Just finished Bringing Out the Dead. Certainly not one of my favorite Scorsese movies, but it was solid. Nicholas Cage was a perfect choice, as I think he does weird pretty well. Good soundtrack too. I'm now down to only Kundun to have seen Scorsese's entire filmography.

I need Bringing out the Dead, Kundun, After Hours, and Last Temptation of Christ. Plan on knocking them out this year.

Watched The Hateful Eight last night. Soooooo long. Cut off 45 minutes and it'd still be a good movie. Thought there were a lot of really good scenes but some scenes had way too much exposition which made the movie drag.

I genuinely didn't feel the length at all ! Lots of people I know mention it and I was honestly just genuinely captivated by the movie hahahaha I didn't feel bored once.

I wasn't bored per se, just thought it would have been a better, tighter movie if they got rid of 45 minutes of exposition.

I've seen six Scorcese films so far (looking to see all of them someday), but interestingly enough Kundun was one of them. The others are Taxi Driver, Casino, Gangs of New York, the Departed and Shutter Island.

You should stop whatever you're doing and watch Goodfellas

Seriously.

I haven't made a concerted effort to watch all of Scorsese's movies, but looking at IMDB the only (non-short, non-documentary) movies of his I'm missing are: Boxcar Bertha, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, The Last Temptation of Christ, and Kundun.

When I watched it it took me ages to get into it. I was actually advised by people at the time to just stop fiddling about with other stuff at the same time (ie Twitter) and just focus on the film. But by the time I was actually really into it, I wished I'd paid more attention earlier on. It's an intense film which is quite slow. I had another issue with it too - the sound quality was very off putting to me. I looked this up and they did it on purpose. For me, I had to have the volume on my TV at almost 40 (where a normal TV show would be about 20) otherwise the sound dropped in and out so much I felt that I was continually missing things. So I will definitely watch it again and watch it 'properly' next time.

Last night we watched Pi. That was pretty intense. I'm cool with the film being ultimately futile and all but it was a little bit IN YOUR FACE for me. Certainly not a relaxing film to watch. :) But after watching that we got into a general discussion about films which are supposed to be about the nature of reality. We have Tree of Life on our to watch list. But there is a film I have seen which I am blanking on the title of right now. It is similar-ish to The Fountain (which I've seen) and I'd really like for us to sit down one weekend and watch Tree of Life, The Fountain and this other film close together.

So please, you guys, can anyone think of a film which is similar in theme to The Fountain and came out around the same time (within a year or two)?

I have tried googling 'movies like The Fountain' but that didn't get me anywhere. It isn't Primer or Upstream Color.

Cloud Atlas share some themes, but I guess that's not within a year or two. Do you remember if it was a sci-fi or not? Knowing that would probably narrow it down a little.

I was genuinely disappointed when the curtains rolled down halfway through (I'm curious, was this for all viewings that they had a break halfway, or just some?) because I was so engrossed. May also be due to the cut being right after

Jackson killing the old man

but even so. Like you, I certainly didn't feel the length at all

Since you already said Goodfellas and Raging Bull are at the top of your list, I'll recommend Mean Streets as well. Definitely one of my favorite Scorsese movies.

I went to a pretty cheap cinema and didn't get the interval - it was probably the one bit of the movie that threw me a tiny bit because we got the Tarantino (?) narration of what happened in the last 15 mins but it followed straight on from the previous scene hah.

Watched Kundun. Thought it was quite good. Gorgeous looking film. Had no idea Roger Deakins did the cinematography until I looked it up about halfway through. Also, not knowing a lot about the Dalai Lama it was pretty upsetting to see how things really went down.

Want to complete the Coen Bros filmography next. I still need to see The Hudsucker Proxy and A Serious Man.

I read Cloud Atlas and then watched it the cinema - I don't think that is it - plus that was out year later. I am pretty sure it was a scifi film. I cannot imagine a film of this nature could NOT be a scifi film in the broadest sense of the genre. Or do you mean, is it set in space/feature aliens?

While on the 'mind-bending' film watching spree we saw Moon last night. Quite a clever film but ultimately a bit sad and depressing. I guess once you're off of planet earth people can do whatever they hell they want to you and it's largely out of your hands. *makes note to self to not go into space*

I finished watching Season 1 of Sense8 a couple of days ago. I think I watched it in less than 4 days, quite a feat if you have two small children and a full time job that also requires you doing homework. For some reason, I can't get it out of my head.

Watched Infernal Affairs (the one that inspired The Departed). I liked it, not near as much as Scorseses version but there was some things that were handled better. The ending was definitely superior imo and some of the scenes were much more tense. But I didn't really care about the characters at all like I did in The Departed and Scorseses death scenes were done way better and were a lot more effective.

It's first on my watch list, along with Raging Bull :)

Pretty much everyone who has seen Goodfellas has it as one of the best movies they have ever seen. It is in my top ten for sure. For me it's the best gangster / mob movie ever. It seems to really get you the feeling of being on the inside.

My friend and his wife saw The Hateful 8 and both said it was just too long. Said it wasn't a bad movie but that it just dragged on in places.

For me I just watched Straight outta Compton again. My wife and daughter got it on PPV. Really good movie and brings back a lot of the feel for that time. I don't put this movie as high as Boyz in the Hood but it was damn close.
