PC Woes need some help.

Essentially the issue from the small stuff thread, I have sorta hit a wall now.

1. Windows 11 has decided to kill itself. The integrated repair/reinstall on the Computer is not working.

Thus...

2. I created a bootable USB to re-install windows 11 by those means. When I try to install windows there, it says can't access, need to repair first.

Putting me back on square 1 or Step one.

That's where I am kinda stuck and would appreciate some advice.

I saw earlier that you had another PC running XP? My wife's PC, which I bought her, way back, originally ran Windows Millenium. Right now, after putting in a solid state hard drive she is running Windows 11. It is not the best, and any time it decides to upgrade problems ensue but they do get sorted and it runs reasonably well for what she does. She is not a power user in any way but she is happy. Could you upgrade your older PC?

It sounds like it's still trying to boot from the corrupted windows installation on your hard drive.

After creating your bootable usb drive, you need to tell your machine to change the boot order. This is usually done by mashing either F11 or F8 just as the logos appear onscreen after switching on.

You then have access to the boot menu, where you tell the machine which device to boot from.

Nah, that was included in step 2. I could and did choose boot from USB.

Only thing I could still do, which I am shying away from for now is the format command.

USB boot let's me select from this traditional blue screen install windows only for it then to mout off about need to repair.

Nah, this is one is old, like proper old. I mentioned how old it was back in another thread when ran talked about his new computers. For this one to be Win 11 compatible, I'd need more RAM (like much more), to get the horse power for the ram upgrade I would need to replace the mainboard (so essentially a new PC, that's why I decided to bite the bullet last year and get a new one).

You should definitely format the HDD.

Ok, I forgot about checkdisk via dos command. I am gonna give that a try. Thanks ran.

Let's hope it works.

Edit:

Nope.

Good news the HDD has no apparently no errors.

But I got another idea.

By the power of grayskull.

ffs.

Bootrec /fixboot access denied

Did you run command prompt as administrator? If no, that may help. If yes, maybe try bootsect /nt60 all /force /mbr to try and rebuild the boot record.

And then... I don't know, maybe bootrec /rebuildbcd to try and recreate the boot config?

I mean, if you're happy to pay for shipping, I have a relatively decent, five year old machine you can have for gratis. Not sure of the exact model, other than it's my Mum's recently decommissioned and factory resetted HP Omen Desktop. Not sure what card it's got, but pretty sure the processor is an i7.
