When I watched Black Narcissus (the 1947 film), I had no idea a remake was in the works. I don't know that I'm terribly interested by it -- it seems they've padded the length a bit, put a bit more flesh on display, and dialed back the melodrama. Also, the Technicolor presentation of the original really pops wonderfully, whereas there was a strange flatness to the color grading in this footage. For some reason a lot of shows these days run with very muted lighting, even when it's supposed to be broad daylight. Can't say I care for the trend.

The Son, we have some acquaintances at the literary agency that represents Nesbø (the founder of the agency has gotten an executive producer credit), to say they're pleased by this development is to put it mildly. If anyone's seen Headhunters, with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, that's based on another Nesbø book

EXCLUSIVE: Rebecca F. Kuang’s series of fantasy novels including The Poppy War, are set to be adapted for television after Peter Luo’s Starlight Media optioned the rights.

Starlight Media, which has backed films including Crazy Rich Asians and Midway, has taken the rights to The Poppy War, Dragon Republic and The Burning God.

The company has teamed with financing and production banner SA Inc to develop and finance the female-led, fantasy epic, which combines the history of twentieth-century China and a world of gods and monsters.

Allen Fischer from management/production company Artists First is packaging the project with Starlight, and is in the process of attaching a showrunner.

Inspired by the mixture of the atmosphere of Song dynasty and the Second Sino-Japanese War in mid-20th-century China, the books build an imaginary world of shamanism and classical Chinese legends with adventure.

The Poppy War was first published by Harper Voyage in 2018 and was named book of the year by publications including The Washington Post and the Guardian. It was followed by The Dragon Republic, which was published in 2019 and The Burning God, which was published last month.

‘District 9’ Director Neill Blomkamp Has Made An Under-The-Radar Supernatural Horror Movie During The Pandemic
https://deadline.com/2020/12/neill-blomkamp-horror-movie-pandemic-district9-elysium-1234651672/

EXCLUSIVE: District 9 and Elysium director Neill Blomkamp has made an under-the-radar supernatural horror movie during the pandemic.

Backed by Midway outfit AGC Studios, the untitled film shot in British Columbia over the summer and is the director’s first feature film since 2015 sci-fi movie Chappie.

Blomkamp had been gearing up to shoot AGC-backed Taylor Kitsch action-thriller The Inferno this year but the pandemic struck and knocked back that movie to 2021.

So, we understand Blomkamp and AGC hatched a plan to make a more nimble production in the meantime in the wilds of Canada’s most westernmost province. Plot details are being kept under wraps on the project but we hear it is something the filmmaker had always wanted to make and is expected to be finished around spring next year.

Variety reports some sort of True Blood reboot is in the works at HBO with Alan Ball executive producing, though it appears two other exec-producers will do the actual showrunning and writing.

Doubt it's going to rehash any old plotlines, but rather focus on stuff from the books they left out the first time,  and probably new stuff set in the same setting.

My opinion of Tom Cruise just went up.

I don't even know what movie this is but now I want to see it.

Tropic Thunder. It's pretty funny. Robert Downey Jr. is  hilarious as an extremely Method, award-winning Aussie actor cast to play a Black American sergeant in a Vietnam war movie that goes completely off the rails.

This meme is riffing on Tom Cruise' alleged meltdown on the set of the lates MI film (I think).

And yes, Tropic Thunder is amazing.

Lars von Trier Returning to ‘The Kingdom’ with Season 3 of His Cult ’90s Hospital Series

For his next project,  as announced by Zentropa Productions on Thursday, von Trier will be returning to the cult hospital series that established his TV presence in the mid-1990s, “The Kingdom.” Set in the neurosurgical ward of a Copenhagan hospital, the series, now dubbed “The Kingdom Exodus,” will return for a third and final season in 2022. Expected to shoot next year, the new revamp of “The Kingdom” will consist of five hour-long episodes.

Producers say the new “Kingdom” will contain a mix of new and old characters from the original, which followed the idiosyncratic staff of the Danish hospital and their encounters with the supernatural and unexplainable. A third season of the show, which ended in 1997, was always planned but fell apart due to the deaths of cast members Ernst-Hugo Järegård and Kirsten Rolffes, as well as von Trier’s dedicated turn toward film.

Von Trier will direct all five episodes, and while plot details remain under wraps, the Danish filmmaker did provide this statement:

“Borders come in many forms; they may be lines drawn with rulers on white paper (often invisible to whoever chances to visit the actual geographical locations). The lines of the borders may be illustrative, if not to say quite fictitious and downright mean; they may be drawon in a soft, red color, practically invisible, and perhaps even as a dotted line, almost as if indicating an apology or even – shame. Nevertheless, the lines hang there in inconceivable numbers, and together they constitute those ‘territories’ that the inhabitants are strong enough to defend. Entering and leaving often entail violence, for, of course, any visitor is expected to return after ending his or her business.

I'm still baffled at how combing two completely separate plots in one show is meant to work.
