Jace, Extat Posted February 25, 2019 Share Posted February 25, 2019 It is an altogether horrifying and undignified reality we exist in when the delightful 'Black Panther' is not only nominated for but a stealthy favorite to win Best Picture. I mean I accepted that the Academy was so full of shit as to be irredeemable some ten years or more ago but good Zod I never thought we would be here. I mean look at what it's up against! 'Bohemian Rhapsody' was so middling I forgot I'd seen it the other day. 'Vice' didn't even know what the fuck film they'd made until after the advertisements were seen as wholly uncouth. I can't speak for the others, but the simple presence of these three represent the absolute degradation of an ever absurd and unjust but once dignified process. We have a fine film that pissed away its own shot at transcendence in pursual of pleasing idiots. Then a lazy, altogether slapdick biopic content to meet the bare minimum requirements of entry to the ranks of the prestiged. And rounding out this terrible trio would be the aforementioned confused attempt at reactionary reflection into the political campaigning of a warmonger. And I'm glad the Academy made the right choice. In terms of supporting actress, I'd say a very good performance by an American actor, telling a very American story in a very good movie will pretty much always beat out a very good performance by an actor telling a very not American story. So no surprise that Regina King wins. I'm glad BlacKkKlansman won for adapted screenplay. It deserves something. Is it Spike Lee's first Oscar, or has he won before just not for director or best picture? First man needed to be thrown a bone since it bombed so hard in theaters and ended up being pretty boring with nothing else going for it. It did do a good job in the SFX department, and it's nice to have sfx that you barely realise are sfx rewarded as opposed to big action in-your-face sfx. Coleman's performance was excellent. I wouldn't say better. Colman deserved the Oscar, winning it fair and square. It was just that moment when people thought this was the last time for Close to be in conversation for winning. One great career may end without Oscar... That's really sad.
