Should Jon Snow return Longclaw to House Mormont?

It's a family possession, not individual one, and it's supposed to stay in the House, period. Even Jorah, who was utterly desperate for money, didn't dare to sell it. Even Tywin Lannister can't find anyone to sell him such a sword no matter the huge sums he offered.

But of course the rules were bent in favour of the special snowflake as usual.

And the heir "it's supposed" to not bring shame to the family, to the point that his father chose to left his position of Lord of the House to go freeze his ass in syberia

Let's not pretend Jeor one day woke up like "sorry junior, but i think we should give family sword to that bastard with the badass wolf, cuz is a cool character imho! #teamsnow"

Again, the change of animal head pretty much say the whole story, Longclaw is no more a Mormont sword

It's worth remembering that in the real world, for many years you could not leave land to someone in a will. Why? Because the land belonged to your family, not you: you were simply the latest person looking after it for the family interest.

Same with Longclaw: Jeor is current custodian of the sword for the Mormont family. He has no more right to give it away than, for example, a future Lord Stark has to give Winterfell away. Jon has no business carrying around the Mormont family's weapon.

Presumably it will revert to house Mormont upon his death, else if he is crippled/sickly before then he will grant it to the Mormont most worthy of wielding it.

The only other reasonable option is that the sword serves as the badge of office for the LC of the NW, I don't think it would be acceptable for the sword to leaving House Mormont AND the Nights Watch.

If you don't get a famous sword for killing a zombie that hasn't been seen for over lets say 1000 years what do you get a famous sword for?

Jon was in the right place at the right time. If Bowen Marsh had stumbled onto the wight, and set it on fire, would Bowen be entitled to a Valyrian steel blade?

Better yet, seeing as Sam Tarly went one better and killed an actual Other, where's Sam's Valyrian blade?

Sam got an inbred girlfriend and damn isn't that just worth ten thousand magic swords?

Jon saved the LC. Sam didn't.

I think that he should return the sword. In fact after Jorah disgraced himself and hauled ass, I don't think the sword should have been returned to Jeor in the first place. As head of House Mormont, Maege was entitled to keep the sword for herself.

She could have kept it if she wanted it but she chose to send it to Jeor and he choose to give it to Jon. Jeor realized that when dead men are trying to kill you it might be a good idea to have a Stark with a Valrian blade defending the wall. The Mormonts are a different breed and huge friends of the Nights Watch . I don't think any of them are sitting around worrying about whether or not they will get Longclaw back later on. They probably will take it as a great honor that their sword is being wielded by the LC of the Nights Watch who also is a Stark.

Agree completely.

Jon should have never even been given the sword. But David Selig is right the rules don't apply to Jon. Now lets see if everyone would have been alright if Robb just gave Theon Greyjoy or a Frey Ice because he saved him that last time. Jeor was the only of age male in the Mormont family that wasn't in exile. Of course, Maege would send it to him if she thought it would be useful to him instead of just sitting around for a decade doing nothing.Even though hes Night Watch, Jeor and Maege are still siblings

Don't underestimate just how huge Jorah's crimes were against the honor of House Mormont. The Mormont are a old and proud House. They were given Bear Island by a Stark years ago and have a ton of loyalty to House Stark. The fact that Jorah became a slaver and had forced Ned Stark to actually come to Bear Island to take his head has to be a huge stain on their honor plus the fact he ran away and did not acceot his punishment makes it worse. Their shame is probably why they sent the sword to the Nights Watch and why Jeor kept it hidden away. Jeor was probably hoping that Jon would redeem some of their honor by using the sword to defend the wall.

I think Jeor was out of order giving Longclaw to Jon, it belonged to House Mormont. If Jeor or Maege didn't want it, one of Maege's daughters should have had it. Failing that, keep it in storage until someone does want it. But he gave it to Jon and therefore Jon is entitled to keep it. However, I think he should make sure that it is returned to House Mormont in the end. I think Jon should get Oathkeeper with the other half of Ice being returned to Rickon. As Ice is now 2 swords, it would be fitting if Jon got one half and that sword remains in the NW. If Jon gets Oathkeeper then he has no need for Longclaw and should then return it to House Mormont.

Although you have a point in that a VS sword belonging to a family instead of an individual, but just like realms, swords can be plundered by force a la Red Rain. The Lannisters are in no way obligated to return Widow's Wail and Oathkeeper to the Starks (although that case is special as Ice was not a single sword but a name carried on for centuries.)

families also are prone to run out of heirs or wielders, No matter how precious it may be, a sword of that kind just getting dust in a corner (like Dawn, Widow's wail and Dark Sister in some part of the north) are of little to no use and a family or the head of one are free to give and/or lend the sword to someone who made them a personal favor or great service... No one batted an eye when Dark Sister came into Bloodraven's hands and Egg even let him keep it when he was banished from KL, most likely for his services to the realm and the Targ line even when he was a bastard of a fool, legitimized or not.

In any case, things that relate both Starks and Mormonts are always special cases. Remember that House Mormont owes their seat to the king in the north.

And for fuck's sake, it's also in the best interest of plot, stop throwing your hate for Jon in the issue. The big man said he needed one for his task, and he was given one, and thet's all.
