another thing people is forgetting.

Jon being so casual about sex somehow diminishes his own relationship with Ygritte. It was a conflict for him. For a guy who was definitely very brokenhearted about leaving his first and (so far) only love because he chose duty instead, it makes little sense to say "yeah, go and play house with Gilly in Oldtown!". bookJon actually tells Sam "I know you love Gilly as I loved Ygritte, but none of that could have happened at all".

I understand your point but I don't think his reaction to Sam's confession diminishes his relationship with Ygritte. I think this version of Sam is obviously more confident and the fact that he wants to be a maester to serve the Watch better shows he knows he is aware of his duty. I don't think Jon is worried Sam will forget his mission.

Bad pussy is the words of a sexually liberated woman who feels secure in her own body. She knows how sex works and is open to talking about it. It's very much in line with her character and the Dornish atmosphere she was raised in.

Boom

:agree: And for the record, fat pink mast is much worse, no matter how spasmodically show-haters try to justify it. It's superfluous like nipples on a breastplate, nuncles..

I sometimes wonder how Martin would be able to write sex scenes if all the images readers like to mock, like fat pink mast, myrish swamp, her cunt became the world, etc...,weren't allowed. Would people have prefered pure clinical pornography ? Or a book with no sex scenes at all ? Personnally while I have to recognize "fat pink mast" was not really the best litterary creation ever, I tend to prefer this style that he tries to write these scenes in a creative way giving each its own feeling to accounts of what happened only using the words penis and vagina, or the systematic cut of every sex scene in what is supposed an adult serie.

The sex scenes are the worst part of the books (maybe except only for Dany's chapters in Dance). Yes, I'd prefer the books without them. What's the point? These scenes are better on the screen regardless.

"Nipples the size of saucers"?! :ack:

aside from the fact that there doesn't need to be graphic anatomy descriptions in a fantasy story about zombies, he's also just not very good at writing about sex. it's okay to acknowledge and accept that.

I don't think Asoiaf is meant to only be a fantasy story about zombies.

It's a story about human beings situated in a fantasy context, but who still give desserved and logical importance to things happening in their lives, including sexual experiences, most of them also happening to have a strong nipples fetish. :cool4:

More seriously I agree he's not very good at writing those scenes, but it would be stranger to completely avoid them with his PoV narration system, and worse to make them clinical rather than imaged.

Why is Martin "bad at writing sex" at all? He has some odd choices (like the whole nipple twisting...) but in general, they are in context. Sam's words about his pink fast mast are from a awkward guy who barely knows sex; Cersei's calling Taena's vagina a "Myrish swamp" not only makes emphasis on the fact she's dismissive about the act but also racist and Jon's sex scenes with Ygritte are very cheesy as they could be due he's a virgin who is very much in love. There is nothing wrong with Arys and Arianne's scenes either as it's very clear that he's also a prude who has been celibate for years.

People is used to a very "rose" prose when it comes to sex. This is not erotica to find that. If you want to read sex scenes that reek with over-the-top words, read E L James instead :dunno:

Boom

Boom to you because it's not.

Arianne is a sexually liberated woman and she doesn't go around saying stupid things like that. She teases Arys a lot about how he's all about duty when he could have her instead. In her mouth, the words sound great because we know Arianne is what she claims to be, and yet, she doesn't say it aloud. In fact, she makes fun silently of Arys when he told her some silly lines about how she makes fade the stars with her beauty or something. "Oh, he's been practising the whole line for days, surely!". I'm sure Tyene has been to.

showTyene is a ridiculous character. Her whole "tell me I'm pretty" dialogue sounds like a girl who wants to prove how badass and sexual she is when she's not. Her character, and what we've seen on screen doesn't seem like she's strongly empowered enough to call herself "bad pussy" because everything she -and the whole arc- has done has been laughable (and if she fucks as she fights, then, lol). "Show, not tell". She's telling us she's a girl above the rest. Everything her tv characterization has showed us says otherwise.

Why is Martin "bad at writing sex" at all?

Because the wordplay is bad. And if it was because of the characters inexperience then Sam's chapters regarding almost everything would be full of equally poor metaphors. But it only comes up during the sex scenes, because it's not a strong suit of the author. Usually it sounds like he is focusing on his own fetishes over and over and punctuating it with bad vocabulary. There's a reason why 'fat pink mast' is an ongoing joke here; it's not because of Sam's immaturity.

Did you know you're allowed to find fault in the things you love? Criticism is healthy.

Actually, that's the main criticism I have about the subject. What kind of dialogues people expect in a sex scene from Martin? Because, while I expect this scene to happen, I'm also terrified in how a possible "not platonic" encounter between Connington and Daeron Sand might occur. I'm definitely not expecting silk sheets or soft caresses between two rough guys who are past their teen years. If it happens, it will be awkward to read, and what can I do about it? It's how the guy writes.

I read a lot of erotica. Sex is always clean and perfect there. No one farts, no one stains the sheets in a way that you dread to even touch them next day, every woman has orgasms after their first time of vaginal penetrative sex and men can have everlasting erections and don't fall slept morning after either. Because that's what people want to read and that's fine. Sex is also very magical in fantasy books. Had Tolkien written sex, that's the kind of sex he would write: it would be magical perfect sex, with perfect words and beautiful depictions of everything. But that's not how Martin wrotes.

Sex is messy, and GRRM is a writer who is know for his realistic and messy portrayal of things. There are no heroic deaths in his books as much as people shitting themselves after dying, which happens more often than many would believe. We have Dany having diarrhea in her most important chapter because she gets sick drinking filthy water. Why would his sex scenes be different? He doesn't romanticise things like many other authors do and I've find my peace about him in that aspect.

I'll be honest. I didn't care for the Dorne storyline. However I WAS super intrigued by the character El Chapulín Colorado. I can see this guy sitting on the throne!

Do you realise the character is a satire to USA super heroes, right? One of his sidekicks is called "Super Sam" and his words are "Time is Money!".

What am I even asking, of course you don't.

(also, was that a jape at me? How incredibly racist of you...)

Instead he writes them quite badly and make them awkward and embarrassing with his wording. I bet you would agree if we were in book discussion section but not here. Never in here.

U wot m8?

Her arc is bad but I really don't know what you wanted to say with all of that. Bronn liked what he heard, so she got what she wanted. Bad writting yes, not as bad as Fat Pink Mast though.

Only after some research on Wiki. I just know him as a fixture on Telemundo. I honestly thought he was a character on a Tele Novela. (sp?) I'm not trying to be racist. I for one would take a 24 hour Cahpulin channel over one episode of Duck Dynasty or Here comes Honey Boo-boo.
