A Horse Named Stranger
Meanwhile the entertainment and shamelessness over at the DFB (German FA) is going strong. After a lot of internal divisions and strife after Keller took office as FA chair, with a lot of leaks. Keller snapped some weeks ago and internally called Koch (one of his co-chairs and the suspect leaker and general bell) Freisler. Koch, who is an actual judge, made that public. Keller admitted his wrongdoing and apologized. Koch acknowledged the apology, but refused to accept it. Instead he insisted on and started with procedures to remove Keller from office. In his function as head of the Bavarian FA he is wielding quite a bit of power. There was huge and justified outrage over Keller's words, former President of the Jewish Council Germany, Charlotte Knobloch, who happened to know Keller, met with him, and tried to defend him and give him some cover against allegations of anti-semitism. Koch on his end also started a pissing contest with current German Football League (DFL) CEO, Seifert, and in leaked mails accused him of seeking to destroy the amateur level game, and accused him of seeking a new job with an investment firm, that seeks to monetize football. Basically setting the stage for another round of Amateur clubs versus the Professional game, with himself as the champion for the many amateur level players (and by extension the fans). Seifert fired back, denied the allegations, and demanded an apology from Koch. Also lashing out Koch, that creating an extrnal enemy doesn't solve the structural problems of the FA, and that they should carry out overdue reforms instead of picking a fight with him or the Football League. Bayern's CEO (and general bell) Rummenigge also took some not so hidden shots at Koch, pointing out that, he had been on the FA leadership board for quite a while, which saw the fall of quite a few FA chairs, while the guys pulling the strings in the shadows somehow manage to escape unscathed. Koch claimed he never made those claims and demanded an apology from Seifert. Koch was a guest on a Das Aktuelle Sportstudio (basically one of the two big classical Sport/Football shows on TV) and gave an interview/delivered a show that was quite something. When confronted on some fronts, he basically accused the journalists of using hacked (illegally obtained) material. And he naturally has no intentions to leave his post. Keller has now announced, that he will step down. Again, I think Keller's position was untenable, but Koch presumably still sticking around is really galling. *Links are to a few wikipedia articles, for some context. BigFatCoward
Thats that then. And Leicester look like the might stumble over the line now also.
Mr. Chatywin et al.
5 hours ago, Consigliere said: I don't actually classify premier league sides to be 'have nots'. Thanks to the large broadcasting deal and the very even distribution of that money compared to other leagues, even small teams in the premier league rake in huge sums in broadcasting money. Clubs like Burnley or Brighton pull in around triple the revenue (or more) compared to similarly sized clubs in the other top leagues. By "have nots" I meant teams that have not been in the EPL too long. The few things I've read made different arguments, but my takeaway was it's really hard to finance these teams absent having an uber rich owner because the annual operating budgets are hard to plan for. My impression was a team needs to be in the EPL for a few years before it can really compete even with revenue sharing.
ljkeane
This article in The Athletic on the top four race doesn't say anything particularly exciting but looking at the xg numbers does encapsulate how irritating Liverpool's season has been. The defence isn't exceptional but given the injuries it's fine. In terms of attack the xg, while a bit of a step down on previous seasons unsurprisingly, is pretty good, it's not taking those chances that has really cost us. Consigliere
I'm seeing some reports in Spain saying that Laporte will be getting Spanish citizenship this week (possibly today) and is expected to be selected for the Spanish NT for the Euros.

Our problem this season hasn't just been wasting chances - we had that spell where we barely created anything either, especially at home.
A Horse Named Stranger
Yeah, but if you had just finished off your chances more efficiently you'd undoubtedly finish in the top four. Even in the games you didn't create that much, you usually still managed to squander 2-3 good to great chances and dropped points unnecessarily. Now your chances for a top four finish are rather slim. The only thing you've got going for you is that Leicester and Chelsea will play and take points of each other. You effectively have four must win games. I mean it's certainly possible for Leicester to lose both games, to Chelsea and to Spurs. Otherwise you have ro rely on Chelsea dropping sufficient points against Arsenal, Leicester and Villa. Well, you effectively have to pray for Arsenal getting their act together tonight, as Chelsea most certainly won't drop anything against Villa. Rorshach
...or that Jorginho forgets the basics and hits a backpass straight at goal.
A Horse Named Stranger
Yep, Arsenal have effectively thrown a lifeline to Liverpool's top four hopes. But they still need to win their last four games. If they do that, they very likely will finish top four afterall. It's a tall order, but they are back in control over their own fate now. Let's see how United will push them out of the drivers seat tomorrow.

He did fuck up, but the ball should never have been returned to him in the first place. He had 3-4 Arsenal players near him and was facing his own goal, while Zouma had space and the time to move it forward.

If I remember correctly, when Liverpool won CL in 2005, they ended up fifth in the Premier League and UEFA had to make a special ruling for that and Premier League had 5 teams in CL in 05/06 Liverpool had to play from the first round of qualifiers. After that, UEFA changed the rules so (unless they changed something again) if Chelsea drops out of top four but wins the CL final the team that would end up fourth in the Premier League would not play in CL next season. And sure, he's unlucky that Kepa slips, but that kind of bad luck is one reason why you never put the back pass on goal in the first place. Naw, you can have five teams in the CL. It would have been an issue if Arsenal won the Europa as well, since you can't have six,
The Sunland Lord
Iirc in 2005 Liverpool were a non-nation representative in CL, they let them play from the 1st qualifying round but officially didn't represent England.
ljkeane
They've moved the Champions League final to, er, Porto. So moving it makes sense but once you've decided to move it from Istanbul not having it in the UK is a bit bizarre. Apparently it's due to UEFA not getting quarantine exemptions for sponsors and VIPs. UEFA were probably a bit uncomfortable with having the moral high ground in recent weeks. Rorshach
Can't remember the exact solution, but I do remember that there only should be four from one country. So back in March or so, on a question from us (IIRC), the PL decided that the top four should represent England. Then Liverpool and Everton went ahead and complicated everything with us finishing fourth and Liverpool winning the CL.
Corvinus85
I thought the CL winner gets to play automatically next year. Doesn't the Europa League winner qualify for the CL?
The Sunland Lord
Now there can be 5 teams from a country. For example if Villareal wins the EL there will be 5 Spanish teams in CL next year cause Villareal won't make top 4. Or Chelsea wins the CL but misses on top 4, 5 teams from England then. Edit: Not sure when the change was being made, but certainly not before 2012 when Tottenham finished 4th yet played Europa League next season because Chelsea won the CL but finished outside top 4. Probably in 2015 when it was decided that the EL winner qualifies for CL.

Old system. Long story short. You finish top four you play CL. I asked a few pages ago (or was it in the last thread) under which cicrumstances the EPL gets a fifth starter, as I knew that was possible. Chelsea winning the CL outside top four would be a five EPL starter scenario.
