Enrichment top-tip.

Ideally on a grassed area.

Take a handful of kibble

Throw it in the air

Sit back and watch

The pups were enjoying that, very cute. I have to try it  w/ the evil hobbits but I doubt they’d be that well-behaved.

We had another along later who was, erm... a touch possessive.

Couldn't have played that game with him.

Oh ours are not possessive at all, they share everything. But they’re hyperactive, unruly, bonkers! :D At least the young ones…

I love the name Nimue btw.

In that case, they'll be fine. Especially if you do play-dates like ours (I think we ended up with 10 dogs for most of it)

Our own pack is almost as large as the one you had today! They’re very good w/ socialising w/ other dogs but sometimes the lone dog gets a bit anxious b/c they’re very boisterous and full of beans so I suppose it can feel a bit intimidating at first. :)

Extinct woolly dog was carefully bred for weaving, ancient DNA confirms

https://www.washingtonpost.com/science/2023/12/14/woolly-dog-dna-coast-salish/

Quote

.... Woolly dogs split from other dogs in North America somewhere between 1,900 and 4,800 years ago, the data show. Mutton had only 16 percent ancestry from European dogs — a tiny contribution that, to researchers who study ancient dog DNA, signifies the care with which they were raised even decades after European settlers arrived.

“It’s not just a dog — it’s a relative. It has enormous spiritual power, conveyed in its wool,” Pavel said. “Imagine being able to receive the gift of wool fiber, being able to learn to weave that into yarn, into an entity, or a blanket or robe that you could wrap yourself in the coldest of winter, and feel the warmth of those prayers. That’s how we look at it, and we can now enjoy a scientific view, as well.”

The DNA evidence, combined with the oral history from Coast Salish elders, also makes it clear that the prevailing explanation for the decline of dog-wool weaving fails to grapple with the dark role of colonialism. The commonly offered explanation is that machine-woven blankets were more convenient and replaced ones made by hand. But the study authors note that the people who cared for woolly dogs were decimated by diseases brought by colonizers, and Coast Salish elders shared stories of active efforts to extinguish cultural identity and authority among the survivors.

“They were told they couldn’t do their cultural things. There was the police, the Indian agent and the priests. The dogs were not allowed,” Rena Point Bolton, a 95-year-old elder from the Stó꞉lō Nation, told the researchers in an interview. The traditional tools that weavers used to turn wool into yarn, shxwqáqelets, were also not allowed.

A full-body reconstruction of Mutton shows how the woolly dog would have stood alongside some of the Arctic dogs and spitz breed ....

Spending the next few hours digging a grave for my Laci.

I’m sorry she had such a shit early life. And I wish I could have saved her sooner.

She was a good dog.

I really miss Prince William. He was the last source of light and warmth in this house that made it feel like Christmas.

well, the Chancellor is trying. He stole the salmon roast from the pantry in the afternoon to try and give us some Christmas memories. Chubbs is already sleeping. She came over for some head rubs, then I stuck my phone in her face, they all hate photos and phones, so she eventually left me. I’ll go to bed too.

Today is the two year anniversary of Prince William’s death. My last photo of him is time stamped at 12:03pm after which the anesthetic kicked in and the vet sent us out to give him the injection to stop his heart. I date his death at 31st Jan, 12:05pm. I hope he’s resting in peace.

That's the 7TB hard-drive, with all our films, photos, music, files etc on it - she's ripped out the power cable from the wall, and the USB cable from the TV - both of which are destroyed (hopefully she hasn't destroyed the USB input).

One of the dumbbell weights is destroyed as well.

4th dog, 10th if you include childhood. I've never known one this destructive. Every single time they're left alone in the house, something is destroyed, however hard we try to protect stuff.

I refuse to crate her, especially with Beli's past. Any other suggestions?

More exercise is the simplest first order possible solution.  A tired dog is a good dog.  Some dogs need 3+ mile walks every day.  I'm glad you are refusing to crate the dog when no one is home.  Good luck.

She's 7 months old, so we're limited in the exercise she can have, for fear of her joint development.

She did have a play date for about 45 minutes, about an hour before being left. Was fast asleep when I locked the door (ETA: actually, I assume my leaving woke her up)

Also still doing mental stimulation and training sessions most days (I'd love to say every day, but... it'd be a lie these days)
