I opened a tin of tuna for the first time in years today. There was barely enough fish for a sandwich. Fucking shrinkflation. I hate it.

A jacket potato and tuna is a thing of beauty. Light on the mayo, lots of black pepper, Red onion, sweetcorn and a crisp side salad with a lemon-y dressing...I'm actually drooling.

Eta: Is this one of those jacket potato toppings American's scoff at? Like beans and cheese?

And when Daniel Craig pops up at the end and this was a Knives Out movie all along? What then?!

I got lost with these. Where's the timeline now? Caesar is dead? This is years after the last one?

Yellow is the cheapest here, followed by red followed by shallots. I don't know whether I see white onions ever at the store. I vary between shallots and yellow onions in cooking, depending on how fancy I want / need to be. Plus I always hear Uncle Roger over my shoulder saying "onions are shallots for poor people".

Speaking of shallots, making lamb rendang tonight for the daughter-in-law's parents. They are Hindu so can't go with the usual beef. I've made the lamb version a couple of times before. On balance I would say I prefer beef, but the lamb is very good too. Have to scoop off a bit of fat during the cooking process though.

I'm not great at cooking curries, but my friend's mam (who is first gen Indian and does a lot of traditional cooking) always says that the sign of a good curry is when you see that fat/oil separate from the curry and form a pool on top. Not sure if that's a generally accepted rule but her food is exceptional, so I trust her

I put my trainer on without socks in gran canaria, and there were cockroaches inside. It was fucking gross.

One thing that's helped me deal with some of the things I'm not great with, is trying not to pass the phobias on to my kids.  I'm much better with spiders since I've been conscious of not making them scared.

in Fuertaventura we had cats around the hotel that delighted in killing cockroaches, it was both a relief (when the cockroach was scuttling toward us) and a terror (when they'd proudly bring us their prey and drop it at out feet)

Whoa!  You're right!

How about flying cockroaches????

I was once a young little thing, on holiday in the sunny climes of Tunisia. As I loved to do, I departed from the mothership and went for an evening stroll around the hotel grounds. Beautiful. A light breeze stirred the trees. It was warm, lovely, peaceful. Oh, what's that? A leaf has blown into my top, I should brush it awa-

FUCK WHAT IS THIS FLYING COCKROACH GETITOFFGETITOFFGETITOFF!

The above is a true re-telljng, and cost me dearly to recall

Yellow onions are much cheaper here. But both are cheap as fuck really.

yeah I think the price difference is about 5/10p a bag?

I prefer red onions when I'm using them raw, caramelised, or for a specific flavour. If its for a base, garnish or to bulk out a dish when budgets are tight, I use brown

You asked me to use my imagination? Are you sure about this? :D

So lemme picture it. So to get in the mood, you went to a restaurant, had a fine bottle wine, then you went home and put on some music, which I just assume was the Beetlejuice musical. Yeah, I think I am getting the picture. :P

It takes very vivid imagination to imagine such a falsity...

Don't mothers and grandmothers teach everybody that underwear must be white to be able to be washed on 90° C in America? It is something of a stereotype here.

I've not heard that one. Did you ever get "Make sure you wear clean underwear when you go out because you never know when you'll get hit by a bus."

Erm, in hindsight what a thing to say to a 5 year old.

Ex-fiancé would disagree. :P

Just saying, white or light colored underwear, especially for most men, bad idea. But ladies, don't think that it isn't an issue for you too. Darker colors work better unless you need something for a specific outfit.

Um.....spotting is a bitch

It's my birthday in less than a month. Loads of new socks incoming. Oh happy day.

But what's your favourite brand? Socks can be a great gift, but I cannot abide the cheap nasty ones that are super thin and threadbare.

I don't need a designer brand though, I'm very happy with a nice pair of TU (Sainsburys clothing). But do not give me Primark or George (ASDA)

I bet Doors of Stone is a total fuckfest.  Like, after living with the sex ninjas and and the Felurian side quest, he's loses all interest in things school and revenge related.  He just dives fully into his sexuality and fucks his way across (whatever the name of the land in this story is).

My theory is that the book has been completed for years, Rothfuss wasn't lying, he's just been at a stand-off with the publisher, who refuses to print it as it is.  Way too many fae fannies and sorcerous schlongs flying around.

plot twist, Kvothe steps up with his fae sex skills, is rejected, and births the incel movement in whatever this world is called. (forgive me, its been so many years since I last read now)

Speaking of Conan, he featured in probably the greatest episode of Hot Ones of all time:

This has really reignited Conan on the internet from what I've seen, its prompted people to repost loads of older clips from him (funny, not controversial)

My mam still tells my 95 year old nana off, for putting too much salt on stuff.

My Nanna used to hoard salt packets when she was hospitalised. The matron eventually told the catering staff not to give her any so they stopped and she still managed to hoard them. When she was no longer able to get out of bed alone she told me the truth - she'd shuffled out of bed one night when they were short staffed and taken a handful from the staff kitchen then hidden them in her toiletries bag.

I love her and miss her so much when I remember these kinds of thing

What a lot of people might say is that there were simply a lot of biological females who were not coming forward but suddently felt able to.

Honestly I don’t think that passes the smell test and Cass doesn’t think so either. There might be a number where that applies but the huge shift doesn’t get explained by that. I’d be reticent to use the term ‘social contagion’ too ( if only because for some reason it seems to set some people off) but social pressures definitely played their part.

The very close correlation with a time when kids and teenagers started to get phones, were exposed to social media and the related social pressure I think definitely contributed to a slew of mental health issues for young girls.

No doubt a lot of them started to get very confused and unhappy about their bodies and sexuality. At the same time you started getting trends online telling them what those answers might be.

Again, the numbers by themselves are not the alarming part, the alarming part was the failure of GIDS when they started seeing these girls.

its hard to take you in good faith when you say things like this. Surely its obvious that the term "social contagion" is very loaded with unpleasant implications. Words should be chosen carefully, especially where the subject matter is sensitive and if you can't see why the term social contagion in this context would set someone off you're either being wilfully obtuse or coming from a position of bad faith.

I'll also add that this isn't exclusive to you, and is part of a much broader problem I've observed reading this thread and the articles that have been linked. A lot of the language used seems particularly loaded to lead to fear mongering and hysteria. "Alarming for anyone who genuinely cares for a child..." And then concluding with "...is an opportunity opportunity for unity." Did the author proof read this article before posting?

Eta: To be clear, I'm not weighing in with my opinion on the subject matter here. I have one, to no surprise its the opposite to HoI, but I'm not interested in arguing it. I'm more concerned with the language being used in the discussion here and elsewhere on the internet which I think has the potential to be very dangerous and stir up a lot of emotions against a group many are already hostile towards

Sure, you’re never getting originality with Joe Abercrombie.

What you get is loads of black humour, hilarious dialogue, and much fun.

When Joe writes clichés it seems to be done in an intentional way, and there's always that Abercrombie twist that makes it his own.

BSC is probably still my favourite book of his and at its core its a run of the mill revenge story but so well done

Eta: Obligatory "please listen to the audio books because Steven Pacey is incredible"

Now, that's being brave, Spocky.  Some will make judgments about you for the mere fact that you were accused.  That's why I say I always withhold judgement until a thorough investigation  is done.

Were there any repercussions for your accuser?   No one should be capable of ruining someone's life and just walking away.

I agree with this, but I will say that its difficult to put into practice. We had a situation at work where A accused B of sexual assault. Obviously it was handled by HR and 'confidential' but as with any office environment, gossip spreads like wildfire so everyone knew. Because I didn't know either party well  I had nothing to base any kind of judgment on, but even so, just the thought that it could have happened made me want to avoid B. I'm pleased to say I didn't allow myself that snap judgment, but I can understand the instinct to react in that way.

And I think if you've experienced what the accusation is, be in sexual assault, physical or verbal abuse, whatever, the instinct to make a snap judgment is likely to be even stronger than your average observer
