Football: Red Card for the Roman Empire

Tonight' El Clasico actually looks promising. Madrid is the better team but Barca have looked so much improved in the last weeks, especially on the counter.

Meanwhile in Ligue 1, Pochettino looks like he's just waiting to get the sack (and the fee). Tuchel did the same before him and succeeded, so... I guess Poch is definitely becoming available for United in or before the summer :bang:

Haaland has improved on this aspect of his game quite a bit. He really isn't Lukaku at Chelsea like object that's just there to waiting to get fed to score a goal. He is capable of dropping deeper to get and distribute the ball, when needed. Whoever (City) signs him, will get a pretty complete forward, with very few (if any) weaknesses.

Sure, but for what I've seen (which isn't much), Haaland takes one or two touches and runs. If anything comes of it after, it's in the "usual" way. Still, something a 9 needs in their wheelhouse.

I saw this image earlier today which (while a couple months old now, probably hasn't changed wildly in overall positioning since then, except for Nkunku possibly having shuffled quite strongly to the right) suggests that Haaland is a better link-upper than generally thought of, even if he'll never be a false 9. Yeah, he does need to be fed, but he brings players into it plenty too.

Real without Benzema are as bad as Barca without Messi. And I'm not even sure Haaland/Mbappe would fix it, they're used to being fed. ETA: Not that either would hurt, mind.

Benzema is a key player obviously but the bigger problem is Ancelotti. More specifically his reluctance to properly rotate the midfield - he's run Casemiro, Kroos and Modric into the ground. We saw this most recently against PSG where they got overrun by a pretty average midfield in the first leg and the first half of the second leg. If there is any truth to his stint at Bayern then his training methods leave a lot to be desired too - he's more a glorified cheerleader now than a football coach. Real are still going to win La Liga most likely but not because they've been that good; rather their main rivals have been even more shit than Real have. Perez needs to be on the lookout for a better manager than a past it Ancelotti.

Ancelotti always relied on a lot of talent to succeed. He's exposed whenever needs to up the squad's level.

He didn't want to sign Roberto Baggio in the 90's for Parma because didn't want to accommodate him in his system . Enough said.

Another one who didn't rate Baggio was Marcelo Lippi the overrated fraud, who asked of him to spy on the rest of the squad in Inter (which Baggio refused) and eventually shamefully banished him from the club.

One that got away...

Goals rain in for Tammy Abraham as derby win keeps sun shining at Roma

Quote

The way Tammy Abraham tells it, his decision to join Roma came down to a desire to enjoy a little more vitamin D. He has recounted many times the story of how José Mourinho opened his sales pitch last summer with a simple question: “Do you want to enjoy some sun or stay in the rain?”

Yet the real question was a more profound one: was Abraham ready to give up the familiarity and comfort of England for a chance to make his name somewhere different. He had scored goals at Chelsea – 30 in all competitions across the preceding two seasons – yet seen his opportunities reduced by a manager, Thomas Tuchel, who confessed to not trusting him.

Pretty sure if he were to have his time again, Tuchel wouldn't let him go. A lot has been said about the quality of the Chelsea manager, but this was a fuck up of the highest order.

The Lukaku/Abraham switch should get plenty of attention, and will probably only look worse over time.  Perhaps Chelsea will make better decisions with Gilmour, Gallagher and Broja as they return.

Liverpool got a good result yesterday with a heavily rotated team, even if the performance was ropey.  Progressing to the SF while resting a lot of legs is what matters.  Of the outfield ten, only VVD and Fabinho have been first choice starters over the past couple of months, so not surprising that it was all a bit disjointed.  And neither Henderson nor Milner was present to act as Klopp’s vocal relay.  Konate, Tsimikas and Gomez all did pretty well as they came in, which is really valuable to know they can be called upon.  Konate has done really well as a young, newly arriving CB — only Matip’s best season for Liverpool is keeping him out of the team.  Elliott was a bit anonymous again, Ox worked hard but his final ball still isn’t great (and some bad attitude as he was subbed), Firmino had some good link-up play but his final ball in attacks was complacent too many times, and Jota continues to look very rusty in general play again, despite scoring the winner again.  Possibly Elliott and Jota will actually benefit from playing in the international break.

It looked like we changed formation after halftime to try to suit the players better, but it actually made things worse.  And then we stuck with that alternate formation even after bringing on the four subs.  In the first half we were pretty in control but didn’t take our chances, while the second half saw us lose control but eventually take one of those chances.

Well done to Forest.  They had one very good chance at 0-0.  Not an easy away game there, and they had already beaten Leicester and Arsenal. I’m glad we could win the tie while resting the players who have been playing two matches every week recently.

Liverpool are grinding out the wins but we aren’t showing the usual ramp up in quality for the run-in.  That’s a concern.  We need to figure out how to go back up a couple of gears before we face City in the PL and Cup, and possibly face Bayern in the CL.
