Every year from the distant past to the foreseeable future has been filled with genre films and sequels. For net year, you are missing a few as well. Most notably Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Spiderman, and Thor 3

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and Thor 3 are actually clearly listed in my overview.

Agreed that years often look great in advance. But 2017 just looks especially packed.
I was prompted to post this because both Marvel and DC have superb looking films scheduled for 2017. I'm very interested in the Justice League film, and Thor and Guardians of the Galaxy are the Marvel films which I am most interested in seeing the sequels of, outside of Avengers.

On top of that, Ridley Scott confirmed that Prometheus II is indeed his next film and starts shooting start of 2016 for a 2017 release. Del Toro has been working for some time on Pacific Rim sequel and is confirmed for 2017. Then Star Wars VIII, possibly Avatar II, Kong: Skull Island, Transformers 5, possibly a Terminator film, Assassin's Creed.

The genres change though. Right now its superheroes and science fiction. There also seemed to be a young adult boomlet, but other than the Hunger Games most of those movies have failed to catch on, so it might be over. Eventually it will change again, and superhero movies will only be made as regularly as westerns are now.

Personally, I greatly look forward to that change. And my guess is that it will be towards more straight forward action movies, a la the Fast & Furious franchise.

Outside of documentaries what exactly would a non-genre film be? Could you supply some examples , this is a new area for me?

Animation, porn, and silent films. At least, that's the definition I once heard.

Myself, I tend to think of 'genre films' being movies that easily fit a single classification (e.g. Sci-Fi, Western, Superhero, Rom-Com, Legal Thriller, etc.) or there's one classification that dominates the others. So films that defy that categorization are non-genre. That doesn't necessarily make them better, although many of the best movies are hard to categorize into a single genre (e.g. Casablanca is a war film, a romance, and a thriller).

What a load of nonsense in this thread.

By genre films I obviously meant our genre, the one we come here every day to talk about.

Prometheus wasn't as great as we were hoping it to be but I still found it interesting, and it did have a few very memorable scenes. It ends in a way that definitely has viewers interested in more, and you can be sure it will be a film that draws a lot of curiosity all over the internet as we come closer to release.

The tagline for Prometheus 2 should be "can it possibly be worse than the first one?" Because really, that's the only reason anyone will watch that movie.

Prometheus was certainly not without its share of flaws, but it was far from the hyperbolic disaster you make it out to be. Yeah, it failed to to meet the sky high expectations that people, including myself, had for it - but it was far from unwatchable, imo.

Every time this us brought up, I feel the need to articulate that I really enjoyed Prometheus. I have watched that movie several times, and I just do not understand all of the hatred it gets. It was a better film than Alien 4. (and I even enjoyed Alien 4)

I think the major issues with Prometheus is that with such a blank slate, good actors, great visuals, good director, it shouldn't have been hard to have had a good movie. But the plot was deplorable. The holes in it were huge. Surely with all the good writers out there that should have been fixable before the movie even started.

And the thing was, the plots had lots to run off. The tension between the android's motives, the do-gooders and the daughter/father. The disparate goals and motives of the players. The mystery of what happened with the ancients. The tension of what the black goo meant and how it slowly impacted. There was a lot to work with.

It was still ok to watch, but when you're going "why on earth is X happening" and "nobody would do that, surely?" through it, it rather detracts.

If the flaws had been fixed, it wouldn't have been a Damon Lindelof screenplay :p Huge flaws are his trademark :p

The only thing I enjoyed while watching Prometheus was listening to my friend bitch about Prometheus stealing everything from Alien and his face when he realized it was actually a prequel.

To this day, I have no idea how he managed to skip that piece of information. :D

Revisiting this list nearly 6 months later.

Changes and additions:

Star Wars Episde 8 has been pushed back from May to December 2017.

Avatar II no longer set for 2017.

Pacific Rim sequel development has come to a halt and if it does come out, it wont be in 2017.

On the upside, a Dark Tower movie is also scheduled to come out sometime next year, probably late 2017 given that they only just starting filming.

Prometheus II is now called Alien Covenant and scheduled for October 2017

A Blade Runner sequel actually has a release date of January 2018, so following very shortly from this deluge of big movies late next year.

All the superhero films are still scheduled exactly as they were.

There is a Ghost in the Shell movie coming out in April 2017 starring Scarlett Johanson and Boardwalk Empire's Michael Pitt as the villain.

Finally, Guy Ritchie's King Arthur movie that was supposed to come out this Summer has been pushed back to March 2017. Was looking forward to that one.

This seems the appropriate place to post it. Pacific Rim 2 is back among the living projects. But in a near repeat of The Hobbit, it won't be Del Toro directing, but he will stay on as producer. Instead they got Steven S. DeKnight, which makes me cautiously optimistic, that, at least in won't be worse than the first one.
