They're Racist and We Know It - A UK Politics Thread

1200 international experts have condemned the reopening plan, deeming it reckless and not supported by science.

Looking at the vaccination figures, they have a point. The effectiveness of one jab of any of the vaccines against Delta, Delta Plus or several other variants is dubious, with both jabs needed to convey much more powerful resistance. However, the double-vaccination rates have only reached 53% of the population. That leaves a vast swathe of the population - half, obviously - open to infection. It is possible more people will be infected in the UK in the coming weeks and months than have been infected in the entire pandemic to date.

The government seems to be basing its hopes on the fact that the fully unvaccinated mostly comprises younger people who are at much less risk of hospitalisation and death, and that the fully-vaccinated part of the population can act as firebreaks preventing spread of the virus in the general population. With 50,000 cases a day and rising rapidly, that seems to not be working at all (as noted previously the vaccines are great at stopping hospitalisations and deaths, they are not nearly as effective at stopping spread). The other hope is that with the current pace of the vaccination programme, almost all adults will be double-jabbed by the end of September, which will massively curtail the worst results from the virus.

The other hope, that the combination of the vaccination and people previously infected by the virus will create a herd immunity effect that stops the virus spreading, does not seem to be entirely supported by the numbers. That will eventually have an effect but it looks like hopes we might reach that point very quickly and see cases dropping off are premature. The virus would still be able to spread amongst vaccinated people, greatly increasing the chances of it developing new and more problematic variants.

Doctors are also reporting much greater resistance and hesitancy amongst younger people and older people who have so far not received the vaccine, indicating we might also hit a wall of hold-outs who refuse to get the vaccine at all, but that number still seems to be much lower than in the US or other European countries.

Just spent 40 mins sitting in the lobby of a train. It was hot and packed, and that many people shouldn't have been allowed to get on. Lots of people possibly returning from Cardiff (according to a notice on the train operator's website) plus families from the Midlands heading back from the coast. If a single person had Covid when they got on board, a lot more will have soon.

I'm not dead set against relaxing some restrictions, but it's a nightmare of a free-for-all already.

I guess nobody is surprised by this.

Stewart Wood, a Labour peer, said:

It’s as though the prime minister & chancellor have sat down & thought: “Our biggest weakness is an angry British public thinking it is one rule for them & a different rule for us. How could we make that even worse? I know…”

To be fair, they say that they don't have to self-isolate because they're taking part in a new daily-testing trial that didn't exist until yesterday - a trial with 2 participants by any chance?

I see not problem with the messaging here, that can't be solved with a 3-word slogan. how about "Fuck Off Peasants"?

Yes, and I'm sure the existence of this trial will be of great comfort to the 530,126 people who are not on this trial, and have to self isolate.

There needs to be a way for critical workers to go out of this ‘pingdemic’ and for there to be a much more sensible way of handling test and trace, which is just a nonsense right now.

That doesn’t mean that Boris ask Rishi get to opt out of the system cos they got a ping, there is already a justified sense of ‘one rule for them and one for us’ and this is just the latest occurrence.

This will really not go down well. Claiming they randomly got selected by the system just isn’t going to cut it.

Edit.. seems both have now said they are going to isolate, backlash was pretty severe it seems

what is the fastest U turn Boris has done from announcing something?

And did he U Turn this fast due to people complaining or because he realised he could miss the last PMQ's before summer shutdown?

At 98 minutes - this one's got to be up there.

Good question - on the one hand, a populist is gonna populist; on the other hand, a coward is gonna coward...

Since Boris and Rishi can both do 99% of their job on a computer and over zoom there is no reason to consider them critical workers who need to be in a workspace where they can potentially spread the infection.

Plenty of us continued to work full-time at home during extended lockdown periods. Almost every MP can do the same when pinged. All of the US govt officials I work with from time to time have been full-time working at home for over a year now. It's funny how the US federal government, even under Trump, exercised a comprehensive work from home policy, at the same time as telling everyone to get out from home and get back into the office.

Gammons: we are sick and tired of these foreigners eroding our culture with their foreign ways and customs. We are particularly annoyed at Muslim women being forced to cover their heads and wear long, flowing robes that completely conceal their womanly form. This is an outrage, and would never happen in England.

Really love old footage like that, it’s awesome to see. Not sure what point you are trying to make there.. some very confused logic.

Just thought it was interesting that every single woman is wearing what is essentially a hijab.

Yeah in 1901.. and they didn’t have to ( I’m guessing that their hair was pretty grotty and wanted to hide / protect it)  plus it was probably bloody cold.
