of the afternoon walking around the house or having awkward conversations with the men while they were watching an N.F.L. game on TV.

“It was sketchy because we were in some dude’s house, some random house, and it was physically uncomfortable to be there,” the cheerleader said.

The way this cheerleader saw it, it was unfair that the team was making money off its cheerleaders who were paid so little. Someone just had to call the team and the managers would ask, “How many girls do you want for how many hours?” and “Do you want the girls to dance, or not?”

“It’s literally like you’re calling for an escort,” the cheerleader said, recalling that she was paid $100 for a promotional event, while the team would charge $1,200 per cheerleader.

Charging fans money with no vetting and sending unprepared cheerleaders into unsafe situations while giving them 8% of the fee you charged for them is so very very Dan Snyder. I bet he and Brucie were three martinis and two rails into a working lunch when that idea crystallized.

I've seen a few people argue, including Matthew Yglesias of Vox, that the Redskins straight up broke Virginia law (the Redskins are headquartered here) on human trafficking and that the state AG, Mark Herring, should file charges if the Feds don't.

https://www.oag.state.va.us/files/HumanTraffLaws.pdf

The most relevant part is that the Redskins confiscated the cheerleaders' passports, which is explicitly illegal under that statute. Everything else could maybe be explained away (though I doubt it), but that one is clearcut.

I don't know the technicalities of the law, but just off the top of my head I'm guess there are laws that state that you can't make your employees strip, which should have been obvious to everyone there. I'm also guessing there are a whole host of workplace safety violations. If I owned one of the other 31 teams. I'd have my entire legal team speaking to anyone of current and former employees who could have been involved in something like this and all kinds of NDAs would be going out.

Ya'll couldn't learn from the Vikings love boat scandal, could ya?

Pork face Ben is now declaring a further 3-5 years of NFL service. This is the dude that annually brings up how close he may be to retirement. Clearly the Rudolph pick got under his skin. Can't see him playing that long. Maybe 2 years. Wonder if this will turn into a Farve/Rodgers type relationship.

Steelers converted over $8M of Shazier's 2018 salary into a signing bonus. Nice gesture.

Probably the only positive thing I have seen about the NFL since the draft was done.

This whole cheer thing is just fucked up. Being a Cowboys fan I am worried something will come out about them soon. Makes me hate those stupid fucking stripper cages Jerry installed at the new stadium even more. Just ridiculous.

I read an article about Dez Bryant yesterday about how most teams wouldn't even pay him league min to get him. Also that Baltimore offered 3 years 21 mill and he turned it down! Sounds like he is so hurt that Dallas cut him that he is hell bent on playing for a team in the East so he can play Dallas twice...dude get over it. It appears Dallas made the right call since no one wants to sign him.

I can't knock that move by the Steelers. Brady's career renaissance started after they drafted Handsome Jimmy. And now that he's been traded, Brady gives no fucks.

There's no way he plays another 3-5 years. I agree it's 2 tops, and they drafted the perfect guy to groom while he's still there. Once your veteran QB mulls his future and retirement, you have to draft your future QB even if you're still in a win now mentality. I full believe 5 years from now we'll be saying the Giants were idiots to draft Barkley, and that's nothing against the kid. Rare is it that you find yourself at the top of a QB loaded draft class. I would have taken Rosen, but it doesn't matter who they picked really. You find your top two guys and take whichever falls to you or trade back a bit and move back up if a run on the QBs begins.

Agreed on both. He said today that he was surprised when they took Rudolph. Thought they'd draft someone in the third that could help them right now. His narrow sightedness is funny. He can only see drafting someone that benefits him as a good pick, and an even worse pick is someone who will most likely be his successor. I've stood up for him in the past, andI don't quite know why I ever did. The guy is a complete deuche.

He was overly ridiculous today in that interview, but I'm not surprised, he's a drama mama.

You assume that the Giants rated those QB's as franchise leaders. If they didn't think the QB's were worth it, or maybe they only liked Mayfield, then they made the smart pick. Sound bytes came out since the draft that several teams had Mayfield #1 by a wide margin, even the hoodie was supposedly going to make a move for him at #2.

Mark Ingram out for the first 4 weeks for PEDs. Gotta think that's gonna screw up the dynamic run combo they had last year with Ingram/Kamara. That really was the perfect power/finesse duo I recall seeing recently. Though it seemed like Kamara went up the middle more than one would think a guy of his stature would.

I've always wondered why teams don't replicate what USC had in Bush and White. It seems smart to me to have an old school power back in tandem with a home run hitter unless you're lucky enough to have a guy who can do both.

In other news, IDK what to make of this story:
