So I didn't see the game, but... it seems like Mourinho had his team playing against ten men, at home, and he decided the best option was to sit on an away goals lead for 60 minutes? And it bit him in the backside?

Indeed. It was the eight or nine Chelsea players immediately surrounding the ref that got Zlatan sent off. The ref basically bottled it.
