karaddin
Honestly the biggest thing to jump out to me after watching that clip again is that @IlyaP is spot on and she's really lacking in media coaching to be at the point of making a speech like that. She's lacking in confidence and vocal projection and that's whats being misinterpreted as somehow negative even though that same issue is present in everything else she's saying. She does much better when interacting with others rather than just delivering a speech on her own.

She does much better when interacting with others rather than just delivering a speech on her own. I mean she’s an actress, vocal projection and faking confidence is literally part of her job. I’d disagree with saying she’s much better interacting with other too, there are far too many clips of her really not understanding banter and not gelling with people to make me think that. None of this would be an issue but it goes back to my original point, she isn’t suited to the MCU. She was good in Room, I really liked her in that. It suited her personality and manner. The MCU is basically a bunch of Robert Downey Junior clones in different costumes. To make that work you need to be able to do snappy one liners and have charm and a sense of self depreciation. She doesn’t have any of those unfortunately, she appears far too fragile and unable to laugh at herself. Maybe that is a lack of confidence but it doesn’t fit the MCU. She is hardly the only example but she’s a big one.
IlyaP
I had classes on this in university, so I feel comfortable pointing out stuff like this and addressing it. There are signs and clues that one can point to if they're educated on the topic, to explain what's happening on screen, from body language to tone, to visual/audience engagement, etc. Also worth adding, per her own admission on why so few projects have been on her plate - it's of her own choosing. It's all covered quite thoroughly in a Harper's Bazaar interview. (As someone who has, in the past, taken a career break after burning out after being in a very intense job in the financial services sector, this resonated a lot with me.) Acting in front of cameras is VERY different to acting on a stage is again VERY different to giving a speech at a podium. They require extremely different skillsets, and not everyone who's great at acting is great at public speaking is great at theater performances, etc. And for every instance of her not jelling with people, there's insanely cute moments where she does, and it made fans squee with joy. Kinda feels like everyone is asking so much from her, to be everything to everyone, and holding her to a higher bar than is necessary. She's made some cool movies that some of us enjoyed, and some of us didn't. Hell, there are people who, somehow, enjoyed Thor 2, which...I just...don't get. But I don't berate them about it, or knock Natalie Portman, despite having always found her acting to be extremely wooden.
mormont
I'm just going to repeat: I'm a 51 year old white cishet male and if Marvel had sat me down and asked me 'what if we made a film specifically for you? what would that look like?' my answer would have been 'Monica Rambeau, Carol Danvers and Kamala Khan teaming up, please'. Maybe adding Blue Marvel, who yet might appear. I'll be lining up to see it, and as we discussed earlier in the thread, so will a lot of folks in my demographic. What the lead actress - and she is undoubtedly the lead actress, she will in this movie have her name precede the credits, something that only Robert Downey Jr and a handful of others have had in Marvel movies - said years ago about another film is not in my mind at all. If you're trying to make an issue of it at this point, you need to have a talk with yourself. lacuna
Re: The clip from Brie Larson's speech posted earlier Whoever edited together this clip decided to add in a jarringly loud static noise between cuts. It couldn't be that the creator wanted to implant annoyance and aggravation in the viewer, could it? Come on. At least recognize that someone* is chumming the water here. *ETA: By which I mean a certain subset on the internet. That doesn’t mean she is a bad actress, but she simply doesn’t have the skill set to lead a movie of that type , let alone an entire franchise. There are very few people who do have that skill set. As a cisbi slavic white male, who's only a few years behind you at 42, I'm pretty much of the same mind. Like, a bunch of cute women bantering and having fun making a big silly SF romper of a movie? Sign me up! And let me just have this moment of EXTREME JOY: none other than f*cking Laura Karpman has been hired to be the composer, who is famous in my world for her work composing the music of EverQuest II. (Fun trivia fact, her wife is also a composer!)

And I'm not bothered by it. Like I said - she reminds me of my partner, whom I adore to bits and bits, and has the kind of wry, dry humour and sensibility that I find appealing. I can respect that's not going to work for or be everyone's cup of tea. Like, I still find Scarlett Johansson to be a bizarre casting choice for Black Widow. As well as absolutely everyone in the Black Widow movie (a movie I actively did not like even a little bit). But if her style of acting works for others and they buy the bit and buy the whole of her as Black Widow? Hats off to 'em. You like what you like. De gustibus non est disputandum. See now you lost me. Scarlett isn't perfect but she manages to grapple with the MCU style far better than Brie. She is able to do the snarky comments without coming across as bitter, she is able to laugh at herself, to not take herself seriously, and she managed to have chemistry with basically everyone she interacted with in all her movies. She would be an example of what Brie should be aiming to do. Ser Rodrigo Belmonte II
karaddin
I think lacuna is assuming that one was edited with the static to try antagonize the haters even more? I don't actually know the youtuber in question, I took it to be the opposite - pointing out that her actual words are a nothingburger, in which case the annoying static edits would just be the style of that youtuber. Chum in the water is just bait btw. IlyaP
