Football: The long goodbye. tic-toc goes the Klopp.

Bayern should sack Tuchel now and get in an interim until the end of the season (Hansi Flick maybe). Tuchel has the makings of another Mourinho or Conte which means that when things take a turn for the worse, he's more likely to pour fuel on the fire than turn things around. Might as well try for that new manager bounce while they still have a good chance in the league and CL than to allow the season to fizzle out under Tuchel who'd probably be sacked anyway at the end of the season.

They really shouldn't have fired Nagelsmann in the first place. (A lot of their problems were created by Salihamidzic).

But no, I don't think they should fire Tuchel (now). Leverkusen are in the driver's seat in the league, they could still do their late season implosion act. Cup they were eliminated embarassingly by Saarbrücken (the last remaining third tier team with the watery pitch issues).  CL may or may not be their best chance for a tropy this year (long shot given that City is in that competition). While the 0-1 is far from ideal, like I said, it didn'T break anything irreparable. They can overturn that at home. Tuchel has also a few arguments going for him. He has managed to get mostly good performances out of Upamecano (exception was last night), Pavlovic is looking like a player that could fix their DM issue. Tel is coming along nicely (expectations were high when he signed for quite bit of cash, but he was a candidate for loan before the start of the season). He has also provided game time to another young player, Krätzig, who is now seeing the season out on a loan deal in Austria. The squad has some weakness (lack of depth and in some cases proven quality on certain positons). Squad composition is something an interim couldn't fix either. They have added new players (Dier, Boey, Zaragoza) during the winter window, who they now need to integrate. Zaragoza was supposed to join them in the summer, but they worked to get him early as a reaction to Coman getting injured.

Where will he go? It's a real mystery.

Real Madrid? Who knows? Last time I was this curious about where a player will go was right before Haaland said he'd join City.

Shame Hodgson was taken ill AND is about to get binned. Seems a genuinely decent man.

He’s in hospital apparently so, yeah, pretty shit week for him. He seemed genuinely hurt by the fans getting on his case last week. It is a shame his time at Palace is going to end on this note.

It’s a shame for Hodgsom, I liked it when he came back and turned the team around.

Palace are a funny club, it felt like they had really gotten their recruitment sorted, they were bringing in the most exciting talent from the championship like Eze and Olise, and making a good side.

But last time I watched them they were still playing Jordan Ayew! In fact their whole side seems like the same one that’s been banging around for years.

Actually no, because they brought in Rob Holding.. oh.

Palace have had a real issue with renewing player contracts. They lost like 10 senior squad players on a free in 2021 and something similar happened last summer, including with Zaha who they'd been holding out for a big transfer fee on for like half a decade. Most of them weren't consistent starters by the time they left, but some of them were, and all of them needed to be replaced without having brought money in to do so.

So there's been a churn of squad players while there's no money for new stars.

It's not getting any better- there's a bunch out of contract this summer and while most of them aren't playing much, two of them are Hughes and Ward, both of whom play regularly.

ETA.

It's good to see they've switched from bitching about him leaving to seeing a silver lining.

Salah seems to be unaffected by his absence for AFCON and injury.

Robbo a bit lucky not to give a penalty there. Honestly, had ref awarded one I don't think we'd have a case to complain about it.
