So the end of this season has basically made several characters irrelevant at this point:

  • Brienne
  • Mel
  • Davos
  • Jorah

I'm sure I'm missing some. What is to become of them? They should have had Cersei's GPS guided wildfire take them out just so they don't need to be written into weak plots.

I bet Arya kills Mel.

Yeah, Dany’s going to be like, “Damn, I have all these armies, allies, and dragons, and Cersei’s got like ten guys to do battle with, three of who are in wheelchairs and another two who are on oxygen tanks. I should have brought Daario with me.”

Yeah, I mean, Dany has no real opposition in Westeros. Her 3 dragons alone could take out the entire fleet Euron is preparing in a few days or less, everyone else is with her except for the Lannisters and their, well, I admit it, their clone factory capable of manufacturing well dressed( budget consuming) Lannister soldiers at a faster rate than the conquering Night King Army but still, those 3 dragons alone can bring armies to submission. The Dothraki will wreak havoc. She could marry the Imp and no one is going to care enough to do anything about it. She has this one in the bag.

Excellent post, and true.  People should think long and hard about how GRRM tells his story and, in particular, Theon's masterful ADWD arc before they tell us D&D "only did what GRRM did" - they really haven't.  They didn't get what GRRM said - they don't have that kind of sensibility, that I can see.  Theon's torture porn in the show was a disgrace.

Nasty Arya and Cersei parallel:

Cersei: I said my face would be the last thing you saw before you died.

Arya: The last thing you're ever going to see is a Stark smiling down at you as you die.

Like, big difference between the two characters. But let's pretend there's not.

What a great episode! My favourite part was the following exchange,

Sansa: You see that smug man glowering in the corner? He sold me to the Bolton's like chattel. He murdered my aunt Lysa. He betrayed my father. He's the reason Ned Stark was killed!

Littlefinger: Oh shit. I thought you forgot all that stuff I did.

I mean if they had done anything else, like having Sansa resent and scheme against Jon, that would've been crazy. I don't think I would've been able to accept it at all.

Probably because the director and actress have a different perspective.  Again with D&D contradicting themselves.

Cool, and totally to be expected at this point. What were their different takes on it?

ETA: different or is it even better, as in diametrically the opposite?

Oh they haven't said anything yet.  But I'm just guessing when they filmed it, no where on-set was there supposed to be any hint that Sansa was to communicate jealousy.  I'd bet my bottom dollar.

I also thought we should have gotten a little Bond villain monologue from Arya to recount Freys crimes and maybe she should have told him she's executing him or something, it was awfully qucik.

LF framed Sansa for regicide. She KNOWS this. This is no small thing. Why not tell them that? He killed the king. That might mess things up for him and the Lannisters a wee bit.

(Pimping her out to the Boltons is bad enough, but that makes him the Mad Queen in Kings Landing's target. We have to qualify which Mad Queen we are talking about now...)

Yep. And she'll likely marry Man Bun, so that should solidify the north. So really, the only opposition is Carol Queen Tapistry.

I honestly am tired of all the people who are alive (or killed) by sheer plot convenience.  We had an entire battle on the Blackwater where all the characters wanted to keep Stannis out because they were afraid he'd kill them for what they did.  Here's Jon, surrounded by 2 people he has no reason not to execute (Melissandre and Littlefinger) and he doesn't because of reasons.  It's contrived and ridiculous.

Well, Carol is now Sheryl The Black and she has a Lannister soldier clone device that seems to pump out lion helm soldiers on demand.

Yes, and there with them is Lord Royce, the military leader of the Vale troops and with Sweet Robin back in the Vale, where he cannot be influenced by LF. LF still being alive is a bit nonsense.

Also, regarding Sansa's look at the end. She seemed happy for Jon and the situation but is frightened by LF and realizing what he is capable of. All the more reason to kill him off ASAP.

Oo, and another thing (!!):

Do the D&D understand how childbirth works - where babies come from?  Lyanna's clothes and bedding look as if Alien had ripped out of her stomach.  Are they implying it was a botched Caesarean  - with her clothes on?  I mean - just what was that about?

I'd have to single that out as the worst scene in the series.  I could understand a heartless Ironborn warrior telling Theon to act like a man or else kill himself, but it's dreadful to portray that as being something that Theon needed to hear, and as playing a part in his recovery.

My wife worked, in the 1980s, for a charity that helped victims of torture in South America.  Typically, torture victims (like victims of sexual abuse) suffer panic attacks, nightmares, depression, and intense feelings of shame and self-loathing.  It would beggar belief that anyone working with such people would tell them to pull themselves together or else commit suicide.

I don't buy Jon not having Mel executed. The only exception I could see is if he was being ruthlessly pragmatic due to the apocalyptic threat presented by the zombies, and felt she would be too useful to lose. But he exiles her instead so it can't be that.

I'm quite sure Davos would've taken things into his own hands as well, but he inexplicably worships Jon ever since he died.

Am I the only one annoyed by the Lyanna Mormont character.  Yes, yes, she's interesting enough, and the child actress is above and beyond her years, but for god's sake she's the anti-Ollie...she's such a flaming Mary Sue.

She was ok and funny back in the scene on Bear Island. She did give us"Sandra", but after that, and especially at Winterfell, they overused her way too much.

Again, the northern houses listen to anyone other than who they say is their king. First Davos, now little Mormont.
