Watch, Watched, Watching: Blame is safer than praise

Wached American History X and Made in Britain back to back, so had a bit of a neo-nazi double whammy there. Just been putting off these two movies for awhile because who wants to watch a film with piece of shit racist protagonists??!? But both were absolutely excellent in completely different ways.

Great film. If you haven't finished working through the Coens' entire collection, you really should finish going through them all. The only one that has very little merit to it is The Ladykillers, although I haven't seen Inside Llewyn Davis yet.

And Roger Deakins is simply legendary! One of my favourite cinematographic sequences from any film is the train robbery in The Assassination Of Jesse James.... - simply incredible - and if only the middle section of it was better it would be a masterpiece in my opinion.

I've been watching a TV show called You, Me And The Apocalypse recently. Terrible title but it's quite amusing and diverting. Rob Lowe is great fun as a chain-smoking, foul-mouthed priest.

Assasination of Jesse James is beautiful.

Has anyone ever heard of The Bletchley Circle?.... I saw a commercial for it on a local station that usually shows high school football and news stories of lost cats... but it looked really interesting

I saw the first episode or two about a year ago and thought they were quite good.

Did you know Roger Deakins has never won an Academy Award?

I feel like that's a crime! Many of the decisions are understandable and he was just unlucky, like in the year of ...Jesse James... he was also nominated for No Country For Old Men but lost out to Robert Elswit for There Will Be Blood - I think you can make a case for any of them but I think the sheer impact of PT Anderson's film is probably what decided it.

The most staggering loss was The Shawshank Redemption. He should have taken that award. It went to Legends Of The Fall.

Finally got around to starting AHS: Freak Show yesterday. Some nice special effects, costumes etc. Not as interested in the concept as I was with Coven (because witchiness) but  I'll see how it goes.

Glad I never had a problem with clowns, lol.

Oh, and I just remembered that the next episode of TLK will be available for me tonight. Yay! :D

I watched Spectre yesterday. I went in with low expectations and was moderately entertained. Very mindless film -- no surprises except for the unbelievable and cheesy romance plotline that was thrown in. Too heavy handed as well but I'll refrain from detail due to spoilers. I liked Dave Bautista as the henchman. Wouldn't have minded watching him execute some more people.

This is one of those movies I'd leave on the TV in the background while working on my computer.

I liked it, and commented on it in a thread awhile back. I can't remember for sure, but I think the first two series were three episodes for one case each, and the third series had two, two episode cases. There was also a casting shakeup in the third series, and it just wasn't nearly as good as the first two. I really did like the first two, especially the first.

Two years ago I decided that Is should watch the Friday the 13th hadn't yet seen and that I naturally should watch one each upcoming Friday the 13th. So today, five Friday's later I finally watched the last one, which was Part 9; Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday. It was terrible. The story is nonsensical, they have completely stopped attempting to follow any sorts of continuity, it isn't even internally consistent and the acting is awful. However some of the characters are quite decent and even sympathetic and I guess you could give it point for being original. And the intro is hilarious.

It is also not worse than Jason Takes Manhattan, which is by far the worst entry in the franchise.

Watched Coherence last night on the recommendation of someone in this thread. In the first ten minutes I found everyone so obnoxious that I hoped the comet would land on their house. But once it got going I was drawn in and it was enjoyable enough. It's not as mind bending as Primer but it definitely gets you thinking.

Do all the best gangster films have a montage of people being killed? At the very least its something that seems to happen far more often in gangster films over other genres.

Off the top of my head - Godfather 1 & 2, Goodfellas, Casino, Un Prophet, City of God.

Hmm, I never really thought of those scenes as montages. I guess you're right. I would also add The Untouchables and The Cotton Club to that list. Not necessarily what I would call the best gangster films, but montages are included. Another similarity is the films set in the 20s and 30s having the newspaper headlines on screen during those montages. I can't remember whether Miller's Crossing or Road to Perdition had montages.

I finished Ken Burns' 1996 documentary The West, last night. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Road to Perdition has a montage of bank robberies. I can't recall is Miller's Crossing does or not.

LA Confidential has a montage of newspaper headlines (Or it might just be the book that does that)

L.A. Confidential starts off with a montage of Mickey Cohen's associates getting killed while Danny DeVito monologues. Miller's Crossing does not have one, just a big shootout that takes place mostly in the background.
