A Horse Named Stranger
5. September 1698 Csar Peter Alexeyevich (Peter the Great before you ask) returns from a trip to Europe and prohibits beards, because they're unfashionable. Since outlawing facial hair did not result in the eradication of beards in Russia, he later adds a beard tax. (true story). We'll return to Russia later. 1774 the first continental congress takes place in Philadelphia 1793 The National Assembly in France agrees on measures to deal with counter revolutionary elements. The so called reign of terror results in up to 40.000 deaths 1882 New York, New York (star spreading the news)... The Central Labor Union organizes a protest with a picknick thereafter. Thus the US Labor Day is born. It'S apparently also the Birthday of Tottenham Hotspurs FC. 1914 The Battle of the Marne in WWI starts. The bloody battle lasts for a week resulting in 550.000 dead soldiers. 1918 as promised we return to Russia. The Council of the People's Commissars pass a decree on the Red Terror (yes, the reference to The French National Assembly of 1793 (check above) was a deliberate choice). 1972 Munich the Palestinian terrorists of Black September move into the Olympic village. Murder two and take eleven athletes as hostage. 1977 Hans-Martin Schleyer gets abudcted (and later killed) by members of the RAF (Rote Arme Fraktion, not the bloody Royal Airforce). IheartIheartTesla
You probably already know this, but Mercury's parents were Indian (from Gujrat), and his birth name was Farookh Balsara. Not only that, but Zoroastrian/Parsi Indians, which means their ancestors migrated from what is now considered Iran. Mostly to escape religious persecution, and they probably found acceptance for their heretic beliefs in middle-ages India. So you could consider him truly to be a citizen of the world, while on the surface having British nationality. Ive long thought it odd that a lot of newer religions mysteriously shared vast similarities almost as if their Messiah's had plagarist tendencies where the stories mirrored ealier Zoroastrianism. LongRider
8 September 1966 The first episode of the sci-fi series Star Trek aired on American television. And the meme "Beam me up, Scotty." was born. However, the wiki notes that "It was first broadcast on September 6, 1966, on Canada's CTV network." I did not that know that. Way cool! 1504 Michelangelo's the David was unveiled in the Piazza della Signoria in Florence; considered a masterpiece, the sculpture is one of the defining works of the Renaissance. dog-days
Five hundred and ten years since the Battle of Flodden Field (1513). King James IV became the last King from Britain to die in battle, which he did at the age of forty along with a large number of the Scottish nobility. It was a battle that the Scots should have won given that they outnumbered the English and were apparently well-positioned on top of a hill. Unfortunately for them, the cannons that should have devastated the English lines couldn't be manoeuvred so were next to useless, and the advance of the Scots infantry got literally bogged down in a marsh at the foot of the hill. So, total fuck-up. And a shame, since James IV was, as monarchs go, rather a good one. Zorral, LongRider and Corvinus85
