I wouldn't be surprised if this is the same reasoning for bringing Greenwood back - get him back to match fitness and playing again and if the blowback is too damaging then there's a better chance of selling him which would be more financially beneficial than tearing up his contract and paying out compensation. There's another article in The Athletic where United’s head of fan engagement said regarding Greenwood: “It’s not accurate to say we’ve had full consultation with the fan advisory board on what decision we’re making.
