Fragile Bird
Saturday meant getting the the snow tires installed. And new front brakes too, which my mechanic saw I needed once the tires were off. And I still have gardening clean-up to finish, because it rained all week last week. Realizing the calendar has flipped to November always hits home for me.And I got my name for Secret Santa. :)So, for those of you in the northern hemisphere, my question is, Are you ready? And for those of you who aren't getting winter except on the calendar, razz us a bit, but not too much . . . . yes, I know what the temperature is in San Diego. ;)
Whitestripe
I had the kids try on their snow pants to see if they still fit yesterday. I haven't decided if I want to get snow tires or not. I haven't yet but I may this year. I've only had the car two winters.Oh and I lit the pellet stove this weekend. It will probably be on all winter. Zoë Sumra
Don't mention winter: I'm still struggling with autumn. We've never before had a garden, or therefore a tree, or therefore a rake, or therefore an extra wheelie bin for food-and-garden waste that cannot eat all the leaves... Eyron
All set! The tires were changed a few days ago. And a two radiators were fixed since we were getting a bit cold. Otherwise we were pretty much ready since last winter.

Just a light dusting.yeah, we're looking at a storm storm this week - though the temp might stay high enough that it is rain and not snow. Really hoping for the folks in NY/NJ still without power that we "only" get rain.
rocksniffer
Even in the South (Carolina) we have to get ready for winter...black loafers for shagging (dancing, that is) on the beach instead of summer white or autumn tan B)

Prince of the North
I live in North Dakota and, like Greywolf said, I'm always ready for winter. All of our vehicles have at least newer all-season tires on them. Also, the snowblower is ready for lighter snow removal while the tractor is ready to go for more heavy duty snow removal. I do still have to get up some snow fence around my place but that will happen this week. We've been having really nice weather so far this Fall. Just a few light dustings of snow and, since the daytime temps are still getting above freezing, none of it is sticking around for long. Also, my wife and I have been getting back into homebrewing lately and we're making three or four different kinds of beer to have on hand for the holidays this year. I also tried my hand at making some apple pie liqeuer this year. It's pretty simple and turned out well. Warming some of that up on the stove, etc. will make a pleasant seasonal drink when coming in from outside during the holidays ;)

Prince of the North
Send winter my way it's still too flipping warm here. You know, I actually enjoy winter quite a bit. But there were a couple of winters a few years ago during which I would have liked to send some of the weather elsewhere. The sheer volume of snow and subsequent drifting were just too much. Those winters are the reason I now own a tractor with a front-end loader! Last winter in North Dakota was normal to mild. I'm hoping this year is the same. That way i can still get the enjoyment from it without an incredible amount of inconvenience. I'm also somewhat curious what effect winter will have in the oil patch of western ND? A lot of people have come there for the job opportunities, which is great, but they may not be very experienced with winter weather. Of course, there is still a tremendous shortage of good housing available so people may endup trying to struggle through in RV's and such which could be bad. Or was it just Minot that kept getting bad luck with weather and floods and such?

Fragile Bird
2 cm of ice on the nearest lake a couple of days ago. Ice skates newly sharpened. I am ready. Please - not on 2 cm! You need 10 cm to be safe. All of our vehicles have at least newer all-season tires on them. I used to use all seasons, but I find them inadequate, so I switched to 4 snows. The difference is remarkable. I also tried my hand at making some apple pie liqeuer this year. It's pretty simple and turned out well. Warming some of that up on the stove, etc. will make a pleasant seasonal drink when coming in from outside during the holidays ;)Oh, that sounds delicious! Can we have the recipe, please? Opisthokont
Please - not on 2 cm! You need 10 cm to be safe.I'm not about to get out on 2 cm thick ice, though 10 cm is a bit too cautious in my opinion. 5 - 6 cm is plenty on a known lake. When it's 10+ I don't even bother to bring an ice prod. But I'm ready.

Whitestripe
I've got the ice skates all in a pile by the door. Need to go get them sharpened. The rink on campus is open and the kids want to go! They like to laugh when Mom and Dad fall on their arses.
