Is DA worth renting? Yes. Absolutely. For once Pacino's scenery chewing works, since you would expect the Devil to be, er, dramatic. Good supporting cast. I only rent a movie on Prime every once in a while, but I still buy blu rays pretty frequently. Mostly of older or more obscure films that I can’t just easily find on a streaming platform. They're really cheap these days too. If you rent something three times, you might as well have just bought it.

TheLastWolf
Is there an Oscars thread? Since I couldn't find any, here's the post anyway. Jallikattu is India's official 2021 Oscar entry. With Parasite winning Oscars, foreign films are being considered without bias hopefully. Indian cinema has always been Satyajit Ray for many. Lijo Jose Pelissery is touted to be his contemporary. Malayalam, Bengali and Tamil cinema are the only ones worth watching. Telugu is shit and Hindi produces one good film a year. And they are all named after Hollywood. Kollywood. Bollywood. Tollywood. Molly wood. Lol Anyway, Jallikattu was fantastic with great visuals and the subtitles were spot on according to a friend. Iranian Majid Majidi's fans would love this guy and his films. Mr. Chatywin et al.
Movie contains one random Donald Trump reference. Also, I know I haven't seen this before because I've had a crush on both female leads for years and hot damn!

Pacino is great hamming it up, and it's probably in my top two/three favorite roles for Reeves as well. And a young Theron with a great performance. It's a blast, quite rewatchable too. Okay, we have to discuss this. The movie is not good. There isn't much to take away from it other than, spoiler alert, two women I think are amazing show their tits. That's the only reason why I'd watch this film again, and that's not ever a reason to watch a movie. ETA: Spoiler Double spoilers, FUCK THIS MOVIE. The whole movie is a dream, don't watch it. Ever! Ran
Watched Tarkovsky's Stalker for the first time. A remarkable, singular director, devoted to letting the lens linger. I've read that his film had something like 142 cuts in its 163 minute run time. It's a science fiction parable, loosely based on Roadside Picnic by the Strugatsky brothers (who wrote this script), and has been decidedly influential. It's also very Russian, deep depths of melancholy and existential discussions struggling with the human condition. Amazing atmosphere, too, most of shot on location in desolate parts of Estonia, depicted as to make it feel like you were marching slowly towards the end of the world. The end was not what I expected, including a terrific fourth-wall-breaking speech by Alisa Friendlich. Pairs well with his Solaris.

Veltigar
Knocked Dog Day Afternoon of my list of long overdue classics to watch. I was kind of disappointed by it. The film kind of shows its age and not in a good way. I can see why it caused quite a stir back in the day Spoiler For a 1970s movie, it seems surprisingly respectful to queer people. but I found it pretty boring to watch. A lot of things have changed since the 1970s and I feel like some of the themes of the film have been done better elsewhere. It's mostly a film you watch for the performances, but aside from Casale (who is not in nearly enough scenes) I'm not really that blown away by any of the others. I wouldn't discourage people to watch it, but there are definitely other classics more worthy of attention.

I absolutely adore Dog Day Afternoon, but I can't really disagree with most of this. The "themes" aren't exactly ambitious, and yeah, they've been done better elsewhere. And the largest appeal is simply watching Pacino and Cazale. But Lumet does a great job drawing you in with the intensity of the situation and it's one of those movies that when the credits role you can't believe it's already been two hours. The only recent film I'd say that could compare in that regard is Dunkirk. Also, it has one my favorite movie quotes of all time: Quote Sonny: Is there any special country you wanna go to? Sal: Wyoming.
