If you haven't seen it yet go and search out Ant's huge game saving block, he got up high, smashed his head on the rim/backboard and face planted pretty heavily on the floor.

Gobert I think is mostly wrong here. Refs knowing what the league office wants for TV ratings is likely more influential. However, because of the gambling money that should mean they need to be better. They were trash in that game and have been in general for a while across various sports.

Tennis is the only sport I'd gamble on because I'd never feel consistently cheated.

Yeah, that going to be on highlight reels for a long long time, still a total prick though.

Absolutely mental shot.

In other news, Knicks are good again now that OG is back. It's amazing how much he changes the team.

I love OG. Wish we still had him but that is him. When he is out there he improves everyone's play defensively a lot. "When he is out there" is the problem.

So the Jontay Porter story is kind of nuts.  Yes its a marginal NBA player but it certainly appears that he took himself out to guarantee the under on prop bets.  Now was there other team members involved or team officials?  I have to assume banned for life if found guilty.

No question banned for life if found guilty.  Have to assume that he was into gambling or some sort of blackmail opportunity to even consider something like that.  He was earning 415k this year for the Raptors, and had earned 2.3 million thus far in the NBA.  That's getting close to set-for-life kinda money if he is smart with his finances (not likely, I know).

The existence of these player over/unders is just a really bad idea.  So much potential for corruption.  And for what?  Is there really going to be less gambling money coming in if you can't bet on benchwarmers to hit 5.5 points per game?

I actually wonder if organized crime might place a bunch of money on a player and then drug him or have some goons fight with him outside a club.  Wouldn't take much to get him out of tomorrow's game, and if you have a few million dollars in bets placed across the country, that is quite the haul.

Local news has reported that he had a discord channel where you could pay him for betting tips.  Also that his locker has been cleaned out by the Raps. I have to assume he is just a moron.  Hopefully he didn't rope in any of his teammates or his brother.

I saw a funny Tweet about Ohtanei the other day but it applies here just as much:

"Welcome back to SportsCenter Presented by ESPN Bet, for more on the Ohtani situation we go to our FanDuel MLB Insider Jeff Passan at our DraftKings Studio in Los Angeles brought to you by Caesar's Sportsbook.  Jeff, how could something like this happen?"

One of the weird things I learned while listening to a sports podcast about gambling is how sophisticated it is at the highest ends. It's not uncommon for the top 1% gamblers to make a ton of bets in Asian markets on US sports to try to manipulate betting lines then dump a ton of money on them in US books. And there's really no way to track it because they will use third parties to do it. Pretty wild.

That said I'll never understand how athletes get caught. It seems easy to me to find a third party to make all your bets. You just have to trust the person and have plausible deniability. Betting on yourself is dumb, it's too obvious, but say you buy your cousin a house for $5M and then a year later they sell it and buy a condo. Then that extra cash is effectively washed. Then just never leave a paper trail. Only talk in person or have another person be your go between.

I mean, pretty sure every major sports league allows their players to bet on all other sports, just not their own league.  And, of course, it has to be legal where you bet.

I looked this up and it's a little tricky from what I read, but the rules have loosened. If I have it right you can bet on other leagues, but for some sports it's banned doing so whenever you're on team property. Players can also invest in betting companies, so like DraftKings, but if they do then I think they're not supposed to use the site to gamble. Players in some leagues can't go to in person sports books even if it's to bet on other sports. In the NFL you appear to not be able to gamble at all on sports during the season. Leagues also heavily monitor activity (probably what flagged Ohtani). So it's not that you can't gamble at all, but if you want to break certain rules you would be wise to find a way to mask it.
