Hardly a surprise that Phillips and Maguire got picked. CB and DM are England's weakest positions. Phillips is basically England's only other option at DM after Rice.

I could see Maguire being in danger of losing his starting spot (to Colwill) but not his place in the squad - the competition isn't that good+Maguire has always been a solid performer for England and NT managers tend to stick with players they've worked extensively with (Southgate is not alone in this). The only CB who should be considered an undisputed starter is Stones and he's currently injured.

Sterling's omission is hardly surprising either. England are stacked in the wide areas so competition is fierce and Sterling's resurgence has been for all of three games after an extended period of being rubbish. Bowen's omission is more egregious than Sterling's.

Centre back isn't England's strongest position but, come on, Maguire both hasn't been playing and he's been terrible when he has had a rare chance to play. Basically any English centre back who's getting regular game time in the Premier League should be ahead of him at this point.

Colwill and Stones should probably be the longterm partnership, Guehi and Tomori are good options, White's been playing really well for a while (and is oddly on the outs for some reason), Dunk's big and slow but is actually in good form if Southgate really likes that sort of thing, Dan Burn too for that matter. Ezra Konsa might be worth a look. Even Joe Gomez has just had one good game which is more that Maguire has racked up over the last two seasons.

Group a should be Bayern and United to advance in some shape or form.

Group b looks a bit more challenging, but Arsenal should be favorite in that group. Then it's a bit more of open race for second

Group c Real and Napoli

Group d is anyone's guess. I'd back Inter, but that group looks super evenly matched

Group e Atletico +1 (I will cheer for Celtic obviously)

Group f PSG +1

Group g City and RedBull (in that order).

Group h Barca and Porto (could also see Shakthar making it to the k.o. stage over Porto)

Maguire has been a solid performer for England though. There's really no reason to drop him from the squad unless his performances for England go the way of his performances for United over the past couple of seasons.

Dortmund are a bit of bag of surprises this year, and they haven't enjoyed a particularly good Bundesliga start, and they are still in the market for new players. Füllkrug is reportedly close to signning for them. He would add some physical presence and and a goal scoring threat in their opponents box. Attributes that will probably be badly needed in January with Haller then being off to AFCON. Moukoko is different kinda player and lacks that physicality.

They are also still in the market for another CB, as they only have three valid CB options available atm (Schlotterbeck, Hummels, Süle). A loan deal for Bella-Kotchap was apparently their preferred solution to that.

Ideally they'd also like to add another wb/fb. But that's not a priority concern for them.

Bundesliga transfer updates.

Gravenberch to Liverpool as good as done deal (mentioned above)

Palinha to Bayern rumoredly in the final stages (~€ 65m fee)

Füllkrug to Dortmund official. (~€ 13m); Werder now need to find a replacement ASAP.

Gurev from Werder to Leeds (~ € 4m)

Deman (Cercle Brugge) to Werder

Berisha (Augsburg) to Hoffenheim is pretty much done.
