Did Ward really escape that easily?

That was ridiculous.

Also show: if you want to employ dramatic slow-mo in your fight scenes, you better make extra sure to make it look like the blows connect during those shots.

Otherwise this was entertaining, but why are SHIELD no longer treated like criminals by Talbot? They are still an unsanctioned organisation carrying out black ops across the globe and getting in the way of the people officially charged with doing the job SHIELD used to do.

You knew Talbot was going to come around eventually. Also, I realized Ward was going to escape when I saw FBI written on those uniforms. Real life law enforcement agencies don't stand much chance against comic book villains.

Talbot is acting nice because Coulson just handed over the group that attacked the UN which will make Talbot's unit look good. Not sure if this was just a temporary truce or if Talbot is really laying off them.

That was ridiculous.

Would've been far better if one of the soldiers escorting him was Hydra, they escape together, then Ward kills the guy and runs off.

Or maybe the guy was Hydra, sent to kill Ward to make sure no more intel gets leaked, then in the ensuing confusion Ward kills the guy and escapes.

Or anything more rational than what I saw.

I didn't have too much issue with it, we're all meant to be in awe of how focused and dangerous Ward is, so they had to make it pretty quick I guess. I thought him purposefully disconnecting his thumb at the least was a nice touch. Comics make the authorities look incompetent all the time anyway.

They've managed to improve pretty much every character from S1..... and perfectly counteract it by introducing bad ones. This horrible ex-wife stuff (the second she walked in last episode, the whole arc was set in stone; they argue a lot, there are 'subtle' clues they still have feelings for one another, there'll be some jeopardy where they have to reveal them YAAAAAAWN) and then we have 'guy who cleans some mechanical part in an oily shirt while being patient with Fitz' and the other guy for whom the most memorable thing so far was when he actually said 'DA-YUM!' to the ex-wife reveal.

Meh. I really wanna like it cos I love the Marvel films but meeeeeeeeeh.

How are the ratings holding? I just hope they keep going with more seasons, because I think the more they keep tying the films in, the better it will be...

Ratings have steadily declined, there was a slight uptick from last week with the latest episode (from 1.6 to 1.7), but that only translated into 0.08 million additional viewers total.

It's currently roughly on the same level as The Flash, which managed 1.5 and 1.4 these past two weeks and his considered a huge success, but that's on the CW and presumably has a much smaller budget than SHIELD.

Did I hear right? That Hydra guy who May took on is named Scarlotti? If so, I guess he's Whiplash.

Yes, and he was phenomenal. Hope it's not the last we see of him.

I didn't think Ward's escape was played poorly. He's a super spy. The cronies escorting him were not. The whole "I will break my hand to get out of these cuffs because I scoff at humanly pain" is super spy 101. Really glad they're playing up the creepy factor with him, as opposed to shying from it once it peaked last season.

But that's the point. He's a super spy. Everyone should have known to put their best on him, and had him in a Hannibal Lector facemask / straightjacket / trolley combo able to move nothing but his eyes.

And then see him escape from that.

Yup - this. Even in the comics supervillain types get manacles rather than cuffs.

After a good start I feel like this and the last episode are sliding back into the lazy writing of early S1. The plotting and characerization is better, but I worry it's all gonna get ridiculous again.

Wasn't Whiplash the villain in Iron Man 2? The Mickey Rourke character?

Different iteration of the character. But with the chain blade they were definitely paying homage at the least, and the mohawk. http://www.writeups.org/img/inset/Scarlotti_Whiplash_1_h1.jpg I doubt they'll actually refer to him as Whiplash though.

And this might be just me sympathising for villains, but I'd like to see a bad guy that can beat May/Mockingbird/the Team up fairly easily, and they actually have to get clever/lucky to beat them. Ward getting his foot nailed to the floor was good for this reason, he has the upper hand in the fight and May beats him with quick thinking.

I thought tonight's episode was the best of the season -- really great stuff. Overall, the episode moved fairly quickly. The Coulson stuff last season was painfully drawn out. Moreover, if this episode happened last season, it would've taken them 4 episodes to tell a story which fit into this one episode, tonight. I am thinking that map is totally a blueprint for Attilan. I am really curious to see how the show is going to handle this stuff, with the Inhuman film so many years away.

With Coulson cured of his compulsion, I wonder if this whole storyline is going to be put into hibernation, with the Ward stuff taking center stage. Seems like that will be hard to do with Raina and Skye's dad's involvement.

I can't help thinking that Mockingbird had the Hydra programming done to her, making her a sleeper. Tell me I'm not the only one who remembers the very strange cut-away from Bobbi's premiere episode, where she was seemingly about to engage head Hydra dude and his entourage. Something tells me he mentioned the magic word, and it zapped her into Hydra zombie mode. I can't help but think this is going to be revisited with her springing him out of jail.

I wonder. I'm hoping they keep up this Kree stuff. Back off with Ward for a while, he's meant to be laying low (aside from killing his brother,) let folk wonder what he's up to.

I point you to another Whedon show (though this is the other one) Dollhouse. Alpha was the shit in that and was the main villain of series one, how many episodes did he appear in? Two. But come to think of it this might just be because it's Alan Tudyk.

I hope they can show restraint with Ward, but I'm not sure they will.

So Coulson has been drawing a street map of Attilan? The way he explained it as the subjects drawing the destination of some kind of homing instinct is alright as far as answers go, but that's apparently not going to help them find it at all, which makes the whole mystery a bit pointless.

They're really going forward with trying to redeem Ward, what with him gift-wrapping Hydra operatives for Coulson. Such a pity.

I do hope they keep the Avengers 2 teases to a minimum, Coulson's posse is obviously not going to have a big role in that.
