NFL Week 10-11: Carson Palmer's Knee and Jay Cutler's Brain

Yeah, the intro to Ninja Gaiden is the most comparable example I can think of.

Oh yeah, I think you're right. But I wonder what the punter's revenge will be? Maybe next time (and, oh yes, there will be a next time) the punter's leg will be a few inches to the right and he'll, uh, make contact with at least one ball

I will say that it is really nice of the bears to be so considerate of those watching on the east coast. This game was over by 10! That's just really caring for your fellow man.

Allowed me to get a nap in before heading back to the casino for some poker. I'm grateful.

27-24 Niners over Saints is like a timeless score that sums up the universe. This game, if showed to space aliens, would give them a good idea of pretty much how things happened in America during the 20th and 21st centuries. It brought me back to 1992 and the beginning of my Saints journey. Just had a deja vu feel to it. Like there was a great sameness echoing through the decades. As Jim Nance would say, "The apple cider was not soft today, my friends, and the pizza grease couldn't wipe away the tears."

November 17, 2013.

November 17, 2013.

November 17, 2013.

That’s the last time the Raiders won a game.

I don’t think we need to dwell on it too much, but since 2002, the Raiders are the worst team in pro sports, right? Superbowl in 2002, then:

2003 4-12

2004 5-11

2005 4-12

2006 2-14

2007 4-12

2008 5-11

2009 5-11

2010 8-8 (wow)

2011 8-8 (on a roll)

2012 4-12

2013 4-12

2014 0-9

53-132 (avg of 4 wins a season); 286 win %. No playoffs since 2002, but also no winning seasons since 2002. Bill Callahan was the SB coach for the Raiders (Gruden having left in 2002). Here are the head coaches after that game

Callahan: Fired 2003

Norv Turner (sigh): Fired 2005

Art Shell: Fired 2006

Lane Kiffin: Fired 2008

Tom Cable: Punched an assistant coach in the face; Fired 2010,

Hue Jackson: Fired 2011

Dennis Allen: Fired 2014

Tony Sporano: Current

Okay, so they go through a coach about every two years. That’s terrible enough. BUT from, Bill Callahan (hired 2002) through Dennis Allen (fired 2014), with the SOLE exception of Norv Turner… NOT ONE of those guys ever was a head coach for any other pro football team other than the Raiders.

So… yeah… how… how ‘bout them Raiders?

Yeah, shocking, the Broncos somehow managed to beat them Sunday, 41-17. Way to make that happen, Peyton.

Had a bunch of close and closer-than-expected games. Chiefs were able to upend the Bills by 4; Detroit survived Miami by 4; Saints lost to the 49’ers by 4.

Just on the Saints- sorry, NO fans, that was PI. He pushed the DB and he wasn’t being coy about it. HE had his hands on him, he pushed and yea the DB did some acting, but it was PI. Every time. And don’t give me this shot that “Well, it’s a Hail Marry- LET THEM PLAY!” Just find me in the rule books where it describes pass interference and then says “These rules shall not apply on the last play of the game.” Jesus, that’s when that rule should be allied THE MOST! It’s when people cheat! Their “Reward” (winning the game) is far too great if there is no “risk” (A penalty). It was PI. Get over it.

And in 3 weeks when Gronk does it to a Packer, its clearly the ref’s fault. Don’t forget that.

-What the fuck Chicago? No, really! Gave up 55 points? Fuck sakes, we had a Jimmy Clausen sighting AND a Matt Flynn sighting. Rodgers only had a QB rating of 145.8 and 6TDs. What? He didn’t stick the landing? Obviously, the season is over for Chicago, but what the fuck do you do? After you let Lovie Smith go to die in Tampa Bay, you have to fire Trestman, right? He’s terrible! He lost the locker room and he has to still be in the same building as Jay Cutler. Cutler had 1 TD and 2 picks, a fumble, and a QB rating about half of Rodgers, which is fucking terrible because I think he played about 25% as well as Rodgers. Great job.

-And then the Steelers lost to the Jets. Fuck you. No, really. Fuck the Steelers. After throwing 12 TDs in 2 weeks, Ben Fat Head threw 1 TD and 2 picks and the Steelers defense (if you can call it that) gave up 20 points to Michael Vick. Gino Smith had his best game of the season sitting on the sidelines with a clipboard. Great coaching there, Rex.

-Bad news in the NFL was that after a week of “redemption” stories for Carson Palmer, he probably has a torn ACL and will be done for the season. Frankly, I don’t think it will upset the Cards that much; Stanton can do many of the same things Palmer could; while Stanton was the QB, the Cards only lost to the Broncos, not THAT unusual.

Now, the Pats will go into Indy and it will be a well-rested Pats team v. a well-rested Colts team and while I like the Pats’ chances, Luck is as good as any QB in the NFL right now. Yeah, the Colts D is shaky, but they can do a lot of things to frustrate passing attacks. Still think the Pats will win 31-27, but its gonna be close.

Wish the Pats could play the Raiders again.

So in that final week as playoff seeding is set into stone I will think of you as the Broncos get their free final win. Though the Pats have Orton that week, so i don't think it will matter at the point.

Poor Marcus Mariota, going to be banished to Oakland.

Derek Carr is not playing badly at all. His stats are the best of any of the rookie quarterbacks this year - 61% completion rate, 13 tds, 9 ints. Not amazing, but considering he's playing in Oakland that is pretty incredible. I wonder if the Raiders could get a kings ransom from like the Bucs or Jets or Texans to trade down?

Marcus Mariota is the best QB prospect since Andrew Luck. Are you really passing up on him because Derek Carr has been okay?

I don't think Mariota is the best prospect since luck. Or if he is that's more condemning of the classes before him. Winston may be a better fit for some teams too.

That being said, if you think he's a franchise qb you pull the trigger regardless. Having two good qbs is super valuable too. How much did the bears give up to get one? How much did the redskins give up? If Mariota is the real deal having him and Carr is probably okay.

Though the raiders need so much talent everywhere. Oy.

I mean, he might be, but that doesn't say much considering Luck came out a few years ago. Mariota is a good QB, but running QBs are notoriously hard to evaluate due to his very limited pocket presence. He's good, but he's more a slightly better CK than a Luck.

Since Luck? You mean better than any prospect in 2013 and 2014? Yeah, that's possible, but not as big a compliment as you seem to think it is, both those drafts were very weak at quarterback. If you mean a better prospect than RG3, then you're just deluding yourself.

And the Raiders have so many needs that it is hard to believe that they are going to give up on one of the only young prospects they still have, just so they can start all over with a new, more promising quarterback. The Raiders lack starting level players at like ten different positions, anything that can fill those holes is priority 1.

I agree with you that it's more condemning of the classes before him, but he's the first guy that looks like a potential franchise quarterback to come out since Luck. I think Winston may be a slightly better prospect on the field, although it's close, but the off the field stuff makes it basically impossible to pull the trigger on him at #1 overall, IMO.

I also think the fact that this doesn't appear to be a great draft at the top. It's not like you could pass on the quarterbacks to get Jadaveon Clowney or Sammy Watkins in this draft.
