Which Tyler
Cummings giving a press conference at 4.00 - from the Rose Garden. Which is a bit like Monica Lewinsky giving her side of the story from the oval office. Rumours that he's going to announce that he's firing Johnson
Gaston de Foix
18 hours ago, Werthead said: It's a bit more than that. It's widely understood that Mary Wakefield - the current Mrs. Cummings - is the second woman who was allegedly groped by Boris at the Spectator (along with Charlotte Edwards, who made the allegation), but Wakefield has denied the allegations in decidedly non-vociferous terms, and on each occasion she has done so, has also said that Charlotte is her friend and someone she respects enormously, which is a bit of an odd thing to say about someone ragging on your husband's boss and your own ex-boss. Definitely the feeling there that Boris needs to be nice to someone who has a loaded gun and might let it off at any moment (although it seems to be a hollow fear, since it would also prove Wakefield is a liar one way or another). To add to the decidedly schoolyard feel of all of this, Harry Cole, the hack behind Starmer Fieldgate, is Carrie Symonds' ex and apparently still a good friend. Although Cole - normally Johnson's cheerleader-in-chief at the Mail - has also been quite critical of the handling of the Cummings story, noting that the cabinet were briefed on the initial story before it broke but not the second wave of visits, which they got ambushed with during additional interviews today. There's going to be a cabinet meeting tomorrow (unusual on a Bank Holiday) where it sounds like fireworks could erupt. Yikes. Thanks for the insight. It all sounds terribly incestuous (even in our post-Thrones world). An unholy nexus of journos and politicos.

Raja
Imagine thinking any of what he is saying is not something faced by lots & lots of people during COVID 19. This is basically it. In addition, he confirms large parts of the story published by the mirror which the PM denied yesterday. What a joke.
dog-days
So far he's bragged about all the big decisions he has to make (in his important role as unelected political apparatchik) and his dad's private forest. I don't think he gets it, you know.
Heartofice
Should have given this press conference days ago. Wouldn’t have had to go through this circus if he had.

Taking his small child along, despite being unsure whether he could drive safely. Regardless of the coronavirus situation, people who are unsure they can drive safely should not be driving. mormont
The mere fact that this press conference is taking place is a public advert for what a complete coward Johnson is. Cummings is his special adviser, not a government minister. Sack him, or don't. But don't give him a public platform to explain to the nation why he shouldn't be sacked. What kind of leadership is that?

What kind of leadership is that? Bizarre take. Why shouldn’t he give his side of the story? Given the amount of media coverage in the past few days, this is actually what should have happened straight away.

What kind of leadership is that? The one you (collectively not personally) voted for. It's the kind of leadership you expect from PM hiding in fridge to avoid questions by the press. So gotta say the same, I say to the Americans, it's the exact product as advertised.

mormont
Just now, Heartofice said: Bizarre take. Why shouldn’t he give his side of the story? Because the one thing Cummings has got right is that he isn't accountable to us. He isn't a minister, or even an MP. He's an employee. He doesn't have to give us an explanation. He has to give his boss an explanation. Which he did. And his boss has announced that he found the explanation to be satisfactory. It clearly wasn't, but there it is. Johnson took responsibility for Cummings' future when he stood up at the press conference yesterday. So what is this supposed to achieve? Why is Cummings up there as if he's accountable to the press and the public, when he is not? He's an apparatchik, this is a circus, and Johnson is a coward. mormont
Right. So largely, this press conference did nothing but confirm that the press coverage was all true, despite the PM saying yesterday that unspecified bits of it weren't true. It added nothing at all to the public understanding of what happened, did nothing to restore public confidence in the government advice, and did not even offer an apology. What a waste of time.
