NFL 2014: Preseason Edition

Do they? Seems more like the media wants to shove Manziel down our throats and therefore we have no choice but to watch him potentially fail. This is Tebow all over again. A back up QB dictates where the number 1 crew goes instead of the quality of the teams. That's the issue.

If its just the media why did the first preseason game between the Browns and the Lions draw huge ratings?

I understand the hate for the media driven circus, which it has been, but why else would so many people tune in to watch the Browns v Lions? I watched it, but I'm a huge Lions fan. If I wasn't there would be no way in hell I would have watched any of that game.

In the end the networks pick good games for the number 1 crew because more people will watch. Manziel will draw more people to watch, therefore, its smart on the networks part.

Bingo. ESPN and their like will keep cramming him down people's throats, and people will resent him for it. Some already do.

We can say it's manufactured hype... But the Browns first preseason game had more than double the ratings of the next closest game. Someone wanted to see him. :dunno:

When the primary sports outlet does nothing but talk a lot about a player it creates a lot of people who will tune in the hopes of watching him crash adn burn. Brilliant marketing by ESPN.

The speed was impressive, not really a boom though.

Eli 1-7 today. I was having fears about Giants new offensive schemes last week and they were confirmed(in my head) when I saw some articles with basically the same issues. Too many short passes? Not aggressive enough? Too focused on Eli's completion percentage? It's preseason and I'm already getting annoyed watching them, could be another long season.

But can that defense stop anybody? Seems to me the offense is about the same as last season. Their primary needs were on the defensive side of the ball.

But last season, injuries prevented that offense from showing its full potential. As for the defense, well that's the biggest question, as it has been the last few years. Still, if the offense remains relatively healthy, GB might just need an average defense to go deep into the playoffs.

Bears dumped Eric Weems and signed Santonio Holmes to be their #3. That's sad news for me. Not the Weems dump, as he was terribad in everything but his role as a gunner and even then he was getting at least one stupid penalty a game. No, it's sad because that means Marquess Wilson is going to be out longer than originally thought with this broken collarbone. That kid was looking Jeffery-esque through training camp.

Hopefully Holmes still has something left in the tank, though his being a free agent well into August doesn't particularly bode well.

I don't think it's all that stupid. They are looking at the ratings a pre season game drew just because of Manziel.

People want to watch Manziel. Either they want to watch him do something exciting or they want to watch him fail. Either way they will tune in to watch.

Incorrect. I have no interest whatsoever in watching that douche fail spectacularly.

I think more people will tune in to hate-watch Manziel than cheer for him. It's the same reason why Cowboys' games always get huge ratings.

Pretty much THIS. Honestly, I can't stand preseason. Any angle that may compel me to watch is welcome. Outside of wanting to know the depth chart progression of my favorite team, I couldn't care less about it.

So uh, yesterday was a painful preseason game for the Bengals. They lost their first, second, 6th and 7th picks this year to injuries plus two others. Ouch. On the plus side, Dalton carved up the Jets terrible secondary with some perfect 40 yard passes. Can't help but be impressed by the 1s so far despite the back ups playing terribly in each of the first two games.

Earlier access to injury information. Sometimes you get a glance at a new OC/DC's system/package formation.

But really it's just table bread.

Yeah, as far as following your team closely goes, you have to pay attention to it, but I find it to be such a tease. It's like trying to watch porn on a scrambled cable channel back in the day. The football junkie in me is more annoyed than satisfied. ya know? Bring on the real thing.

ETA: Oh yeah, and if you're playing Fantasy (particularly a money league) then it certainly pays to pay attention.

As a 49ers fan, I...if anyone has a really persuasive 'pre-season is meaningless' speech handy, I'd be ever so grateful.

So far this year, in all 3 phases of the game, we have accumulated more injuries than positive plays. Our kicker can't kick, our passers can't pass, our blockers can't block, our receivers can't receive and our runners can't run, our tacklers can't tackle and our coverage guys can't cover.

I am in no way exaggerating.

I know it's all about individual assignments at this point, but almost no one looks good individually. Even our much ballyhooed new stadium looks pretty mediocre.
