Mladen
So, it seems that ratings were actually UP from the last year's show
Suzanna Stormborn
So Happy Coleman won!!! Spiderverse was awesome but I think Isle of Dogs deserved the Oscar. Black Panther shoudl have won over Greenbook, but was happy to see BP win a few. Always a fan of Comic Book flicks getting recognition. Bohemian Rhapsody was not good. full stop. I love Queen but could hardly make it through the whole movie. Can't believe that was Rocket actually singing on stage last night #mindblow Also him and Gaga need to ease up, I was like 'Dude your wife is sitting right there....' Cas Stark
I'm not that surprised that ratings ticked up a bit, since there were three very popular movies in the running. I did feel like the presenters were a little lacking in star power and was not a fan of adding in non actors to do presentations. I think now we know what has been bogging down the show all these years: the host, totally unnecessary time waster as last night's crisp and shorter show proved. However i thought the wolf of wall street was the best acting performance of the last 20 year so obviously I think he was robbed (anyone who comes in with a Daniel Day Lewis performance can fuck right off, the most 'emperor's new clothes' mother fucker in history). Except the one he didn't win. The name of the father was a remarkable performance. This will almost certainly be the craziest thing I read today. DDL is fantastic in everything he’s in. A Horse Named Stranger
Bohemian Rhapsody was a bad movie plain and simple. We can all agree on that. Despite all, Rami Malek put in a pretty decent performance as Freddie (he can only work with what's given to him). The main problem with the movie lies more with May and Taylor, who are more into glamourizing and monetizing Queen and its legacy (hence also their tribute acts with Adam Lambert). So I thought it's at least justifiable to give Malek the Oscar. I mean you can't say any of the other Male Leads were clearly robbed, can you? I think Lucas Hedges performance in Ben is Back was underappreciated, and it had deserved a nomination. Best female lead was a coinflip imho. It could've gone either way. Tough on Close but no major injustice. Best Picture. I don't hold a particularly strong opinion on that, however I will say only that much, if you feel a Marvel Super Hero Movie was a strong contender for Best Picture then it must have been a rather weak year in movies. It was an incredibly weak year in cinema. Across the board, there were very few good movies. The only movie from this year that will be talked about in a decade is Black Panther, which says a lot. Roma will also be remembered……..in film study classes. But everything else? I doubt it.

Green Book is exactly the sort of forgettable movie that will be on a 'how did that win?!' list in years to come. Thats why I think it was the obvious winner. But its difficult to see what would have been a better winner. The Favourite is a better movie, but less accessible for example.

There will be blood was jaw dropping in its wanky pretention and indulgence, closely followed by GONY. Though i do accept he was remarkable in in the name of the father. No one would remember TWBB is not for DDL's performance. Even with a good actor like Downey Jr or Edward Norton.

It won't be remembered, people barely thought about it this, but Cold War was fantastic, and I think the best black and white foreign language film nominated this year. Also, I think there's a decent chance A Star Is Born will be remembered (certainly it will come up again when there's another remake in 25 years). And there's some other movies that will be remembered fondly that didn't get any nominations at all; like Creed II, Annihilation, Searching, Halloween, and Crazy Rich Asians. I watched Creed II last month and I already don't remember it. 1 minute ago, Cas Stark said: It's been 'a weak year for movies' for at least the last 5 years, maybe longer. I wonder when the Oscars will start to include TV shows and stop giving awards to movies altogether.

Well, I love both those movies. The latter almost entirely for DDL. My favorite thing he’s been in is actually Last of the Mohicans, though. Which he gives a pretty subdued performance. The weird religious dude (I can't really remember the plot) put in a more nuanced and plausible performance.
Heartofice
Have to agree that I never liked DDLs performances. Its easy to think its good because he's the louded and most showy performance, but thats not the same thing. I much preferred him in Phantom Thread. The Revenant, Fury Road, Sicario, The Force Awakens, Room, The Martian, Hateful Eight, Brooklyn, Creed (haven’t seen that one but people rave about it). As far as this year, most of my favorites were horror, Hereditary (my favorite movie of the year), A Quiet Place, Annihilation, Mandy...
