Now reading A Stark and Wormy Knight by Tad Williams. Unfortnately I've read most of the stories in other anthologies already. Still listening to Pillars of the Earth, almost 4/5 through. Eponine Posted October 8, 2013 Share Posted October 8, 2013 Retreading some New Weird, starting with Vandermeer. There were a lot of things from Ambergris that I'd forgotten from the first read. I think Dradin, In Love is an almost perfect story, undiminished by a second reading - knowing the ending doesn't ruin it because the build up of atmosphere and feeling is as important as plot, but knowing some background enhances it. In the other stories and books, sometimes it feels like Vandermeer takes his abilities for style imitation and send-up a little too far, but the grey caps are an incredible invention. It is the second book of a truly wonderful duology and even if it wasn't quite as good as the first one, it was still very very good. Very well rounded characters with actual flesh to them, with feelings and actions that felt real. I also made quick work of Ridiculous! by DL Carter. It was a free kindle Regency era romance about someone who poses as a man to support her sisters, then meets the man she falls head over heels with but can't do anything about it, blah, blah, blah. A harmless enough read if one has the time for it, but Georgette Heyer it isn't, if I want to enjoy something like that I have to go to the master. Plus, I now have the phrase "encroaching mushroom" stuck in my mind forever, it was used so often in the book. I could have done without that. I started The Ocean At the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman after work today and it is So good I'm past half done with it. I had to pull myself away because I have tons of papers to correct and some serious studying to do, but I'm really looking forward to getting back to it tonight, if I can stay awake long enough. Is the Chain of Dogs related to the two Hounds Paran released/sent through the warren of Darkness to who-knows-where from the carriage in Anomander Rake's sword's (I don't remember the name) warren? I'm not sure whether the Hounds have been referenced to as "dogs" though. I'm about to start with that book (I think it's the third). So far I like the story, particularly the parts with Mappo and Icarium, Felisin, Heboric and Baudin (that scene in the Silanda was great), and Fiddler, Crokus and Apsalar. The more I read, the more questions I have, and so far there are few answers. I like that, but that's what makes me read slowlier than usual. I don't remember any of the Hounds playing any role in DG, although it's been a long time since I read it, although you will see more of them in future books. dornish prince Posted October 9, 2013 Share Posted October 9, 2013 I've put everything on hold to read republic of thieves. well, almost everything; i'm too close to the end of rivers of london so i'll probably alternate a bit and then stick to tRoT. i'm also reading age of ultron here and there and am almost done with that. after tRoT i'll get back to raylan, reamde, the last werewolf and add old man's war to the list. I read the beginning of it on my calibre because it was randomly open and really, really enjoyed it. this scalzi guy is spinning an addicting yarn so far. Just politely say it wasn't your cup of tea, but thanks for loan. She should be flattered that you actually bothered to finish it. If she gives you any grief be sure to point that out. I'm a quarter into The Casual Vacancy. I only read the first four HP books and I never thought much of Rowling's prose so I would never have picked this up if it weren't for an interview I read with Stephen King recently where he said it was great. I finished The Thin Man earlier today. Having just read one of le Carré's Smiley novels, I noticed... Spoiler Nick is a really good (retired) private detective who served in World War I. While a lot of things he says about himself are jokes and empty words, I believe that this is true. George Smiley is a really good intelligence officer who served in World War II. The fact that FEMALES, let alone FEMALES WHO IDENTIFY AS FEMINIST, enjoy that book makes me feel like I'm in some sort of virtual reality and the memory has gone bad, and its all slowly corrupting. The thing I took away from that book is that...girls want to be beaten and then raped? WHAT THE FUCK! Sorry. Bored in class. And I hate that book more than all of Sword Of Truth combined.
