GRRM on Season 3

Westeros

Recommended Posts

Saw an item today that said in GB there had been a drop in UK something like from 500,000 E1 to 400,000 for E3.

Just wondering if E1 and E2 caused the drop?

Wonder what the buzz about E3 will do next week?

I have never figured out Sky Atlantic's accessibility. Had the impression the books and series was popular in the UK.

As for the rest of the world ... still a mystery to me... we got that report of big interest in Germany even with the very late release.

World wide sales of S1 on DVD remain unknown.

I speculate on this because it is a costly show, but HBO seems to in the black on it, but will greenlight only one season at a time.

I don't know what it would take to make them open up to a S4 & S5 deal?

We book readers are already being tortured by what seems a dozen narrative arcs that seem to be going towards a big Götterdämmerung, unlike ROME , which could have gone on , tho the best part of that story picks up nearly 30 years after the shows' end. DEADWOOD could have gone forward but seemed the story was really over by the end of season 2.

GOT would leave so many loose ends some people may go mad!

It sure would be a record for such an elaborate and expensive TV offering to make it to the end....

which I can only speculate would be about five more seasons at the minimum.

It all really depends on what kind of revenues HBO can make.

Can't speak to UK ratings, but it is killing it here in the U.S. week-in-and-week-out. Episode 3 even added nearly 1 million viewers for the replay.

That's good to know ... I never can seem find that kind of info out.

Hmm... well... does Sky Atlantic do replays of the episodes?

(I should qualify the Sky Atlantic remark, apparently even with a drop, their share is apparently very good.)

Exact #'s can take days to pull-in. The premiere hit 3.9 million viewers; week 2 (a holiday) drew 3.8 million (a 97% retention week-to-week). Week 3 held steady, give or take, with 3.766 million, which seems -- at first glance -- to be slight loss, but week 2 actually only got 3.759 million for the first showing. The rest came later. Just off the 11pm encore showing alone for week 3, they pulled-in another 776,000 viewers. It's soundly trouncing Mad Men and everything else thus far.

Do you know if that is just USA numbers or is Canada included too?

It seems impossible to find out what , say, the European viewership is, IMDB has a release date page, it list a lot of countries but zero info about when or what is going on. Had heard that there was general release in Eastern Europe not long after USA release, but that's about it. Western Europe seems even more mysterious. As I have noted HBO has a better biz model for non US release, but there is no Box Office Mojo for TV , that I know of.

It's been since March for the release of S1 on DVD , only figures I have ever seen is that , I think, first day 350,000 figure (for the US) in the more than month since must be a better cumulative number, again world wide.

General European figures are indeed hard to get. UK figures, not so much. While the UK same-day viewership is down from last season's finale, the live+7 viewership is pretty steady at 1.4-1.5 million viewers.

WyvernWood on Twitter has been spitting out tables for UK results. Compare to his table for True Blood and Boardwalk Empire, and we see that Game of Thrones is actually a smashing success compared to those shows.

What we're seeing is that while the same-night numbers may have declined, it just means more people are time-shifting or streaming. In fact, in the run-up to the premiere, Sky Atlantic was heavily promoting their Sky Anywhere streaming service.

I see.

There is a typo in column 2 for Season 2, either that or a time traveler in the haystack.

I have never figured out Sky Atlantic's accessibility. Had the impression the books and series was popular in the UK.

They were popular in the UK, but before the TV series no moreso than a lot of other fantasy series (and not as popular as say Pratchett or Jordan). They've only become massive sellers since the TV series started. Most of the books can now be found in supermarkets, which is the clearest sign of being a major cross-over success.

As for Sky, there are roughly 10 million households in the UK with access to it (out of approximately 25 million households in total and a population of between 61 and 62 million). Which sounds encouraging, but Sky Atlantic is not available on the base Sky package (there have been times when it has been as part of a free offer, including for all of Season 1), so only a proportion of Sky customers have access to it. In addition, the overwhelming majority of the 10 million subscribers to Sky seem to have it for sports or movies. Only a small number watch the general entertainment channels.

Lost, for example, used to get viewing figures on Sky One (the main, free-to-all-subscribers entertainment channel) of around 300,000-400,000, rising to 600,000 for the much-trailed finale. BSG was kept on a primetime slot on Sky One for the duration of its run despite only getting average figures of around 150,000 (300,000 at best). Considering that Game of Thrones is on a channel that not all Sky customers have access to, figures of 500,000-700,000 for the first showing andw well over 1 million in total are spectacularly good. I know that Sky are very happy about how well it's doing.

I've been watching the series after the fact, so I don't know for sure, but I'm told that Sky have also dropped their 'just one advert break' rule for Season 2 (which they had for S1) in favour of 3 or 4 breaks per hour. That will piss a lot of people off, and lead to a substantial increase in timeshifting.

Yeah if they did that here in the US I would be pissed off!

(Lord I hope HBO never starts with commercials,I would pay even more for premium service not to have it!)

(Gezz, the general cable biz here is one I wish I had a piece of, just think we smucks pay some provider for the service, then the advertisers pay the provider to show commercials, then we Yahoos pay to watch commercials, a sweet con!)

Anyway what about DVD sales in the UK? Never hear about how S1 sales did there?

GoT was the #2-selling Blu-Ray and DVD in the week of release. The culture of DVD-buying in the UK is that people buy a lot of cheap deals from the supermarkets or HMV, particularly as major new DVD releases are initially discounted to £10 and then rise later on. So GoT, which is very expensive compared to most DVD releases (not too bad on Blu-Ray, though, which has a lot more static pricing in the UK), doing so well is impressive. Checking in Tescos (our biggest retailer) yesterday, it still seems to be around number 10 in the DVD chart six weeks after release, which is again impressive for a TV boxed set, and around #5 in the Blu-Ray chart (the UK is still somewhat Blu-Ray-sceptical; it's taking off, but way, way more slowly than DVD ever did). GoT actually appears to be being used by some sellers and magazines as a way of getting people to upgrade to Blu-Ray (the same way the LotR DVD Extended Cuts were used by some to convince the last VHS hold-outs to switch to DVD) given the numerous extra features and of course the superior image quality.

The increase in breaks is annoying but it is in direct response to the shorter episodes this season so I don't think we can really blame Sky for this change of policy.

Sorry this is off topic but the lengths of each episode are quite telling I think and its really surprising how variable they are.

Episode 1 = 63 mins

Episode 2 = 56 mins

Episode 3 = 57 mins

Episode 4 = 56 mins

Episode 5 = 55 mins

Episode 6 = 53 mins

Episode 7 = 56 mins

Episode 8 = 59 mins

Episode 9 = 57 mins

Episode 10 = 53 mins

Season one total length = 565 minutes

If we look at season two so far:

Episode 1 = 53 mins

Episode 2 = 51 mins

Episode 3 = 53 mins

So the longest episodes this year are only as long as the shortest episodes from last year.

I sincerely hope we get some longer episodes at some point this season. Perhaps they are saving up those extra minutes for one extra long episode. Is it too much to hope for a 90 minute Blackwater? Yeah it probably is.

If we do get an episode closer to 60 minutes this year then it will be interesting to see if Sky schedule less advert breaks in that one or if the following programmes get moved back accordingly. The programme schedulers must really hate HBO shows that don't stick to a standard length from week to week.

WoW! I have never seen those numbers.

I was just going along dumb as brick thinking each episode was exactly the same length!

I guess this includes , or does it, the opening and closing credits?

Actually HBO really does not have to conform to the same time constraints as prime time TV... seems some series I have watched have spilled over the canonical hour mark.

Would not mind if they loosened up for GOT, sometimes I check , read time the episode running time (easy to do with U-verse) and think to my self, damn!, how are they going to elaborate all that's got to happen in the next 10 min. ?

Sometimes it's kind of thin.

Very true but it should be noted that D&D warned HBO that if it works that its 7-8 season show atleast, which is great news. Lets just hope that they can keep up with this type of viewership and we might very well get our complete Song of Ice and Fire.

§ The footsteps Bran hears are Sam and Gilly, who tell them of how they got there, describing Coldhands to them. Sam speaks of the spells woven into the wall, which then leads to a conversation about the link they have between each other, Jon. Samwell promises not to tell anyone of Bran's whereabouts on his own honour.

§ Jon has Ygritte in his sights, he tries not to fire an arrow towards her

§ Arstan Whitebeard reveals himself as Barristan, and pledges his sword to her name. Jorah warns her not to accept him as he had gone to Robert the Usurper's side after the Battle of the Trident, Barristan retorts, telling Daenerys of Jorah spying for Varys all this time, Jorah begs for her to keep him, telling her he was loyal since the birth of her dragons. Daenerys dismisses both of them.

§ Ending on a montage of the last few scenes of the siege at the wall, after Donal Noyle drops the powder keg, of the Magnar and the rest of his men perishing, and Ygritte dying in Jon's arms. This mixed with Bran arriving at the Black Gate, and a tear falling onto Bran with Samwell speaking the oath of the Night's Watch to let them in through the weirwood.

Sorry about the length!! Went off on one, that's the best I could do to predict the events of season 3

Nice list! One quibble: there's no way they're going to wait until Episode 3 to show something from the Fist. These episodes are going to be packed. Also I think the RW will be in Episode 8.

I believe we have had some indication that Hoster Tully is already dead and the funeral will happen very early on, possibly Episode 1.

I think we're going to see Balon's death on-screen.

I think a lot of what you put down is unfortunately going to be cut. I just don't see how they can do all of those things unless the episodes get 20 minutes longer.

Haha i know what you mean, there isn't a lot of point of having hoster tully alive, as they need a reason to go to riverrun. You're right

Yeah maybe what i put for the end of episode 3 will happen at the end of episode 1, and episode 3 would end with arya's identity revealed.

Haha well they managed to pack a hell of a lot into the past 2 seasons! I believe they probably could fit all that into about 55 minutes or so.

Hmmm balon's death being on screen does seem to be the sort of thing they would do, having done the scene with melisandre in the cave in season 2 and such
