In that article, he touches on an issue that I think is central to the current situation the MCU finds itself in.

As he is listing potential leaders, he brings up Shang Chi and mentions that he was well received in a movie that did pretty good overall.  (I've already discussed my issues with the ending... but 3/4 of the movie was good and Simu Liu's performance was not one of the weaknesses.)  The author makes the point that we haven't seen him again and quips that it may be a decade before he gets a sequel.

In the run up to the first Avengers movie, we got two movies for Ironman and one each for the other super powered Avengers.  And that all happened in a 4 year span.

I think the MCU has sacrificed depth for width.  There's a lot of really shallow heroes that we have no connection to instead of building all over again with a narrow focus.  Post Endgame needed to be a bit of a reset, but starting from the new status quo.  But that obviously didn't happen.

The reason Iron Man was the first one to get a sequel is because that was the breakout film. We could have just an easily had a more Thor or Captain America or Hulk centric infinity saga had things gone another way. 

Post Infinity Saga, which one is the breakout film? Spider-Man? I don’t see him as anchoring things in that way.

And hey, didn’t Thor kind of retire at the end of the last movie? It seemed like it to me.

It'd be utterly fantastic (given the lacklustre characters currently populating the MCU) if the next Avengers movie opened in media res with Kangs wrecking the multiverse, and ended with most of the current characters killed, allowing the subsequent Avengers movie to introduce new characters who arrive in time to save the day and quickly wrap up this tedious Multiverse Saga. 

Wipe the slate clean and kickstart a new phase with more interesting characters (eg Fantastic Four, X-Men, Channing Tatum, etc.).

That Forbes article mentions everyone but Dr. Strange, which seems the most logical choice to me.

There was zero hype surrounding this movie; hence the record-low opening weekend. That's got very little to do with on-set production management. And quite a bit of that pandemic content was very well received IIRC. Though yeah, there was probably too much of it.

I can't recall even a single bit of above the line marketing for The Marvels outside of a few trailers.

I’m sure the movie really did need a firmer hand controlling it to stop it going off the rails. It really is a movie that feels like nobody was overseeing it. All the reshoots and delays suggests that Marvel was caught by surprise by the movie that was being made and they scrambled around to cobble something together that was somewhat coherent.
 

I agree that this isn’t the reason it underperformed however. There was no hype for it and audiences didn’t want to buy what Marvel were selling. There is so little interest in any of the 3 main characters and the movie seemed like some generic comic book guff that we’ve all seen a million times before. Plus why not wait a couple of months to watch it on D+.

The Marvels box office is flatlining. Domestically, it's $25 mil behind The Flash. It may struggle to cross $200 mil worldwide.

I wonder if the script for the Marvels was even finished, when filming started. James Gunn has mentioned this has been a big problem for MCU movies, where they start filming stuff, without a complete script and just finish their endings, while shooting their beginnings. I think I heard somewhere that Kevin Feige likes to fix things in editing. Gunn stated he plans to run DC the opposite way and refuses to start any shooting, until all of the scripts are completed and approved.
