[TWOW Spoilers] Alayne I, v. 2

Recommended Posts

Right now, in light of this chapter, I'm wondering if Sweetrobin is not only going to beat the odds and live to grow up but eventually marry Sansa. That bit about her mentioning his hair (again) and then thinking that Sweetrobin's tentative future wife will admire his hair seems like overkill unless it is foreshadowing of some sort; unless there have been other ladies/girls of the Eyrie/Vale who have noticed the poor kid's pretty hair. And I remember Sansa's thoughts, during that ghastly wedding night with Tyrion, about Septa Mordane's telling her, in regards to wedding nights and naked bridegrooms, that every man has one attractive physical feature. But I'm certainly not betting on it, Sansa is still probably only 14 (and Robert Arryn is only what, 9 or 10?) and has a lot more growing up to do, and her situation, as well as that of the Vale and all of Westeros, too volatile at the moment to definitely forecast such predictions.

Interesting. I noticed the bit about Sansa admiring Sweetrobin's hair, since it seemed to be repeating the bit from AFFC. I was prepared to dismiss it on the basis of sloppy writing--since a lot of the writing in this chapter was very sloppy--but assuming it's intentional, there's something we're supposed to pick up on there. With that said, I don't know that Sweetrobin will live long enough to marry Alayne. He keeps being dosed with sweetsleep, and that stuff doesn't go away, according to Colemon; it accumulates in the system. On the other hand, he could beat the odds and survive the series, as you suggest. Even then, he might not necessarily marry Sansa, but he could prove a valuable ally. There's also Sansa's feelings to consider; she's contemptuous of Sweetrobin, thinking of him as a little fool, and sees nothing of value in him to love except his hair. That could change, I suppose, if Sweetrobin grows and matures, but it's unlikely. Sweetrobin if he lives could grow up to be decently attractive, as much as he repulses Sansa now. It sounds like Jon Arryn was a hottie in his youth, if Harry resembles him, and Lysa was quite pretty when she was younger. Even if Littlefinger is Sweetrobin's biological father, Littlefinger is also supposed to be reasonably good-looking, I thought.

One thing's for sure: Sweetrobin's possessiveness of Alayne, first suggested in AFFC, isn't going anywhere. Not only does he want Alayne to himself and insist that he loves her, he also claims that he can do as he likes since he's the Lord of the Eyrie. And then there's this bit:

[Harry] nodded, offered his arm, led her out onto the floor. As they waited for the music to resume, Alayne glanced at the dais, where Lord Robert sat staring at them. Please, she prayed, don’t let him start to twitch and shake.

Whether he lives or dies in the future, I think Sweetrobin's possessiveness towards Alayne, coupled with his dislike of Harry, is going to cause trouble.

The bald knight wore a dark blue surcoat emblazoned with a huge pair of pink lips.

House Lonmouth is a noble house from the Stormlands. They blazon their arms with quartered of six: red lips strewn on yellow, yellow skulls strewn on black.[1] According to semi-canon sources, their words are "The Choice Is Yours".[2]

The one on her right had a grizzled beard, a bald head, and a belly that spilled over his swordbelt where his lap should have been.

Ser Richard Lonmouth was a former squire and close personal friend of Prince Rhaegar Targaryen.[4] Lord Robert Baratheon outdrank a member of House Lonmouth, most likely Richard, at the Tourney at Harrenhal.[5]

He's got a big beer belly like Robert did from drinking so much, and nobody has heard from him since the rebellion, and they both have lips as their sigil. Ossifer Lips = Richard Lonmouth?

Can anyone tell me why would mladen be upset about this chapter?

I cant speak for that poster specifically, but generally i have noticed a lot of people are upset with this chapter because so many characters are acting out of character. Sansa, Mya Stone, Myranda Royce to name three.

Interesting. I believe there's a theory that Lem is Lonmouth. I can't recall though.

That's certainly one way to look at it, but Sansa dancing and Sweetrobin staring reminded me of the Tourney at Harrenhal as well.

Remember Howland Reed starring at Ashara Dayne as she danced with man after man?

Isn't it the same thing? A weak boy with mystical powers lusting after the hottie?

You mean Ned, right? Howland wasn't the one staring.

I know there are a few errors in the text on George's webpage, but I wonder what this means:

“Lady Myranda. Lady Alayne.” Anya Waynwood inclined her head to each of them in turn. “It is good of you to greet us. Allow me to present my grandson, Ser Roland Waynwood.” She nodded at the knight who had spoken. “And this is my youngest son, Ser Wallace Waynwood. And of course my ward, Ser Harrold Hardyng.”

He hadn't. Is there a line that was lost or is this sentence a mistake?

There's some parallels between Sansa & the Ashford Tourney. I wouldn't be surprised if fAegon & Co ended up here trying to gain support.

No, I mean Howland. This is the quote:

The crannogman saw a maid with laughing purple eyes dance with a white sword, a red snake, and the lord of griffins, and lastly with the quiet wolf... but only after the wild wolf spoke to her on behalf of a brother too shy to leave his bench.

So, Howland noted every guy Ashara danced with that night. Yeah, he was staring. :)

I still see a very thin chance of Harry being one of good old Bobby's bastards, why not?? bank on it folks...

A different gamble is guessing who Sansa will end up with...

Harry is arrogant, but Sansa has feelings for Sandor Clegane so... if we go by that angle, even Darkstar has a chance...

I would too, but for the blonde hair. Robert Baratheon is incapable of fathering a blonde-haired child, that's about as sure a thing in the series as anything. Unless it's dyed, like Aegon's.

1) Harry was a jerk to Sansa and I fekt bad for her, but I don't think it should be held against him given the setting and the fact that he was warned about LF by Yohn Royce.

2) SR's smarter than I thought. He seems to know what's going on.

3) Everything's going just as planned for LF so far.

I took it as George is saying that, after Roland's grandmother introduced him, he spoke ("Pleasure to meet you, Lady Alayne") and Alayne nodded. Since it was a trivial courtesy and would interrupt the actual introductions, the actual dialogue wasn't included.

I agree. He obviously changed his mind after seeing and interacting with her himself (just like they planned).

I'm less concerned about Harry being a jerk to Sansa than I am about him dismissively insulting Cissy for becoming "fat as a cow" after giving birth to his child. As I said on another thread, anyone who refers to the mother of his child as a fat cow, especially when said weight gain occurred as a result of birthing said child, is an asshole. Fuck that guy.

I remember one of Joffrey's first lines in the books had to do with whining about having to pay his respects to the Starks, since he couldn't abide the "wailing of women." Just saying.

Also, in GRRM's ASOIAF shorthand, when it comes to guys, good-looking + charming = worthless douchebag at best, sociopath at worst: Jaime, Marillion, Renly, Littlefinger, Gerris Drinkwater, Joffrey, Robert Baratheon (in his youth, anyway), Daario, etc. etc.

I have to laugh at Sansa getting all insulted at Harry calling her a bastard in front of everyone, when she always referred to Jon as her half-brother, which we learn in Jon's POVs bothered him, and one of her first lines in the books is airily dismissing Jon's feelings towards Joffrey as jealousy "because he's a bastard." Karma's a bitch, LOL.

1) Eh? I don't consider Renly and young Robert as worthless d bags. Certainly not young Robert, but to each his own.

2) Yes. I noticed that too. I still felt bad for her, but now she gets to see what it was like for Jon all those years.
